An undeployed air bag or seat belt pretensioner must be deployed before disposal. See SCRAPPED 
VEHICLE 
.  

UNDEPLOYED AIR BAGS OR SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER (FAULTY UNIT) 

If undeployed air bag or seat belt pretensioner has been diagnosed as faulty, remove faulty component and 
return intact to manufacturer for proper disposal. Air bag must be packaged and shipped according to U.S. 
Department of Transportation procedures.  

SCRAPPED VEHICLE 

DO NOT deploy air bag(s) in vehicle. Remove air bag from vehicle. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION .  

Using Deployment Device (J-44210), along with accompanying Air Bag & Pyrotechnic Deployment Device 
Instruction Booklet, deploy air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners (pyrotechnic devices). Dispose of deployed 
air bag modules or seat belt pretensioners as you would any other part.  

POST-COLLISION INSPECTION 

When a vehicle has been involved in a collision, certain components of the passive restraint system must be 
inspected or replaced. See AIR BAG/SRS COMPONENT INSPECTION & REPLACEMENT TABLES 
article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section.  

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 

AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE 

Removal & Installation 

1. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Unclip center 

armrest side trim, remove bolt and center armrest. See Fig. 2 . Remove rear ashtray/or cup holder by 
turning counter-clockwise and up. Slide complete front cup holder/ashtray assembly to right to remove.  

2. Pull parking brake lever up and using screwdriver, remove trim from around parking brake lever. Slide 

gearshift lever boot upward and loosen clamp underneath. Remove gearshift lever knob with boot.  

3. Remove console cover mounting screws. Remove console cover and disconnect cigarette lighter 

connector. Remove center console insert. Pry off console mounting screw covers and remove console 
screws. Raise center console at rear and pull back over gearshift lever.  

4. Remove screws and clip on trim under instrument panel. Pull rearward, disconnect connector and remove. 

Press locking tab and swing connector locking bar to unlock position. See Fig. 3 . Disconnect harness 
connector. Remove module mounting nuts and remove air bag control module from mounting studs.  

5. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten air bag control module mounting nuts and center armrest 

WARNING:

Accidental air bag deployment is possible. Personal injury may result. 
Read AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS before working on air bag system 
or related component.

bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Activate air bag system. Replacement air bag 
control modules must be coded. See CODING AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE under 
DIAGNOSTICS. Perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .

DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE 

Removal & Installation 

1. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Release steering 

column adjustment. Turn steering wheel so steering wheel spokes are vertical. Lock steering column in 
fully extended and lowered position. Remove instrument cluster, if necessary. See INSTRUMENT 
CLUSTER 
.  

2. Raise steering wheel to highest position. Insert 7" (175 mm) screwdriver 1.75" (45 mm) into hole on back 

of steering wheel and twist clockwise, pressing clip back and releasing air bag locking lug. See Fig. 4 .  

3. Turn steering wheel 180 degrees and repeat last step to release locking lug on other side. Center steering 

wheel. Tilt air bag module forward. Disconnect harness and remove air bag module.  

4. To install, reverse removal procedure. Activate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING 

AIR BAG SYSTEM . Perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK
