Read the text and questions below. For each question 7-11 mark the correct letter a,
b, c or d.
Laughter is the best medicine
Every week, Dr Doppit goes round the wards at the children’s hospital. But
instead of a white coat and a stethoscope, Dr Doppit has a red nose and carries
balloons. She is the hospital’s “clown doctor” and her real name is Hilary Day.
After studying drama at university, Hilary saw an advert for a clown doctor at
the hospital. “The job was perfect for me,” she says. “My mother and grandmother
were both nurses, so caring for people is in my blood. Also, I love doing children’s
theatre.”
Before she started, Hilary did four weeks training, where she learnt how to do
magic tricks and make balloons into funny shapes. She also had to study child
psychology and basic medicine.
Her visits to the hospital start with a meeting with the nursing stuff to find out
which patients a visit will be most useful for. Most children are delighted to see a
clown, but there are some who are too ill, or areafraid of clowns. Hilary always
checks first. Then she does some magic, makes balloon animals or tells them a story.
“We know that laughing can have a positive effect on a person’s health,” says
Hilary. “It produces chemicals in the brain that make you relax and feel better.”
Everyone agrees that regular visits from Dr Doppit can make a big difference to a
child’s recovery.
“Children in hospital miss their everyday life at home and at
school,” says one hospital manager.
“As well as possibly being frightened and
homesick they are often bored. The clown doctor gives them something to look
forward to and happy memories to take home afterwards.”
7. What is the writer’s aim in this text?
a) to describe a typical day in a children’s hospital
b) to explain a method of helping young patients
c) to encourage doctors to learn some circus skills
d) to show students how to get a job in a hospital
8. Why was Hilary particularly suitable for the job of clown doctor?
a) She had studied medicine at university.
b) She already knew how to do magic.
c) She enjoyed working with children.
d) She had been a nurse in a hospital.

Read the article and title a-f each paragraph 12-16. There is one title you do NOT
need to use.
a) Saving sea resources
b) Distant operating
c) No kitchen
d) Replacing meat
e) New eating habits
f) More veggies
What’s cooking?
(12) Tomorrow’s children will eat differently from their parents. Many modern
homes don’t have a dining room because the occupants usually eat meals in front of
the television. In the future, families eating together at home will be an unusual event.
Food will be heated in a microwave. If there is a cooker, it will be on a dining table
rather than in the kitchen.
(13) The kitchen of the future will be intelligent! Thanks to automation, it may
be possible to call home on a mobile to start a cooking programme. There is nothing
better than to come home after a long working day to see your dinner ready. With
such a kitchen you can easily organize a party for your friends.
(14) In the future, fewer Europeans will eat meat because they think that other
foods are better for their health. In addition, farmers will realise that growing crops is
a more efficient use of land than raising cattle. “Every time a person gives up eating
beef,” says food expert Brian Ford, “three thousand square metres of land are freed
for crop production.”
(15) But meat is a major source of protein. How will we get the protein we
need without meat? The answer is: from plant sources. Mushrooms and other fungi
will be specially grown, fortified with vitamins and artificially flavoured. Artificial
flavouring will become widespread.
(16) According to Ford, fish will always be popular. “Fish, especially oily fish,
have much to contribute to the diet of the future. The problem is that we are catching
too many fish. We need to reestablish sanctuaries - “national parks” - in the oceans
where fish are free to multiply.”

