bracket does not touch the ATF cooler.

Tighten the -nuts- to 8 Nm.

– Position the selector housing on the selector lever cable.
– Install the selector lever cable into the selector mechanism.

– Insert the selector lever cable into the bracket and then insert

the bolt through the eye from the top in the direction of

-arrow 2-.

Install the locking plate only after having checked the selector

lever cable for ease of movement. Refer to

⇒ “4.4 Selector Lever Cable, Checking”, page 37

 .

– Secure the selector lever cable with a new securing plate to

the cable bracket on the selector mechanism.

attach with the lock washers -2 and 3-.

– Attach the underbody trim panel to the body -arrows-.
– Install the exhaust system and align it without tension. Refer

Mufflers; Exhaust System, Installing without Tension .

– Install the tunnel braces under the exhaust system. Refer to

⇒  Body Exterior; Rep. Gr.  50 ; Tunnel Brace .

– Adjust the selector lever cable after installing. Refer to

⇒ “4.5 Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting”, page 38

 .

Selector Lever Cable, Checking

Brief Description
To check the selector lever cable for ease of movement, remove

it from the transmission and position the removed end so it does

not make contact anywhere.
Then selector lever is moved and the selector lever cable installed

again on the transmission.
After that, the selector lever cable must be adjusted. Refer to

⇒ “4.5 Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting”, page 38

 .

Do not grease the selector lever cable connection!
Checking
– Move the selector lever into »P«.
– Loosen the bolt -2- on the selector lever cable -1-.

using an open end wrench -2-.

– Squeeze the retainers and remove the selector lever cable

from the cable bracket -arrows-.

– Move the selector lever from »P« to »S« and back to »P« sev‐

eral times.

• The selector lever must have ease of movement.
– Reinstall the selector level cable with the »loosened« adjust‐

ing screw.

– Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to

⇒ “4.5 Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting”, page 38

 .

Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting

Special tools and workshop equipment required
♦ Torque Wrench 1331 5-50Nm - VAG1331-
• Selector mechanism and selector lever cable move easily

when shifting.

• Selector lever cable boot is undamaged.
Selector Lever Cable Must Always Be Adjusted If:
♦ The selector lever cable was removed from the transmission.
♦ The engine and/or transmission were removed and installed.
♦ Sections of the subframe mount were removed and installed.
♦ The selector lever cable itself or the selector mechanism was

removed and installed.

♦ The engine/transmission position was changed, for example,

were installed without tension.

Adjusting
– Move the selector lever into “P” position.
• The adjusting screw -2- must be »loosened«.
– Move the lever/selector shaft -3- into “P” (push the lever to the

rear).

WARNING

Make sure the parking lock is latched.

– From »underneath the vehicle«, rotate both front wheels in the

same direction and at the same time until the parking lock au‐

dibly engages.

• The parking lock is engaged when it is not possible to rotate

both front wheels in the same direction at the same time.

– Tap the handle on the selector lever back and forth gently but

do not move it out of “P” under any circumstances.

This places the selector lever cable core in its optimal position.
