ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (J220) CODING (FUNCTION 07)

1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE

CODES . If DTCs are present and repairs are needed, see DTC IDENTIFICATION table.

2. Erase ECM memory. Manufacturer does not provide ECM coding information for engine codes AVH and

AZG. Manufacturer recommends Test Drive Relearn Procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN
PROCEDURE
.

3. Adapt engine immobilizer. See IMMOBILIZER ADAPTATION TO ECM (J220) .

4. On vehicles equipped with A/T, perform adaptation of A/T to its Basic Setting. See A/T BASIC

SETTING . Adapt A/T kickdown position. See ADAPTING KICKDOWN FUNCTION .

(Controller Area Network) data bus. Data bus-compatible control modules are connected together via two data
bus wires twisted together (CAN high and CAN low) and exchange information (messages). If information is
not available in the CAN data bus from any one of the control modules in the CAN data bus system it will be
recognized as a malfunction by the engine control module as well as other CAN data bus control modules. The
CAN data bus requires a matching resistor to function fault-free. Centralized matching resistor is an integral of
ECM.

Engine Codes AVH/AZG - 2001

Connect scan tool. For location of Data Link Connector (DLC), see Fig. 1 . Turn ignition on. Press keys "1" and
"9" for address word "19" (Gateway) and enter by pressing "Q" key. Press keys "0" and "7" for "Code Control
Module" function "7" and enter by pressing "Q" key. Enter code into CAN data bus Interface (J533). For coding
options, see Fig. 8 . Codes from each individual control module are added together to create CAN data bus
interface code. Enter (e.g.) 00007 if equipped with A/T, ABS and Airbag, (A/T activated 00001 + ABS
activated 00002 + Airbag activated 00004 = 00007).

Engine Codes AVH/AZG - 2002 and 2003

Connect scan tool. For location of Data Link Connector (DLC), see Fig. 1 . Turn ignition on. Press keys "1" and

NOTE:

Manufacturer recommends using Scan Tool (VAG 1551/1552 or VAS 5051/5052).
Can Data Bus OBD Interface (J533) is also referred to as "Gateway" by
Volkswagen. Can Data Bus OBD Interface (J533) is an integral part of
instrument cluster. Can Data Bus OBD Interface (J533) must be coded
independently of Instrument Cluster Control Module (J285).

NOTE:

From model year 2002, it is not necessary to enter coding for Transmission
Control Module (J217), when coding Can Data Bus OBD Interface (J533). From
model year 2002, Comfort System Central Control Module (J393) is integrated
into Can Data Bus and it is not necessary to enter coding for Comfort System
Central Control Module (J393).
