Volkswagen - Air Bag Restraint Systems

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), also known as air bag system, is designed to provide increased
accident protection for driver and passengers by deploying front air bags and seat belt pretensioners in a front-
end collision and side air bags in a lateral collision.

Main components of air bag system include air bag control module (mounted on tunnel under center console),
driver-side air bag module, passenger-side air bag module, side air bag modules, side air bag impact (crash)
sensors, seat belt pretensioners, data link connector, AIR BAG warning light and spiral spring (clockspring).
See Fig. 1 .

COMPONENT LOCATIONS

Refer to illustration for restraint system component locations. See Fig. 1

WARNING:

Accidental air bag deployment is possible. Personal injury may result.
Read and follow all WARNINGS and AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

SERVICING

Manufacturer recommends air bag system inspection be performed as part of every annual lubrication and
maintenance service. Air bag system inspection consists of visual inspection only. No parts are routinely
replaced.

SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK

Turn ignition switch to ON position. AIR BAG warning light should come on for about 4 seconds and then go
out. If light comes on and remains on, air bag control module has detected a system fault. See

AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Observe these precautions when working with air bag systems:

z

Obtain radio anti-theft code (if equipped) before disconnecting battery.

z

Disable air bag system before servicing any air bag system or steering column component. See
DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .

z

DO NOT attempt repair of any air bag system component.

z

DO NOT leave air bag parts unattended. They should be installed in vehicle immediately after obtaining
them.

z

DO NOT use air bag components which have been dropped onto hard surface from at least 20" (0.5 m) or
show signs of damage.

z

DO NOT allow chemical cleaners, oil or grease to contact vinyl covering on air bag module.

z

DO NOT place stickers or covers on steering wheel.

z

Always disable air bag system before performing electric welding on vehicle.

z

Use only Scan Tool (VAG 1551) to test air bag system. Never use test light on air bag system.

z

DO NOT expose air bag modules to temperatures greater than 212°F (100°C).

z

Use only original equipment seat covers and clips that are designed for use with side air bags (identified
by label on fabric). Ensure cover seam is straight in area of side air bag. DO NOT use aftermarket seat
covers.

z

Technicians must electrostatically discharge themselves before picking up or touching air bag unit.

DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM

To disable air bag system, disconnect negative battery cable. No waiting time is necessary. To activate system,
ensure no one is inside vehicle. Reconnect negative battery cable. Perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK

DISPOSAL PROCEDURES