Part 2 (30 minutes)
Reading
Read the passage below and answer questions 1-10.
The Green House Effect
(A) Saving the world begins at home. The energy we use to power our daily domestic
lives and drive our cars produces almost half of our output of carbon dioxide, the gas
which is the main contributor to the problem of global warming. The way in which
we use energy is not only polluting but also incredibly wasteful. But there is nothing
to stop us greatly reducing our energy consumption and creating a more comfortable
world.
(B) Redesigning the home to bring our lifestyles more into balance with what the
environment can cope with need not involve expensive or painful changes. Most of
the technology to make the changes is already available. When the changes have been
made, the home of the future will be a better place to live in. So what will it be like?
(C) We will have switched from ‘fossil fuels’ - coal, gas and oil - to sources of
power which are non-polluting such as windmills or using the power of tides. Houses
will be heavily insulated and heating systems made much more efficient. In addition,
our future homes will use low-energy light bulbs.
(D) With water costs rising enormously, most houses will trap rainwater and store it
in a large, well-insulated tank in the cellar. This tank also serves to save energy: heat
is recycled from other parts of the house to maintain a high water temperature for
washing and central heating.
(E) Recycling waste will be much more common than it is today. Tins, bottles,
plastic, and paper will be put into vents in the wall from where they will fall into
divided bins for collection. All vegetable matter will go straight on to a compost heap
in the garden.
(F) The home will be a cleaner place. Air conditioning will do much more than keep
you cool. It will improve air quality by filtering out contaminating dust mites and by
controlling moisture and condensation.
(G) Outside the home as well, life will have become more pleasant. The car will no
longer be the threat to our health that it is today: it will run on hydrogen or a mixture
of battery and safer petrol. It won’t be allowed to clog up our cities: people will use
the tram, a clean, fast, and quiet form of city transport which many cities are already
reintroducing.
(H) This picture of the future is one which should appeal to all of us. It’s one that our
grandchildren could take for granted, not believing that people lived any other way,
that people went around polluting, destroying, wasting resources, and apparently not
caring. But if we want our grandchildren to have a world which is cleaner and safer,

we have to start to change our ways. The picture of the future can become a reality
but only if we do something about it. And we should do something about it soon.
Questions 1-4.
Below you will find four headings. Each heading describes the contents of one of the
paragraphs in the passage. However, since there are eight paragraphs and only four
headings, four of the paragraphs will not fit any of the headings below.
You need to choose which heading best describes which paragraph. Write the letter
of a paragraph next to the number of the heading 1-4 on the separate answer sheet.
1. Homes of the future will be more hygienic.
2. We ought to change the way we live.
3. The way we live now damages the world.
4. Future energy needs will be lower and not cause pollution.
Questions 5-10.
Choose option A, B, C or D which best answers the question. Circle the correct letter
in boxes 5-10 on your answer sheet.
5. The author’s intention in writing the above article was to show…
A. the sort of future we can expect for our grandchildren.
B. why we should reduce pollution and use energy more efficiently.
C. why we have taken steps to reduce pollution and improve our use of energy.
D. how changes in house design will encourage people to use less polluting
energy.
6. Which of the following statements is the author most likely to agree with?
A. In the future, houses will be much healthier.
B. In the future, people will produce much less waste.
C. In the future, very few people will own their own car.
D. In the future, the problem of global warming will be better understood.
7. In the passage the author explains…
A. why using less energy has become more popular.
B. why sources of energy are going to become more scarce.
C. how savings could be made in the way energy is used.
D. how, unless we use less energy, energy costs will rise.
8. In the passage the author DOES NOT explain…
A. how our cities could be made cleaner.
B. why our use of energy needs to change.
C. why water costs will rise in the future.
D. how the way we live produces global warming.

A. cars will be much cheaper to maintain.
B. fewer people will travel in the cities.
C. cars will have far more safety features.
D. cars will be used less than they are today.
10. The passage describes the homes of the future. Such homes, according to the
author, might NOT be built if we…

whether the statements 1-10 are True (A), or False (B) according to the text you

Now you have 30 seconds to look through the items.
(pause 30 seconds)
Now we begin.
NARRATOR: These are all sculptures by the artist Constantin Brancusi. We’re
going to look at the one that has three parts: a top, a bottom and a middle. For the
bottom, Brancusi carved a big piece of oak into circles and half circles. For the
middle, he chipped away a piece of hard limestone into a square. And the cute shiny
metal piece on top, made of bronze, looks a bit like a fat teardrop.
Hold your hands up so that you see each of the three pieces, one at a time. Which do
you like better, one at a time, or all three together? Brancusi liked to show opposites
together - rough and shiny, or circles and squares, something hard next to something
soft. He thought each one made the other one look more interesting.
Did you see the name of the sculpture? If not, find the label and take a look. Then
press PLAY.
NARRATOR: I bet you wouldn’t have guessed Young Bird. How is that shiny
teardrop a bird? Well, Brancusi made lots of bird sculptures, and the first ones did
look a lot more like real birds opening their mouths to sing. But he kept making them
simpler and simpler until what was left was the feeling of a bird. But this one is just a
baby bird that hasn’t even learned to fly. Its mouth is open, see the flat section on one
side? - but instead of singing, it’s probably waiting for someone to drop in a big fat
worm for dinner!
NARRATOR: Paintings like this one, by artist Piet Mondrian, have been puzzling
people for a long time.
NARRATOR: [wryly] Why am I not surprised? Here we go again.
RULES VOICE: A painting should be like a magical window that opens onto
another world of beauty!
NARRATOR: Well, if this painting is supposed to be a window -
NARRATOR: - then Mondrian has closed the shutters tight! He wanted you to look
at his painting and not have to make believe you’re looking at a faraway mountain, or
a bowl of fruit. His lines and colors aren’t pretending to be anything else. They’re just
lines and colors. At first, it seems too simple to be interesting. But take some time to
just look. First, pick one of the bright colors. There are just a few: Red, blue, or
1

