Possible Effects 

Possible effects are various engine performance problems or engine will not start.  

Test Requirements 

Ensure battery voltage is at least 11.5 volts, A/C is off, and all accessories are off.  

Test Procedures 

Check ECM ground and voltage supply. See ECM GROUND & VOLTAGE SUPPLY .  

DTC P1609/18017: CRASH SWITCH - AIR BAG 

Airbag has been deployed. Check Air Bag Control Module for DTCs. See AUTOMATIC TEST SEQUENCE 
(FUNCTION 00) 
. Repair as necessary. See appropriate AIRBAG article under RESTRAINTS.

ECM (J248) - Incorrectly Coded (No Display)  

NOTE:

For connector terminal wire colors, see appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under 
ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. For component 
locations, see COMPONENT LOCATIONS . 

NOTE:

Before replacing any component, ensure all connectors at component and ECM 
are clean and tight. After making any repairs, disconnect ECM harness 
connector for 10 seconds, connect ECM harness connector and retest system. 
It is necessary to generate an ECM readiness code if ECM memory is cleared, 
battery voltage is disconnected or ECM is disconnected. 

NOTE:

DTC 01044 is displayed in VW factory scan tool format only. 

NOTE:

Possible Effects 

Possible effect is glow plug indictor blinks.  

Test Procedures 

After ECM Code has been entered it is activated by turning ignition on and off. To code ECM, see ENGINE 
CONTROL MODULE (J248) CODING

DTC P1616/18024 & DTC P1617/18025 

Code Definition 

DTC P1616/18024 
Glow Plug Indicator Lamp (K29) - Short To B+ 

DTC P1617/18025 
Glow Plug Indicator Lamp (K29) - Open Circuit/Short To Ground  

Possible Effects 

Possible effects are indicator light not working or on continuously.  

Test Procedures 

1. Check glow plug indicator lamp using Output Diagnostic Test Mode. See OUTPUT DIAGNOSTIC 

TEST MODE . Glow plug indicator lamp should flash. If glow plug indicator lamp does not flash, go to 
next step. If glow plug indicator lamp flashes, erase DTC memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC 
TROUBLE CODES (FUNCTION 05) 
under SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Perform ECM relearn 
procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE . If no DTC resets, test is complete.  

2. Check bulb and wiring. See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in 

are clean and tight. After making any repairs, disconnect ECM harness 
connector for 10 seconds, connect ECM harness connector and retest system. 
It is necessary to generate an ECM readiness code if ECM memory is cleared, 
battery voltage is disconnected or ECM is disconnected.

Possible effects are various engine/A/T performance problems. No electronic ABS control.  

Test Procedures (With A/T) 

1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Connect VAG 1598/31 test box to ECM. See 

CONNECTING VAG TEST BOX (leave ECM harness connectors disconnected).  

NOTE:

For connector terminal wire colors, see appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under 
ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. For component 
locations, see COMPONENT LOCATIONS . 

NOTE:

Before replacing any component, ensure all connectors at component and ECM 
are clean and tight. After making any repairs, disconnect ECM harness

2. Measure resistance between test box socket No. 6 and test box socket No. 7. Resistance should be 60 to 

72 ohms. If resistance is okay go to next step. If resistance is not okay, replace faulty ECM (J248). After 
repairs, erase DTC memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (FUNCTION 05) 
under SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Verify repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure. 
See TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE .  

3. Check wiring for Drive Train CAN-Bus. See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under ENGINE 

PERFORMANCE and COMPUTER DATA LINES in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. Also see Fig. 
40
 -Fig. 42 . If wiring is okay, go to next step. If wiring is not okay, repair as necessary. After repairs, 
erase DTC memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (FUNCTION 05) under 
SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Verify repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See 
TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE .  

4. Check ABS Control Module (J104) and Automatic Transmission Control Module using Automatic Test 

Sequence. See AUTOMATIC TEST SEQUENCE (FUNCTION 00) . Repair or replace as necessary. 
After repairs, erase DTC memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES 
(FUNCTION 05) 
under SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Verify repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM 
relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE
