Removing and installing power steering gear. See POWER STEERING, SERVICING 

z

Seal line/hose connections on power steering gear if not already done.  

z

Clean outside of power steering gear in surrounding area of the boot.  

z

Open hose clamps and push boot back.  

z

Clamp steering gear on transmission holder T10108 and unscrew tie rod from coupling rod.  

z

To determine center position on the rack. See CENTER POSITION ON STEERING RACK, 
DETERMINING

Installing 

Install in reverse order. 

Tightening torque: 

NOTE:

To clamp steering gear, use hole "5" and the corresponding hole lying opposite 
in transmission holder T10108.

Tie rod to power steering gear 75 N.m (55 ft lb)

Installing boot 

z

Check boot for wear (cuts, cracks) and make sure sealing surfaces are clean.  

z

Install boot, but first turn the tie rod so that the tie rod ball joint tapered pin is in the installation position. 

z

Tighten clip with pliers V.A.G 1275.

Install power steering gear.  

NOTE:

z

Only use genuine clamp-type clips.

Removing and installing power steering gear. See POWER STEERING, SERVICING 

TIE ROD BALL JOINTS, MODIFIED 

The manufacturing process for the tie rod ball joints has been optimized. This has resulted in changes to the 
external shape and length of the internally threaded shaft. 

It was then necessary to modify the tie rods to match the tie rod ball joints. See TIE RODS, MODIFIED 

Introduction will be gradual. 

The modified tie rod ball joints can be recognized by the following features.