Школьный этап. 9-11 классы
yellow. Now, let your eyes jump from one section of your color to the next. Where do
you jump?
Now, pick a line - any one will do. Follow that line with your eyes, until it hits
another line. Where does it take you next? Notice all the different sizes of rectangles
the lines make. The big fat ones in the middle, and the tall, skinny ones along the
edges.
Mondrian never used a ruler - he painted all those perfectly straight lines with his
own hand. Get up a little closer, and you can see where his brush carefully moved
across the canvas. You can also see his signature along the bottom edge. It’s simple,
too: Just the capital letters - P and M.
Mondrian liked to listen to music while he painted - the hippest music of his day! He
liked it so much, it made him dance around his studio all by himself. If you want to
hear what it was, just press the green PLAY button.
Now you have 20 seconds to check your answers.

Sailing round the world
Many people think that Ferdinand Magellan was the first person to travel
around the world. His expedition was the first to do this but Magellan himself died
on the trip when he found himself fighting a battle on an island in the Philippines.
The Spanish captain Juan Sebastian Elcano became the new leader of the expedition.
He arrived back in Spain in 1522 after a journey of just over three years. Seventeen
other members of the original expedition had survived with him.
The British sailor Sir Francis Drake became the first person to lead a complete
expedition around the world. His three-year journey began in 1577. On the journey,
Drake attacked many Spanish ships carrying gold from the New World. He also took
their maps, which were better than his own. These maps helped him to find the best
routes to complete his journey.
One of the strangest round the world journeys was by Jason Lewis. Lewis took
13 years to complete his journey. His method of transport? An eight-metre “pedalo” -
a pedal-powered boat. Lewis was the first person to go round the world by human
power alone. On land, he travelled by bike and on Rollerblades™! The most
terrifying incident during the whole trip was when a salt-water crocodile attacked him
while he was in the water in a kayak. He reached a deserted beach and got out of the
kayak but the crocodile started to eat the boat. In the end the crocodile left. Jason set
fire to the rest of his kayak. A pilot in a small plane saw the smoke and rescued him.
Dee Caffari was born in Britain in 1973. In 2006 she became the first woman
to sail solo non-stop around the world the “wrong way”. The wrong way means going
west, against the winds and sea currents. It took her 178 days. In 2008-2009 it took
her just 99 days to sail alone around the world in the usual direction. And so she
became the first woman in history to sail around the world single-handed in both
directions. On the voyage, she sailed through icebergs and could only sleep for
periods of twenty minutes. When she got back, what she wanted most was a pizza, a
diet cola and a bath!
Task 2

is one extra sentence which you do NOT need to use.
Shopping now and then
Many of us enjoy going shopping. We love the hustle of going to the high
street, looking at shop windows, talking to shop assistants, examining various goods,
comparing prices, trying clothes on and, finally, a few hours later, returning home
exhausted, carrying bags full of brand new things.

