Volkswagen New Beetle. Manual - part 1876

1. Check wiring between ABS control module and ECM for open or short. See appropriate WIRING

DIAGRAM under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. If wiring is okay, go
to next step. If wiring is not okay, repair as necessary. After repairs, erase DTC memory. Verify repair.
Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE .

2. Check ABS system. See appropriate ABS article.

DTC P0321/16705 & DTC P0322/16706

Code Definition

z

DTC P0321/16705: Engine Speed Sensor (RPM - G28), Implausible Signal

z

DTC P0322/16706: Engine Speed Sensor (RPM - G28), No Signal

Test Requirement

Ensure all fuses are okay, battery voltage is at least 11.5 volts and fuel pump relay is okay. Ensure all electrical
accessories are off and A/C is off. Ensure engine is mechanically sound. Ensure no intake or exhaust system
leaks exist. Ensure engine coolant temperature is at least 176°F (80°C).

Test Procedure - Beetle, GTI & Jetta

1. Disconnect grey 3-pin harness connector from Engine Speed Sensor (G28). For all engine codes except

AWW and AWP. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . For engine codes AWW and AWP, see Fig. 42 .
Using DVOM measure resistance between terminals No. 2 and 3 of Engine Speed sensor. See Fig. 43 .
Resistance should be 730-1000 ohms. Check for short circuit between Engine Speed sensor terminals No.
1 and 2. Check for short circuit between Engine Speed sensor terminals No. 1 and 3. If readings are okay,
go to next step. If readings are not okay, replace faulty Engine Speed sensor. Erase DTC memory. Verify
repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN
PROCEDURE
.

2. Disconnect ECM harness connector, leave ECM disconnected from test box. Connect Test Box (VAG

1598/31) to ECM harness connector. See CONNECTING VAG TEST BOX . Using DVOM, check
resistance between the following Engine Speed sensor 3-pin harness connector terminals and test box
sockets. See Fig. 44 .

z

Engine Speed sensor 3-pin harness connector terminal No. 1 and test box socket No. 108.

z

Engine Speed sensor 3-pin harness connector terminal No. 2 and test box socket No. 90.

z

Engine Speed sensor 3-pin harness connector terminal No. 3 and test box socket No. 82.

NOTE:

If a test ends with ECM replacement. Before replacing ECM be certain that, all
wiring, power and ground supplies are okay. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in
SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL and ECM GROUND &
VOLTAGE SUPPLY .

NOTE:

Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor (G28) is a speed and reference sensor. If Engine
Speed sensor does not send a signal, engine will not start. If Engine Speed
sensor fails when engine is running, engine will stall.

Resistance should be a maximum of 1.5 ohms for each reading. Check wiring in Engine Speed sensor 3-
pin harness connector for short circuits to one another. If resistance is okay and no short circuits are
present, go to next step. If resistance is not okay or short circuit exists, repair as necessary. Erase DTC
memory. Verify repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE
RELEARN PROCEDURE
.

3.

Remove Engine Speed sensor. Ensure Engine Speed sensor wheel is secure on sensor shaft. Check
Engine Speed sensor for excessive runout and damage. Repair or replace as necessary. Erase DTC
memory. Verify repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE
RELEARN PROCEDURE
. If Engine Speed sensor harness connector circuits are okay, and Engine
Speed sensor is okay, replace ECM. See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE REMOVAL &
INSTALLATION
. Erase DTC memory. Verify repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn
procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE .

1. Verify battery voltage is a minimum of 11.5 volts and all fuses are okay. Repair as necessary. Go to next

step.

2. Disconnect grey 3-pin harness connector from Engine Speed sensor. See Fig. 45 . Using DVOM measure

resistance between terminals No. 2 and 3 of Engine Speed sensor. See Fig. 43 . Resistance should be 400-
1000 ohms. Check for short circuit between Engine Speed sensor terminals No. 1 and 2. Check for short
circuit between Engine Speed sensor terminals No. 1 and 3. If readings are okay, go to step 3 . If readings
are not okay, replace faulty Engine Speed sensor. Erase DTC memory. Verify repair. Test is complete.
Perform ECM relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE .

3. Disconnect ECM harness connector, leave ECM disconnected from test box. Connect Test Box (VAG

1598/31) to ECM harness connector. See CONNECTING VAG TEST BOX . Using DVOM, check
resistance between the following Engine Speed sensor 3-pin harness connector terminals and test box
sockets. See Fig. 44 .
