and take off to rear arrow -B-.

Unclip cover cap -2- from outer seat rail and remove bolt -3-. Unclip rear of cover strip -4- arrow -C- and 
take off to rear arrow -D-.

Unclip rear of cover strip -1- from inner seat rail arrow -A- and pull off arrow -B-.

Unclip rear of cover strip -5- from outer seat rail arrow -C- and pull off arrow -D-.

Slide seat to rear.

Remove bolts -6- (23 N.m) or nuts -7- (23 N.m).  

z

Slide seat to rear out of guide rails.

Disconnect side airbag connection -1- from coupling station -2-.

Disconnect seat heater connection -3- from coupling station, if part of original equipment.  

z

Install connector -4-(airbag adapter VAS 5094) into connector housing -5-.  

NOTE:

Technician must be electrostatically discharged before disconnecting the 
igniter and ground wiring (by briefly touching door lock striker or vehicle body).

Installing 

Install in reverse order of removal. 

See appropriate airbag article in RESTRAINTS. 

FRONT SEAT BACKREST, ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW 

1. Seat trim, right  

2. Bolt for trim, right  

3. Cover cap, right  

4. Seat  

5. Backrest  

6. Cover cap, left  

7. Adjusting knob (backrest)  

8. Cover cap

Qty. 2  

9. Bolt/screw

Qty. 2  

10. Adjustment lever (seat height)  

11. Seat trim, left  

12. Bolt for trim, left  

NOTE:

z

After reconnecting battery, ensure the vehicle equipment (radio, clock, 
electric windows) is checked as per Workshop manual and/or Owner's 
manual. See BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND RECONNECTING .  

z

If the Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K75- signals a malfunction 
after installation is complete, then the DTC memory must be erased and 
interrogated again with V.A.G 1551.

FRONT SEAT BACKREST, REMOVING AND INSTALLING 

Removing 

z

Remove seat, see FRONT SEATS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .  

z

Pull off adjustment knob -7-. See Fig. 7 .

Unclip cover caps - 8 - (Qty. 2) and remove bolts - 9 - (Qty. 2) and remove adjustment lever - 10 -.  

z

Remove bolt - 2 - and pull off trim -1-. 

NOTE:

The removal and installation procedures may have to be modified slightly 
depending on equipment variants.