(21) _____ In fact, when most consumers these days think of shopping they
think of a one-stop visit to a shopping centre.
There are, however, quite a few people that don’t really like going shopping.
When they absolutely have to buy something, they plan carefully, choose what they
want and where they can get it, go to the shop, swiftly buy what they want and rush
back home. (22) _____ They shop online or by mail order, and get everything
delivered to them, without having to leave the comfort of their home.
Most teenagers, though, really enjoy going to the shopping mall. (23) _____
For them, it’s not so much a place where they can do their shopping as one where
they can socialize and make new friends. As a result, teenagers often arrange to meet
and hang out at the mall, even if they have no intention of going shopping.
This function of the shopping centre seems very much the same as the function
of some of the oldest covered markets in the East, which can be seen as the
forerunner of the modern mall. (24) _____ The first covered market in the East was
Isfahan’s Grand Bazaar, whose buildings go back to the 10th century, while the Grand
Bazaar of Istanbul, which was built in the 15th century, with its 58 streets and over
4,000 shops, is still one of the largest covered markets in the world.
It seems that people’s habits haven’t really changed very much over the
centuries. (25) _____ In the same way that people in the Middle East have always
met, done business and had a cup of coffee in the traditional bazaars, contemporary
teenagers meet and have fun in the multiplex cinemas and fast food restaurants of the
various malls.
a) In addition, the shopping experience in those markets is very different from
what most of us are used to.
b) This is a large shopping centre which contains hundreds of different shops, as
well as other places where you can relax or have fun.
c) Alternatively, we go to large department stores or shopping centres and spend
half the day there, shopping to our heart’s content.
d) Going to the market was, and still is, a social networking event more than
anything else.
e) Others don’t even go to the trouble of visiting the shops.
f) These markets are known as bazaars, which in Persian means “the place
of prices”.

Reading
Read the passage below and do tasks 1-15.
South Pole Adventurer
In the race to the South Pole, there was a Japanese team attempting to be first,
led by heroic explorer Nobu Shirase.
(1) For a few weeks in January 1912, Antarctica was full of explorers.
Norwegian Roald Amundsen reached the South Pole on 14 December and was
speeding back to the coast. On 17 January, Robert Scott and the men of the British
Antarctic expedition arrived at the pole to find they had been beaten to it. Just then, a
third man arrived; Japanese explorer Nobu Shirase. However, his part in one of the
greatest adventure stories of the
20th century is hardly known outside his own
country, even by fellow explorers. Yet, as Scott was nearing the pole and with the
rest of the world still unaware of Amundsen’s triumph, Shirase and his team sailed
into Antarctica’s Bay of Whales in the smallest ship ever to try its luck in these
dangerous waters.
(2) Since boyhood Shirase had dreamed of becoming a polar explorer. Like
Amundsen, he initially set his sights on the North Pole. But after the American
Robert Peary claimed to have reached it in 1909, both men hastily altered their plans.
Instead they would aim for the last big prize: the South Pole. In January 1910, Shirase
put his plans before Japanese government officials, promising to raise the flag at the
South Pole within three years. For many of them, the question wasn’t “could he do
it”, but why would it be worth doing? 15 years earlier the International Geographical
Congress had said that as the last unknown continent the Antarctic offered the chance
to add to knowledge in almost every branch of science. So, like the British, Shirase
presented his expedition as a search for knowledge: he would bring back fossils,
make meteorological measurements and explore unknown parts of the continent.
(3) The response from the government was not enthusiastic, however, and
Shirase struggled to raise funds. Fortunately, a few months later, Japan’s former
prime minister Shigenobu Okuma came to Shirase’s rescue. With Okuma’s backing,
Shirase got together just enough money to buy and equip a small ship. He eventually
acquired a scientist, too, called Terutaro Takeda. At the end of November 1910, his
ship the Kainan Maru finally left Tokyo with 27 men and 28 Siberian dogs on board.
Before leaving, Shirase confidently outlined his plans to the media. He would sail to
New Zealand, then reach Antarctica in February, during the southern summer, and
then proceed to the pole the following spring. This was not to be, however. Bad
weather delayed the expedition and they didn’t reach New Zealand until 8 February.

