Reading Readiness Code - Scan Tool VAG 1551/1552 Or VAS 5051/5052

To read readiness code, connect scan tool to DLC. DLC is located left side of steering column. See Fig. 1 . Turn
ignition on, engine off. Press keys "0" and "1" for address word "Engine Electronics", press keys "1" and "5" for
"Readiness code" and enter by pressing "Q" key. Read Readiness Code. See Fig. 6 . Readiness Code should
display -0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0-. If readiness code does not display as specified, press right arrow key and generate
Readiness Code. See GENERATING READINESS CODE . If Readiness Code displays as specified,
Readiness Code diagnostics are complete and no further Readiness Code diagnostics are necessary, press keys
"0" and "6" for function "End Output" and enter by pressing "Q" key.

Test Requirements For Generating Readiness Code

Ensure throttle valve is not damaged or dirty. Throttle valve angle must be less than 10 degrees. Ensure all fuses
are okay, battery voltage is at least 11.5 volts and fuel pump relay is okay. Ensure all electrical accessories are
off and A/C is off. Ensure engine is mechanically sound. Ensure no intake or exhaust system leaks exist. Ensure
engine coolant temperature is at least 176°F (80°C). On vehicles with M/T, gear shifter must be in neutral with
parking brake set. On vehicles with A/T, selector lever must be in park or neutral with parking brake set.

Generating Readiness Code - Ways To Generate Readiness Code

There are two ways to generate Readiness Code:

1. By performing a five minute test drive. Coolant temperature needs to be greater than 176° F (80° C). Idle

for three minutes (do not touch accelerator pedal). Test drive for ten minuetes. Partial throttle, full throttle
and overdrive must all be attained several times. During test drive, apply full throttle until engine speed
exceeds 3500 RPM.

2. Idle for three minutes (do not touch accelerator pedal). Test drive for ten minuetes. Partial throttle, full

throttle and overdrive must all be attained several times. During test drive, apply full throttle until engine
speed exceeds 3500 RPM.

3. This initiates necessary relevant exhaust emission diagnostics. Readiness Code is then generated when

ECM verifies readiness of tested exhaust emission components (Readiness Code is generated at regular
intervals during normal driving). Read readiness code. See READING READINESS CODE . If
Readiness Code displays -0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0-, Readiness Code was generated on test drive and no further
Readiness Code diagnostics are necessary.

needs to be greater than 176° F (80° C). Idle, partial throttle, full throttle and
overdrive, must all be attained several times. During test drive, apply full
throttle until engine speed exceeds 3500 RPM. OBD system checks components
and generates Readiness Code at regular intervals during normal driving. See
GENERATING READINESS CODE . Readiness code is erased if DTC memory is
erased or voltage supply to ECM is lost.

1. By performing a long road test. Coolant temperature needs to be greater than 176° F (80° C). Idle, partial

throttle, full throttle and overdrive, must all be attained several times.

2. During test drive, apply full throttle until engine speed exceeds 3500 RPM. This initiates necessary

relevant exhaust emission diagnostics and Readiness Code is then generated when OBD (ECM) verifies
readiness of tested exhaust emission components. Readiness Code is generated at regular intervals during
normal driving. Read readiness code. See READING READINESS CODE . If Readiness Code displays
-0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0-, Readiness Code was generated on test drive and no further Readiness Code diagnostics
are necessary.

1. By using scan tool and following a specific Test Procedure. See GENERATING READINESS CODE -

TEST PROCEDURE .

2. By using scan tool and following manufacturer's instructions to generate Readiness Code. See

GENERATING READINESS CODE - GENERIC SCAN TOOL .

WARNING:

When working on vehicles ensure that parking brake is set and
transmission is in park (A/T) or neutral (M/T). For safety during road test,
it is advisable to have a helper operate or observe scan tool from rear
seat. If test and measuring instruments are operated from front
passenger's seat and vehicle is involved in an accident, there is a
possibility the person sitting in this seat may receive serious injuries
when air bag is deployed.

NOTE:

If ignition is turned off at any time while Generating Readiness Code, Readiness
Code will not be generated. When DTC memory is erased or ECM looses power
Readiness Code is also erased.

NOTE:

If possible it is best to warm-up vehicle by test driving. Connect scan tool to
DLC. DLC is located at left side of steering column. See Fig. 1 . During
readiness code generating procedure, if test result is indicated as "OK" after
selecting a display group, testing has already been carried out and it is okay to
proceed to next work step.
