READING
Time: 45 minutes
(40 scores)
Task 1
For items 1-10, read the passage below and choose option A, B, C or D which best
fits according to the text.
Duncan Phyfe
Duncan Phyfe made some of the most beautiful furniture found in America.
His family name was originally Fife, and he was born in Scotland in 1768. In 1784,
the Fife family immigrated to Albany, New York where Duncan’s father opened a
cabinet making shop. Duncan followed in his father’s footsteps and was apprenticed
to a cabinetmaker. After completing his training, Duncan moved to New York City.
Duncan Fife was first mentioned in the 1792 NYC Directory as a furniture
“joiner” in business at 2 Broad Street. Two years later, he moved, expanded his
business, and changed his name to Phyfe. He was a quiet-living, God-fearing young
man who felt his new name would probably appeal to potential customers who were
definitely anti-British in this post-Revolutionary War period. Duncan Phyfe’s name
distinguished him from his contemporaries. Although the new spelling helped him
better compete with French émigré craftsmen, his new name had more to do with
hanging it on a sign over his door stoop.
The artisans and merchants who came to America discovered a unique kind of
freedom. They were no longer restricted by class and guild traditions of Europe. For
the first time in history, a man learned that by working hard, he could build his
business based on his own name and reputation and quality of work. Phyfe’s
workshop apparently took off immediately. At the peak of his success, Phyfe
employed 100 craftsmen. Some economic historians point to Phyfe as having
employed division of labor and an assembly line. What his workshop produced shows
Phyfe’s absolute dedication to quality in workmanship. Each piece of furniture was
made of the best available materials. He was reported to have paid $1,000 for a single
Santo Domingo mahogany log.
Phyfe did not create new designs. Rather, he borrowed from a broad range of
the period’s classical styles, Empire, Sheraton, Regency, and French Classical among
them. Nevertheless, Phyfe’s high quality craftsmanship established him as America’s

patriotic interpreter of European design in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth
centuries. Although the number of pieces produced by Duncan Phyfe’s workshop is
enormous, comparatively few marked or labeled pieces have been found extant. In
antiques shops and auctions, collectors have paid $11,000 for a card table, $24,200
for a tea table, and $93,500 for a sewing table.

Task 2
For items 11-20, read the passage below and choose which of the sentences A-K fit
into the numbered gaps in the text. There is one extra sentence which does not fit in
any of the gaps. Write the correct letter in boxes 11-20 on your answer sheet.
Ever since the 1910s, when film-makers first set up shops in Hollywood,
mapmakers have been making quite unusual and even unique things: maps showing
the locations of the fabulous homes of the stars. Collectively, they form an
unofficial version of the Oscars, showing who’s in and who’s out in the film world.
'Each one looks different,’ says Linda Welton, whose grandfather and mother
pioneered these maps. 11 ________. Former film stars vanish from them, new ones
appear on them, and some of the truly greats are permanent fixtures on them.
In 1933, noticing the steady stream of tourists going westward to follow the
stars from Hollywood to Beverly Hills (the nearby district where most of the stars
went to live), Linda's grandfather, Wesley Lake, got a copyright for his Guide to
Starland: Estates and Mansions.
12 ________. For
40 years Linda's mother,
Vivienne, sold maps just down the road from Cary Cooper’s place at 200, Baroda*.
The asterisk indicates that it was the actor’s final home, as opposed to a plus sign
(denoting an ex-home) or a zero (for no view from the street).
‘My grandfather asked Mom to talk to the gardeners to find out where the
stars lived,’ Linda recalls. ‘She would come up to them and say: “ 13 ________
Who would suspect a little girl?’ Linda Welton and her team now sell about 10,000
maps a year from a folding chair parked curbside six days a week. 14 ________.
The evolution of the maps mirrors both the Hollywood publicity machine and
real estate and tourism development.
15 ________. The first celebrity home
belonged to the artist Paul de Longpre. 16 ________.
Although it is not known for certain who published the first map, by the
mid-1920s all sorts of people were producing them. 17 ________.
One of the most famous of the early maps was produced to show the location
of Pickfair, the home of the newly married stars Mary Pickford and Douglas
Fairbanks, and the homes of some of their star friends. During World War I, they
opened their home to serve refreshments to soldiers. As Vivienne Welton once
explained in an interview, to a map and cartography magazine, ‘She asked a few
friends to do the same. 18 ________.’