Amundsen and Scott had already been in Antarctica for a month, preparing for
winter.
(4) In New Zealand local reporters were astonished: the ship was half the size
of Amundsen’s ship. True, it was reinforced with iron plate and extra wood, but the
ship had only the feeblest engine to help force its way through ice. Few doubted
Shirase’s courage, but most thought the expedition to be ill-prepared as the Japanese
had only lightweight sledges for transport across the ice, made of bamboo and wood.
(5) But Shirase’s biggest challenge was time. Antarctica is only accessible by
sea for a few weeks in summer and expeditions usually aimed to arrive in January or
February. ‘Even with their determination and daring, our Japanese friends are running
it rather fine,’ wrote local reporters. Nevertheless, on 11 February the Kainan Maru
left New Zealand and sailed straight into the worst weather the captain had ever seen.
Then, on 6 March, they approached the coastline of Antarctica’s Ross Sea, looking
for a place to land. The ice began to close in, threatening to trap them for the winter,
an experience no one was likely to survive. With a remarkable piece of seamanship,
the captain steered the ship out of the ice and turned north. They would have to wait
out the winter in a warmer climate.
(6) A year later than planned, Shirase and six men finally reached Antarctica.
Catching up with Scott or Amundsen was out of the question and he had said he
would stick to science this time. Yet Shirase still felt the pull of the pole and
eventually decided he would head southward to experience the thrills and hardships
of polar exploration he had always dreamed of. With provisions for 20 days, he and
four men would see how far they could get.
(7) Shirase set off on 20 January 1912 with Takeda and two dog handlers,
leaving two men at the edge of the ice shelf to make meteorological measurements.
For a week they struggled through one blizzard after another, holing up in their tents
during the worst of the weather. The temperature fell to -25°C, and frostbite claimed
some of the dogs. On 26 January, Shirase estimated there were enough provisions to
continue for two more days. Two days later, he announced it was time to turn back.
Takeda calculated they had reached 80° 5 south and had travelled 250 kilometres.
The men hoisted the Japanese flag.
(8) On 3 February, all the men were heading home. The ship reached Tokyo in
June 1912 - and Shirase was greeted like a hero despite the fact that he never reached
the pole. Nor did he contribute much to science - but then nor did Amundsen, whose
only interest was in being first to the pole. Yet Shirase’s expedition was heroic. They
travelled beyond 80° south, one of only four teams to have gone so far south at the
time. Furthermore, they did it all without the advantages of the other teams and with
no previous experience.

Task 2
Read the text about marsupials - the animals that carry their newly born babies in a
pocket on the mother’s body, then listen to a part of a lecture on a similar topic. You
will notice that some ideas coincide and some differ in the two materials. Answer
questions 16-25 by choosing A if the idea is expressed in both materials, B if it can
be found only in the reading text, C if it can be found only in the audio-recording,
and D if neither of the materials expresses the idea.
Now you have 7 minutes to read the text.
Marsupials
Marsupials are a group of mammals that are born alive after a very short
gestation period. Since a marsupial appears quite early in its life cycle, it must
complete its development while nursing. In order to survive, the young
underdeveloped marsupial, immediately after its birth, must crawl over its mother's
body to a fold of skin known as a pouch. During further development, which can last
weeks or months, depending on the species, a marsupial nurses and grows inside the
pouch. Most marsupials do not form family groups. It is the female marsupial that
cares for the offspring. The young marsupial may stay with the mother for more than
a year, climbing in and out of the pouch to nurse or sleep.
Although marsupials once ranged throughout North and South America, as
well as in Antarctica, only a few species now live outside of New Zealand and
Australia where more than 250 species are still found. There is quite a diversity of
marsupials within these species, and they have adapted to a number of different
habitats; however, some characteristics are universal among them. The senses of
hearing and smell are very important to marsupials because they are nocturnal
creatures that depend on their ears and nose to locate their food at night. Some
marsupials prefer plants, although others eat insects or meat. Like other mammals,
marsupials are covered with hair. Unlike other mammals, however, marsupials have
additional bones to support the pouch, which is their unique adaptation.

Now listen to a part of a lecture on a similar topic and then do the tasks (16-25),
comparing the text above and the lecture. You will hear the lecture twice.
16. The time spent by a marsupial in its mother’s body before it is born is very short.
17. Babies of this species stay with their mother for a year or so and only then
become independent.
18. Very few marsupials live in Eurasia.
19. Years ago these animals populated other continents though today most of them
live in Australia and New Zealand.
20. When it is born, the animal is only 19 millimeters long and has no fur.
21. These animals sleep in the daytime and search for their food at night.
22. Of all types of food, it prefers the leaves of a particular plant.
23. These animals look like bears, though they belong to another group of mammals.
24. The skeleton of marsupials differs from that of other mammals, as it is adapted to
reinforce the pouch.
25. The koala came to Australia from New Zealand.

Task 3
Read the text “The Penny Black” and answer questions 26-40 below.
The Penny Black
It might not have looked very impressive, but the Penny Black, now 170
years old, was the first stamp to be created and it launched the modern postal
system in Britain.
XVII Всероссийская олимпиада школьников по английскому языку
2016 г.

