Volkswagen New Beetle. Manual - part 1783

DTC P0216/16600
Cold Start Injector (N108) - Open Circuit/Short To Ground

DTC P1251/17659
Cold Start Injector (N108) - Short To B+

DTC P1252/17660
Cold Start Injector (N108) - Open Circuit/Short To Ground

Possible Effects

Possible effects are engine knocks during idle and/or poor engine performance.

Test Procedures

1. Let engine idle. Activate Cold Start Injector (N108) using Output Diagnostic Test Mode. See OUTPUT

DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE . Activation should make a change in combustion that can be heard. If no
change in combustion noise is heard, go to next step. If change in combustion noise is heard, go to step 3 .

2. Check injection timing control range. See DTC P1248/17656: COLD START INJECTOR -

CONTROL DIFFERENCE. . Repair as necessary. After repairs, erase DTC memory. See CLEARING
DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (FUNCTION 05)
under SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Verify
repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN
PROCEDURE
.

3. Erase DTC memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (FUNCTION 05) under

SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN
PROCEDURE
. Test is complete if no DTCs reset.

DTC P0225/16609, DTC P0226/16610, DTC P0228/16612, DTC P1631/18039, DTC P1632/18040, DTC
P1639/18047 & DTC P3002/19458

NOTE:

For connector terminal wire colors, see appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under
ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. For component
locations, see COMPONENT LOCATIONS .

NOTE:

Before replacing any component, ensure all connectors at component and ECM
are clean and tight. After making any repairs, disconnect ECM harness
connector for 10 seconds, connect ECM harness connector and retest system.
It is necessary to generate an ECM readiness code if ECM memory is cleared,
battery voltage is disconnected or ECM is disconnected.

CAUTION: Conditions that cause DTC P1251/17659 and P1252/17660 to set may

cause fuel injection timing to be advanced continuously, this causes
engine knock at idle and poor performance. In this condition, Output
Diagnostic Test Mode may not affect engine knock or performance,
(Output Diagnostic Test Mode advances fuel injection timing).

DTC P1632/18040
Throttle Position Sensor (G79) - Supply Voltage Too High/Too Low Or Open Circuit

DTC P1639/18047
Throttle Position Sensor (G79) - Implausible Signal

DTC P3002/19458
Kick Down Switch (F8) - Implausible Signal

Possible Effects

Possible effects are glow plug indicator light blinks and/or increased idle speed.

Test Procedures

NOTE:

Throttle Position Sensor (G79) is located by accelerator pedal.

NOTE:

Terminal No. 1 at throttle position sensor is only used on vehicles equipped
with A/T. On vehicles with A/T, kick down switch must be felt before accelerator
pedal is fully depressed. Kickdown switch is an integral part of Throttle Position
Sensor (G79); there is no adjustment.

1. Connect scan tool. See Fig. 1 . Turn ignition on. Press keys "0" and "1" for address word "Engine

Electronics", press keys "0" and "8" for "Read measuring value block" and enter by pressing "Q" key.
Press keys "0", "0" and "2" for display group "2" and enter by pressing "Q" key.

2. Scan tool display should read "Read measuring value block 2". Do not depress accelerator pedal, check

throttle position in "display field 2" should be 0 %. At same time check Closed Throttle Position switch in
"display field 3", "display field 3" should read "0" "1" "0". Observe "display fields 2 and 3", while slowly
depressing accelerator pedal to wide open throttle. At wide open throttle "display field 2" should read
100% and "display field 3" should read "0" "0" "0". Press "right arrow key", press "0" and "6" for "end
output" and enter by pressing "Q" key.

3. Turn ignition off. If display field readings did not change or changes where inconsistent, go to next step.

If display field readings where consistent but display field specifications could not be obtained, replace
faulty Throttle Position Sensor (G79). After repairs, erase DTC memory. See CLEARING
DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (FUNCTION 05)
under SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Verify
repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN
PROCEDURE
.

4. Disconnect Engine Control Module (ECM) harness connectors. ECM is located in left rear corner of

engine compartment, in electronics box. Connect VAG 1598/31 test box to ECM harness connector,
CONNECTING VAG TEST BOX (leave ECM disconnected).

5.

Check for open between harness connector terminals and tests box sockets. See CHECKING
THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR (G79) CIRCUITS
. Also check for short to one and other. Check
harness connector terminals for short to B+ and for short to ground. See CHECKING THROTTLE
POSITION SENSOR (G79) CIRCUITS
table. See Fig. 28 .

6. If wiring is okay, go to next step. If wiring is not okay, repair as necessary. After repairs, erase DTC

memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (FUNCTION 05) under SELF
DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Verify repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See TEST
DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE

CHECKING THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR (G79) CIRCUITS

7. Replace faulty Throttle Position Sensor (G79). After repairs, erase DTC memory. See CLEARING

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (FUNCTION 05) under SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Verify
repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN
