FUNCTION 

Rear spoiler raises automatically when vehicle speed reaches 150 km/h (approx. 94 mph). or 70 km/h (approx. 
43 mph respectively) (USA). If, at this speed sunroof is open or raised then sunroof will close automatically. 

If vehicle speed drops below 130 km/h or 70 km/h (approx. 81 mph or approx. 43 mph respectively) rear spoiler 
will lower automatically. Sunroof will open again. 

Rear Spoiler Control Module -J223- detects malfunctions in rear spoiler system and stores these in a non-
volatile memory. 

Using On Board Diagnostics the malfunctions can be read and repairs undertaken using Guided Fault Finding 
(GFF).

Malfunction in rear spoiler system is indicated via rear spoiler warning lamp -arrow- when in automatic mode. 
Warning lamp also lights up when rear spoiler is raised manually, see REAR SPOILER, MANUALLY 
RAISING AND LOWERING

REAR SPOILER, MANUALLY RAISING AND LOWERING 

Switch for manually raising and lowering rear spoiler (Rear Spoiler Switch -E127-) is located under instrument 

WARNING:

Behavior of the vehicle can change at high speeds if spoiler does not 
move into raised position.

panel near steering column. Raising and lowering rear spoiler manually can only be undertaken when vehicle is 
stationary or travelling less than 150 km/h or 70 km/h (approx. 81 mph or approx. 43 mph respectively).

When ignition is switched on and switch is moved to position -1- rear spoiler moves to fully raised position in 
one movement. Lowering is completed in several steps until limit stop is reached when switch is moved to 
position -2-. 

When working on rear spoiler it is sensible to raise rear spoiler fully before commencing work on unit. 

REAR SPOILER DRIVE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING 

Removing 

z

Raise rear spoiler manually. See REAR SPOILER, MANUALLY RAISING AND LOWERING .  

z

Remove tailgate lower trim. 

See TAILGATE LOWER TRIM PANEL, REMOVING AND INSTALLING . 

WARNING:

z

There is a danger of being caught/trapped!  

z

Always make sure there is sufficient clearance when raising and 
lowering rear spoiler manually.  

NOTE:

Do not press raised spoiler inward (or pull outward) by hand further.

NOTE:

Rear Spoiler Control Module -J223- and Rear Spoiler Motor -V52- are integrated 
in one component and are designated as rear spoiler drive in this description.

Disconnect connector -arrow- from rear spoiler drive -4-. See Fig. 27 . 

z

Loosen screw -1- and open hose clip -2- (unhook).  

z

Remove bolts/screws -3- and remove drive -4- from lower guide tube -5-. Torque setting: Bolts/screws --
3- = 2.5 N.m.

Installing 

Install in reverse order of removal. 

Following work steps must be performed in addition when doing this. 

z

Check parallel running and reinstate if necessary before installing rear spoiler drive, see PARALLEL 
RUNNING, CHECKING AND ADJUSTING
 .  

z

After completing installation of the drive, lower rear spoiler completely using manual switch, then raise it 
again fully using manual switch, see REAR SPOILER, MANUALLY RAISING AND LOWERING , 
to initiate drive limit stop positions.  

REAR SPOILER ASSEMBLY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING 

Removing 

WARNING:

Before working on electrical system: Disconnect battery Ground 
(GND) strap.

NOTE:

The wiring harness connections can be unhooked from the bracket on the 
lower guide tubes -5-.
