„ NOTE: The thermostat is of the lock-open type. If
the thermostat is ever allowed to fully open, it will
remain open and replacement will be necessary.

Checking Compression 

(660 cc)

1. Remove the four 6 mm cap screws securing the

coil cover to the valve cover.

2. Remove the three 6 mm cap screws that secure

the ignition coils to the valve cover. Remove the

ignition coils noting that the coil with the green

tubing is coil #1.

3.  Using a 3/8 in. drive ratchet, adapter, and 5/8 in.

spark plug socket, carefully remove the three

spark plugs.

„ NOTE: Before this test procedure, make certain
the battery is fully charged.

4. Install the compression tester gauge with

adapter into the spark plug hole; then with the

throttle valve in the full-open position, crank the

engine over to get the psi  reading. Compression

should be 175 psi ± 10% at sea level.

„ NOTE: Make certain that all three cylinder read-
ings are within 10% of each other.

5. Install the spark plugs and tighten to 1.8 kg-m

(13 ft-lb).

6.  Install the ignition coils onto the valve cover and

tighten the three 6 mm caps screws to 1.3 kg-m

(9.5 ft-lb).

7. Install the coil cover onto the valve cover and

secure with the four 6 mm cap screws. Tighten

only until snug.

Removing/Installing 

Spark Plugs 

(660 cc)

1. Remove the four 6 mm cap screws securing the

coil cover to the valve cover.

2. Remove the three 6 mm cap screws that secure

the ignition coils to the valve cover; then

remove the ignition coils noting the coil with the

green tubing is for the #1 cylinder.

3. Using a 3/8 in. drive ratchet, adapter, and a 5/8

in. spark plug socket, carefully remove the three

spark plugs.

„ NOTE: Prior to installing the new spark plugs,
check the gap between the electrode and the
ground strap. The clearance should be 0.7-0.8 mm
(0.028-0.031 in.).

4. Apply a small amount of Anti-Seize Thread

Compound (p/n 0678-146) to each spark plug

and install the spark plugs. Tighten to 1.8 kg-m

(13 ft-lb).

5.  Install the ignition coils onto the valve cover and

tighten the three 6 mm cap screws to 1.3 kg-m

(9.5 ft-lb).

6. Install the coil cover onto the valve cover and

secure with the four 6 mm cap screws. Tighten

only until snug.

Servicing Valves 

(660 cc)

If valves, valve guides, or valve seats require servic-

ing or replacement, Arctic Cat recommends that the

components be taken to a qualified machine shop

for servicing.

„ NOTE: It is advisable to inspect/adjust the valves
after the first 7000 miles of operation and every
7000 miles thereafter.

INSPECTING/ADJUSTING VALVES

1. Remove the two cap screws securing the coolant

tube to the valve cover.

2. Remove the three cap screws securing the intake

plenum brace to the intake manifold.

! CAUTION

If any valve is discolored or pitted or if the seating
surface is worn, the valve must be replaced. Do not
attempt to grind a valve or severe engine damage
may occur.

! CAUTION

Disconnect the battery ground cable before starting
this procedure.

3. Remove the breather tube from the engine

cover.

4. Remove the spark plugs (see Removing/Install-

ing Spark Plugs (660 cc) in this section).

5. Remove the five 6 mm cap screws (short) and

the one 6 mm cap screw (long) that secure the

engine cover to the cylinder head.

6. Remove the engine cover from the cylinder

head.

„ NOTE: Be careful so the inner spark plug hole
gaskets do not fall into the engine.

7. Remove the air silencer (see appropriate Servic-

ing Air Silencer in this section).

8. Carefully remove the water pump/alternator belt

cover; then account for the two cap screws and

one nut and washer.