стр. 4 из 8
Before 1840 and the arrival of the Penny Black, you had to be rich and
patient to use the Royal Mail. Delivery was charged according to the miles
travelled and the number of sheets of paper used; a 2-page letter sent from
Edinburgh to London, for example, would have cost 2 shillings, or more than £7 in
today's money. And when the top-hatted letter carrier came to deliver it, it was the
recipient who had to pay for the postage. Letter writers employed various ruses to
reduce the cost, doing everything possible to cram more words onto a page.
Nobody bothered with heavy envelopes; instead, letters would be folded and sealed
with wax. You then had to find a post office - there were no pillar boxes - and
hope your addressee didn't live in one of the several rural areas which were not
served by the system. If you were lucky, your letter would arrive (it could take
days) without being read or censored.
The state of mail had been causing concern throughout the 1830s, but it was
Rowland Hill, an inventor, teacher and social reformer from Kidderminster, who
proposed a workable plan for change. Worried that a dysfunctional, costly service
would stifle communication just as Britain was in the swing of its second industrial
revolution, he believed reform would ease the distribution of ideas and stimulate
trade and business, delivering the same promise as the new railways.
Hill's proposal for the penny post, which meant any letter weighing less than
half an ounce (14 grams) could be sent anywhere in Britain for about 30p in
today's money, was so radical that the Postmaster General, Lord Lichfield, said:
“Of all the wild and visionary schemes which I ever heard of, it is the most
extravagant.” Lord Lichfield spoke for an establishment not convinced of the need
for poor people to post anything. But merchants and reformers backed Hill. Soon
the government told him to make his scheme work. And that meant inventing a
new type of currency.
Hill quickly settled on “a bit of paper covered at the back with a glutinous
wash which the user might, by applying a little moisture, attach to the back of a

letter”. Stamps would be printed in sheets of 240 that could be cut using scissors or
a knife. Perforations would not arrive until 1854. The idea stuck, and in August
1839 the Treasury launched a design competition open to “all artists, men of
science and the public in general”. The new stamp would need to be resistant to
forgery, and so it was a submission by one Mr Cheverton that Hill used as the basis
for one of the most striking designs in history. Cheverton, who worked as a
sculptor and an engineer, determined that a portrait of Queen Victoria, engraved
for a commemorative coin when she was a 15-year-old princess, was detailed
enough to make copying difficult, and recognizable enough to make fakes easy to
spot. The words “Postage” and “One Penny” were added alongside ornamental
stars. Nobody thought to add the word “Britain”, as it was assumed that the stamps
would solely be put to domestic use.
With the introduction of the new postal system, the Penny Black was an
instant hit, and printers struggled to meet demand. By the end of 1840, more than
160 million letters had been sent - more than double the previous year. It created
more work for the post office, whose reform continued with the introduction of red
letter boxes, new branches and more frequent deliveries, even to the remotest
address, but its lasting impact on society was more remarkable.
Hill and his supporters rightly predicted that cheaper post would improve the
“diffusion of knowledge”. Suddenly, someone in Scotland could be reached by
someone in London within a day or two. And as literacy improved, sections of
society that had been disenfranchised found a voice.
Tristram Hunt, a historian, values the “flourishing of correspondence” that
followed the arrival of stamps. “While I was writing my biography of Friedrich
Engels I could read the letters he and Marx sent between Manchester and London,”
he says. “They wrote to each other three times a day, pinging ideas back and forth
so that you can almost follow a real-time correspondence.”
XVII Всероссийская олимпиада школьников по английскому языку
2016 г.
региональный этап
стр. 6 из 8
The penny post also changed the nature of the letter. Weight-saving tricks
such as cross-writing began to die out, while the arrival of envelopes built
confidence among correspondents that mail would not be stolen or read. And so
people wrote more private things
- politically or commercially sensitive
information or love letters. “In the early days of the penny post, there was still
concern about theft.” Hunt says. “Engels would still send Marx money by ripping
up five-pound notes and sending the pieces in different letters.” But the probity of
the postal system became a great thing and it came to be expected that your mail
would not be tampered with.
For all its brilliance, the Penny Black was technically a failure. At first, post
offices used red ink to cancel stamps so that they could not be used again. But the
ink could be removed. When in 1842, it was determined that black ink would be
more robust, the colour of the Penny Black became a sort of browny red, but Hill's
brainchild had made its mark.