For over 40 years, people have marched toward the corner of Sunset and
Baroda with hand-painted yellow signs saying: ‘Star Maps, 2 blocks’, ‘Star Maps, 1
block’, ‘Star Maps here’. The maps reflect the shifting geography of stardom as
celebrities, looking for escape from over-enthusiastic fans, some with quite
unhealthy intentions, have moved out to various districts in Malibu. 19 ________.
Legendary stars - Garbo, Monroe, Chaplin - remain on them. 20 ________.
A. As they do so, they give advice to the tourists on star safaris through the lime
green landscape of Beverly Hills.
B. Studios like Paramount published the names and addresses of its stars on
theirs, and businesses distributed them as a promotional gimmick.
C. Others, however, say that the star maps are still an essential part of
Hollywood and the film world.
D. More profoundly, perhaps, the maps suggest the temporary nature of fame.
E. Early film stars like Lillian Gish lived in modest, somewhat grubby rooming
houses, taking street cars to and from the studio.
F. Updated regularly, they are still for sale at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and
Baroda Drive.
G. And so a map was needed.
H. It is the oldest continuously published star map and one of a half-dozen or so
maps of varying degrees of accuracy and spelling correctness sold today.
I. Oh, this is a beautiful garden, but who lives here?
J. Others, however, hang on for about a decade and then vanish.
K. He had a luxuriously-landscaped house at Cahuenga Avenue and Hollywood
and real estate agents would take prospective clients past it on tours.

Integrated listening and reading
Task 2
Read the text, then listen to a part of a lecture on the same topic. You will notice that
some ideas coincide and some differ in them. Answer questions 16 - 25 by choosing A
if the idea is expressed in both materials, B if it can be found only in the reading text,
C if it can be found only in the audio-recording, and D if neither of the materials
expresses the idea.
Now you have 7 minutes to read the text.
THE TURING TEST
Do computers think? It isn't a new question. In fact, Alan Turing, a British
mathematician, proposed an experiment to answer the question in 1950, and the test,
known as the Turing Test, is still used today. In the experiment, a group of people
are asked to interact with something in another room through a computer terminal.
They don't know whether it is another person or a computer that they are interacting
with. They can ask any questions that they want. They can type their questions onto

стр. 3 из 8 v1
a computer screen, or they can ask their questions by speaking into a microphone.
In response, they see the answers on a computer screen or they hear them played
back by a voice synthesizer. At the end of the test, the people have to decide whether
they have been talking to a person or to a computer. If they judge the computer to be
a person, or if they can't determine the difference, then the machine has passed the
Turing Test.
Since 1950, a number of contests have been organized in which machines are
challenged to the Turing Test. In 1990, Hugh Loebner sponsored a prize to be
awarded by the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies - a gold medal and a cash
award of $100,000 to the designer of the computer that could pass the Turing Test;
however, so far, no computer has passed the test.
Now listen to a part of a lecture on a similar topic and then do the tasks (16-25),
comparing the text above and the lecture. You will hear the lecture twice.
16. It is not quite clear whether computers can think.
17. Participants of an experiment can introduce their questions into a computer either
by speaking or by typing.
18. If people take the computer for a human being, it will mean that the computer has
passed the Turing Test.
19. The idea of challenging computers to the Turing Test is still alive.
20. Only one computer in the world has passed the Turing Test.
21. A prize of 100,000 US dollars sponsored by Hugh Loebner in 1990 was not
awarded to any computer designer.
22. Some scholars doubt that the Turing Test can check what it claims to check.
23. The idea of the Chinese Room as a paradox isn’t new.
24. An argument based on Chinese characters has been developed to show that the
Turing Test isn’t meaningful.

