“E” Sign Types
Electronic Signs
Signs for the Amtrak Graphics Signage System have
been categorized into five groups.
“A” Sign Types represent Platform Signs
“B” Sign Types represent Interior Signs
“C” Sign Types represent Exterior Signs
“D” Sign Types represent Regulatory Signs
“E” Sign Types represent Electronic Signs
This chapter includes a graphic review of Electronic
Signage within the Amtrak Graphics Signage System.
Amtrak has updated most of its electronic Sign Types
and is directing a national implementation of these
new units. Since this is a nationally coordinated effort,
the PIDS (Passenger Information Display Systems) Sign
Types E2 through E9 cannot be ordered for individual
stations. Contact SignageBrandManagement@Amtrak.
com for information on PIDS.
Electronic sign systems require individual configura-
tions. A sign overview, elevations of typical mount-
ing options, sign size and layout and a design intent
drawing is included for each electronic Sign Type.
General specifications given in this chapter are based
on available technology as of date of publication of
this Manual and they are subject to change. Sign types
are listed first by their name and are followed by their
identifying letter and number. For example: Visual
Messaging System, E3 Sign Type.

E2 Sign Type
Sign Overview
E2 Sign Types utilize
LED electronic display
technology to provide
next train information
on platforms at stations
with light to heavy pas-
senger loads. Next train
information shall include
train name and number,
train destination and
E2 Sign Type
departure time. When
no trains are expected,
information shall default
to current date and time.
Each display is operated
by Amtrak personnel
from a central controller
located in the communi-
cation center.
For maximum visibility
and efficiency, the num-
ber and placement of E2
Sign Types is determined
by careful consideration
of specific station needs,
including existing static
sign locations and view-
ing distances.

Visual Messaging
System
E3 Sign Type
Sign Overview
The ability to visually
display station announce-
ments concurrently with
equivalent public address
announcements is man-
dated by the ADA so that
all passengers may have
access to the same infor-
mation.
E3 Sign Type
Amtrak Visual Messaging
Systems are located on
platforms at stations
with light to heavy pas-
senger loads and utilize
LED electronic display
technology. These signs
are used to communicate
public announcements
and emergency mes-
sages on platforms in the
absence of other acces-
sible visual displays.
The E3 Sign Type is distin-
guished from the E2 Sign
Type by the E3’s static
“Messaging” header and
the E3’s dynamic infor-
mation content, which is
dedicated solely to pub-
lic announcements and
emergency messages.
For maximum visibility
and efficiency, the num-
ber and placement of
Visual Messaging Systems
is determined by careful
consideration of specific
station needs, including
existing static sign loca-
tions and viewing dis-
tances.
