MODULE (ECM) - J220-, REPLACING . 

Driving range signal, checking 

Vehicles with automatic transmission only 

Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- receives the following information from transmission control 
module: 

z

Driving range selected (selector lever in 1/2/3/R/D) or  

z

No driving range selected (selector lever in P or N)  

Special tools, test equipment and auxiliary items 

z

VAG 1551 scan tool (or VAG 1552 mobile scan tool) with VAG 1551/3B cable  

z

VAG 1598/31 test box  

z

VAG 1526 A or Fluke 83 multimeter  

z

VAG 1594 adapter set  

z

Electrical Wiring Diagram  

Test conditions 

z

Selector lever of the automatic transmission must be in "P" or "N" position  

z

Air conditioning must be turned off  

z

All electrical accessories, e.g. lights and rear window defroster must be switched off  

Test sequence 

z

Connect VAG 1551 scan tool (or VAG 1552). Switch ignition on and select Motronic Engine Control 
Module (ECM) -J220- with "Address word" 01. Connecting scan tool and selecting Motronic Engine 
Control Module (ECM) -J220-, see VAG 1551, CONNECTING AND SELECTING MOTRONIC 
ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) -J220- .

Press buttons -0-, -5- and -1- for "Display group number 51" and confirm entry with -Q- button.

Check specifications in display zone 3: 

DISPLAY GROUP 51: DRIVING RANGE SIGNAL 

If the specifications are obtained: 

z

Press --> button.  

z

Press buttons -0- and -6- for "End output" function and confirm input with -Q- button.  

z

Switch off ignition.
