continuity checks are okay. Test is complete. After reconnecting ECM, it is necessary to perform relearn
procedure. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE

8. Beetle (Engine Code AWV)

Check wiring connections on relay panel. See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under ENGINE
PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. Repair as necessary. Verify repairs. Test is
complete. After reconnecting ECM, it is necessary to perform relearn procedure. Perform ECM relearn
procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE .

OUTPUT DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE

Connect scan tool to DLC. DLC is located at left side of steering column. See Fig. 1 . Turn ignition on, engine
off. Using scan tool, follow scan tool manufacturer's instructions to perform Output Diagnostic Test Mode.
Output Diagnostic Test Mode activates the following components in sequence:

1. EVAP Canister Purge Valve (N80)

2. Secondary Air Injection Valve (N112)

3. Secondary Air Injection Pump Relay (J299)

4. Wastegate Bypass Regulator Valve (N75)

5. Camshaft Adjustment Valve (N205)

6. EVAP Leak Detection Pump (V144)

7. Recirculating Valve For Turbocharger (N249), except Passat

8. Brake System Vacuum Pump (V192), A/T - except Beetle

9. Injector, Cylinder 1 (N30), except Beetle

10. Injector, Cylinder 2 (N31), except Beetle

11. Injector, Cylinder 3 (N32), except Beetle

12. Injector, Cylinder 4 (N33), except Beetle

DRIVE CYCLES

NOTE:

Output Diagnostic Test Mode is used when using Scan Tools VAG 1551/1552 or
VAS 5051/5052, always continue with output diagnostic test mode until last
component in output diagnostic test mode test sequence has been checked. If
you are not using Scan Tools VAG 1551/1552 or VAS 5051/5052 follow scan tool
manufacturer's instructions.

NOTE:

When using scan tool in Output Diagnostic Test Mode to activate engine
components, some components may be barely audible. Check component by
touch or use mechanics stethoscope if necessary.

NOTE:

For Test Drive Relearn Procedure and Readiness Code. See TEST DRIVE
RELEARN PROCEDURE and READINESS CODE . If emission related repairs
have been performed or vehicle is to be smog checked, it is recommended that

Warm-Up Phase
Engine started with coolant temperature below 122°F (50°C) - switched off at above 162°F (72°C).

Road Test
Coolant temperature needs to be greater than 176°F (80°C). Idle, partial throttle, full throttle and
overdrive, all must be attained several times. During test drive, apply full throttle until engine speed
exceeds 3500 RPM.

PROGRAMMING

ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (J220) CODING

1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE

CODES .

2. Following scan tool manufacturer's instructions, access coding information from Engine Control Module

(ECM - J220) that is to be replaced, print or record code. Enter code into new ECM as necessary.

3. For ECM coding options, see ECM CODING OPTIONS (GTI & JETTA) table or ECM CODING

OPTIONS (PASSAT) table.

4.

If Engine Control Module (ECM) is replaced, it is necessary to code new ECM. If new ECM is not
properly coded, the following problems may occur:

z

Driveability problems (e.g., harsh shifting).

z

False malfunctions stored in ECM memory.

z

Increased fuel consumption.

z

Increased exhaust emissions.

z

Reduction in transmission life.

z

All ECM functions are not carried out (e.g., EVAP system operation).

z

On front wheel drive vehicles anti-slip regulation (ASR), ASR warning lamp comes on.

ECM CODING (BEETLE)

ECM CODING OPTIONS (GTI & JETTA)

readiness code be read and readiness code be generated if necessary. See
READINESS CODE .

NOTE:

After coding ECM and starting engine for first time, allow engine to idle for
several minutes so ECM can go through learn function. Idle speed may be
erratic while ECM is learning.

CAN DATA BUS OBD INTERFACE (J533) CODING

(1)

USA export model with Low Emissions Vehicle (LEV).

(2)

USA export model with Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV).

NOTE:

Engine control module communicates with all control modules capable of
transferring data via a CAN (Controller Area Network) data bus. Data bus-
compatible control modules are connected together via two data bus wires
twisted together (CAN high and CAN low) and exchange information
(messages). If information is not available in the CAN data bus from any one of
the control modules in the CAN data bus system it will be recognized as a
malfunction by the engine control module as well as other CAN data bus control
modules. The CAN data bus requires a matching resistor to function fault-free.
This central matching resistor is located in the engine control module.

NOTE:

Can Data Bus OBD Interface (J533) is also referred to as "Gateway" by
Volkswagen. Can Data Bus OBD Interface (J533) is an integral part of
Instrument Cluster Control Module (J285). Can Data Bus OBD Interface (J533)
must be coded independently of Instrument Cluster Control Module (J285).
From model year 2001, it is not necessary to enter coding for Transmission
Control Module (J217), when coding Can Data Bus OBD Interface (J533). From
model year 2002, Comfort System Central Control Module (J393) is integrated
into Can Data Bus, it is not necessary to enter coding for Comfort System
Central Control Module (J393).

NOTE:

Manufacturer recommends using Scan Tool (VAG 1551/1552 or VAS 5051/5052).
For location of Data Link Connector (DLC), see RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC
TROUBLE CODES .