WANT TO BE FRIENDS?
Could the benefits of online social networking be too good to miss out on?
(I)
For many hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, online networking has
become enmeshed in our daily lives. However, it is a decades-old insight from a study
of traditional social networks that best illuminates one of the most important aspects of
today’s online networking. In 1973 sociologist Mark Granovetter showed how the
loose acquaintances, or ‘weak ties’, in our social network exert a disproportionate
influence over our behaviour and choices. Granovetter’s research showed that a
significant percentage of people get their jobs as a result of recommendations or advice
provided by a weak tie. Today our number of weak-tie contacts has exploded via online
social networking. ‘You couldn’t maintain all of those weak ties on your own,’ says
Jennifer Golbeck of the University of Maryland. ‘Online sites, such as Facebook, give
you a way of cataloguing them.’ The result? It’s now significantly easier for the school
friend you haven’t seen in years to pass you a tip that alters your behaviour, from
recommendation of a low-cholesterol breakfast cereal to a party invite where you meet
your future wife or husband.
(II)
The explosion of weak ties could have profound consequences for our social
structures too, according to Judith Donath of the Berkman Center for Internet and
Society at Harvard University. ‘We’re already seeing changes,’ she says. For example,
many people now turn to their online social networks ahead of sources such as
newspapers and television for trusted and relevant news or information. What they hear
could well be inaccurate, but the change is happening nonetheless. If these huge
‘supernets’ - some of them numbering up to 5,000 people - continue to thrive and
grow, they could fundamentally change the way we share information and transform
our notions of relationships.
(III)
But are these vast networks really that relevant to us on a personal level?
Robin Dunbar, an evolutionary anthropologist at the University of Oxford, believes
that our primate brains place a cap on the number of genuine social relationships we
can actually cope with: roughly 150. According to Dunbar, online social networking
Всероссийская олимпиада школьников по английскому языку
2017 г.
региональный этап
стр. 5 из 8 v1
appears to be very good for ‘servicing’ relationships, but not for establishing them. He
argues that our evolutionary roots mean we still depend heavily on physical and face-
to-face contact to be able to create ties.
(IV)
Nonetheless, there is evidence that online networking can transform our daily
interactions. In an experiment at Cornell University, psychologist Jeff Hancock asked
participants to try to encourage other participants to like them via instant messaging
conversation. Beforehand, some members of the trial were allowed to view the
Facebook profile of the person they were trying to win over. He found that those with
Facebook access asked questions to which they already knew the answers or raised
things they had in common, and as a result were much more successful in their social
relationships. Hancock concluded that people who use these sites to keep updated on
the activities of their acquaintances are more likely to be liked in subsequent social
interactions.
(V)
Online social networking may also have tangible effects on our well-being.
Nicole Ellison of Michigan State University found that the frequency of networking
site use correlates with greater self-esteem. Support and affirmation from the weak ties
could be the explanation, says Ellison. ‘Asking your close friends for help or advice is
nothing new, but we are seeing a lowering of barriers among acquaintances,’ she says.
People are readily sharing personal feelings and experiences to a wider circle than they
might once have done. Sandy Pentland at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
agrees. ‘The ability to broadcast to our social group means we need never feel alone,’
he says. ‘The things that befall us are often due to a lack of social support. There’s
more of a safety net now.’
(VI)
Henry Holzman, also at MIT, who studies the interface between online social
networking and the real world, points out that increased visibility also means our
various social spheres - family, work, friends - are merging, and so we will have to
prepare for new societal norms. ‘We’ll have to learn how to live a more transparent
life,’ he says. ‘We may have to give up some ability to show very limited glimpses of
ourselves to others.’
(VII) Another way that online networking appears to be changing our social
structures is through dominance. In one repeated experiment, Michael Kearns of the
University of Pennsylvania asked 30 volunteers to quickly reach consensus in an online
game over a choice between two colours. Each person was offered a cash reward if
they succeeded in persuading the group to pick one or other colour. All participants
could see the colour chosen by some of the other people, but certain participants had
an extra advantage: the ability to see more of the participants’ chosen colours than
others. Every time Kearns found that those who could see the choices of more
participants (in other words, were better connected) persuaded the group to pick their
colour, even when they had to persuade the vast majority to give up their financial

incentive. While Kearns warns that the setting was artificial, he says it’s possible that
greater persuasive power could lie with well-connected individuals in the everyday
online world too.

Sydney Opera House
The architectural design for the Sydney Opera House was chosen from more than 230 projects
provided by the architects from 32 countries who took part in the international contest in 1956.
The winner was John Utzon, formerly unknown young architect from Denmark, who suggested a
unique concept of a theatre. He perceived his work as a sculpture rather than a building because it
seemed to change its shape depending on where it was viewed from. According to Utzon, the
structure with its soaring, sail-like roofs would fit in with the environment - the harbour it’s

