BASIC SETTING, INITIATING 

Basic setting must be performed after the following repairs:  

z

Replacing engine control module  

z

Replacing throttle valve control module  

z

Replacing transmission control module  

z

Replacing throttle position (accelerator pedal position) sensor  

Connect VAS 5051 tester and select functions. See VAS 5051 DIAGNOSIS, TESTING AND 
INFORMATION SYSTEM, CONNECTING AND SELECTING FUNCTION . 

The Following Description Refers To V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool 

Indicated on display:

Press keys 0, 0 and 1. 

Confirm entry with Q key.

The system is now in basic setting. 

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) MEMORY, ERASING 

Connect VAS 5051 tester and select functions. See VAS 5051 DIAGNOSIS, TESTING AND 
INFORMATION SYSTEM, CONNECTING AND SELECTING FUNCTION . 

Requirement 

DTC memory is checked. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) MEMORY, CHECKING . 

After DTC Memory Has Been Successfully Checked 

Indicated on display:  

z

Rapid data transfer HELP  

z

Select function XX  

Press keys 0 and 5 (05 selects function "Erase DTC memory").

NOTE:

Accelerator pedal must remain at idling speed position.

NOTE:

The following description refers To V.A.G 1551.

05 Erase DTC memory  

Confirm entry with Q key. 

Adherence to the sequence of operations was not maintained if the following is indicated on display:  

z

Warning!  

z

DTC memory was not checked  

At first the DTC memory must be checked (read). 

DTC memory will be erased approx. 5 seconds after the following display appears.  

z

Rapid data transfer "right arrow"  

z

DTC memory is erased! 

The DTC memory is now erased. Wait about 1 minute before again checking DTC memory. 

Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217- was not given sufficient time to recognize DTCs if the following 
display appears: "System cannot be checked", print out with printer switched on:  

z

1 DTC recognized!  

z

00811 3333  

z

System cannot be checked  

Wait about 1 minute before again checking DTC memory. 

After checking and erasing DTC memory, perform a test drive and again check DTC memory. 

When checking the DTC memory the display must contain this message:  

z

No DTCs recognized  

TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE (TCM) -J217-, CODING 

There is no special code required for the New Beetle convertible. 

MEASURED VALUE BLOCK, READING 

NOTE:

If the ignition was switched off (e.g. between interrogating the fault memory and 
erasing fault memory), the fault memory is then not erased.