surrounded by. There’s no doubt that the famous building is one of the indisputable masterpieces
of human creativity, not only in the 20th century but in the history of humankind. It is often said to
define the city, country and continent. Though its name suggests a single venue, the building
comprises multiple venues which together are among the busiest performing arts centres - hosting
well over 1,500 performances annually, attended by more than 1.2 million people.
Utzon made a project far ahead of available technology: the roof alone required almost 2,200 precast
concrete sections. The material used to make the ribbed shells for the roof was very new in
construction engineering at that time. Besides, computer technology was just beginning to catch
up with the complex structural models needed for the architect’s ideas to be implemented in
practice. That is why Utzon had to reconsider the details for building the roof sails to facilitate
engineers’ work. One of the challenges was stabilising the shells that were nearly 200 feet high.
Ten years after the design was accepted, the opera house was not even near completion. It had
been under construction for 17 years before it was opened in 1973. By that time Utzon had resigned
from the project which was later completed by other architects. However, it is thanks to John Utzon
that the Sydney Opera House is among the most outstanding buildings in the world.
Now listen to a part of a lecture on the same topic and then do the tasks (questions 16-25),
comparing the text above and the lecture. You will hear the lecture TWICE.
16. Utzon’s design doesn’t follow the patterns of skyscrapers.
17. The building hosts more than one theatre.
18. Some parts of the structure are made of sea shells which were hard to stabilise.
19. The Sydney Opera House is a clear example of Organic School in architecture.
20. One of the features of the building is that innovative materials were used for its construction.
21. Frank Lloyd Wright took more notice of the practical use of the building than its artistic
novelty.
22. Utzon believed that sculpture and architecture were very closely related forms of art.
23. The building fits into the surrounding environment.
24. Architects of the time could not completely rely on computer technologies.
25. When the Opera House was opened, it hadn’t been completed yet.

Task 4
Read the text and answer questions 26-40 below.
Fifteen Cornwall: Dave Meneer on a successful social enterprise
1
Fifteen Cornwall turns five in May and with five hard, inspiring and incredibly worthwhile years
behind us, we've had 61 graduates, 400,000 diners and £15m worth of business during this time. I
am proud to say Fifteen Cornwall is a social enterprise success. Why? Because we understand
what a social enterprise is. There is a lot of nonsense spoken about them these days, like they were
something new or that they were “not for profit”. Our definition is simple: Can you square the
“triple bottom line” - do you have a clear social aim? We do, turning disadvantaged kids into the
chefs of the future. Can you make money, hopefully lots of it? We do. Don't give us that “not for
profit” guff! Can you do all that while walking a little more lightly on the planet? We do. But we
can get better. Tick all those three boxes and you're on your way; score well on two but not on the
other and you are not really a social enterprise.
2
For those not familiar with the concept, Fifteen Cornwall takes some of the most challenged young
people in Cornwall (NEET as they are known - Not in Education, Employment or Training) and
helps them do something positive with their lives. It challenges the problems of youth employment
and social exclusion through the restaurant and college training programme, and is supported
through essential counselling care. We are looked after by Cornwall Foundation of Promise, our
charity that enables us to keep on track and provide the right amount of money for the right
elements of our social enterprise. Without social purpose, Fifteen Cornwall would just be another
fancy restaurant and without the commercial reality of a restaurant, we'd be just a glorified youth
centre unconnected to the market and the real demands of the restaurant business.

With the training programme costing around half a million pounds a year, it is not cheap to run.
For this reason we need to maintain various income streams. Restaurant trade is good but we
always have to ensure we are ahead of the game. We invest in marketing and PR to ensure the
message gets out there and people come to the restaurant. It is this kind of specific marketing
activity that guarantees we can see advanced bookings so we know where we are each month. The
project also receives vital funding from the public sector, which has enabled Fifteen Cornwall to
become a reality. It has grown into an unashamedly commercial social enterprise and restaurant,
dedicated to putting 100% of its profits back into the development of young people and suppliers
from Cornwall.
4
For social enterprise success, you need to have something that really means something to people -
and then back it up with a commercially driven and sound business plan. You need to have a team
of people who really know what they are doing - and some (even if not all of them) who know
how to make money. You need the best from the private sector combined with the best in the
charity sector and this is what I think we have here at Fifteen Cornwall.
5
What's next for Fifteen? Over the past five years our focus has been to concentrate on consolidating
the two income streams I mentioned. In terms of the future we cannot rest on our laurels and will
need to explore other sources of income. Finding sources of finance is certainly not unique to our
business or to any social enterprise - but being creative and genuine about it is what counts. We
need to continue making incredible food, serve our customers but also look for new and exciting
ways to make sure funds never stop coming in.
