DTC P0571/16955 & VAG DTC 00741

Code Definition

DTC P0571/16955
Brake Light Switch - Implausible Signal

VAG DTC 00741

Brake Pedal Monitoring - Implausible Signal

Possible Effects

Possible effects are incorrect engine speed regulation. ECM requires signals from brake light switch and also
the brake pedal switch to regulate engine speed.

Test Procedures

1. Ensure battery is okay. Ensure all fuses are okay, battery voltage is at least 11.5 volts and fuel pump relay

is okay. Ensure all electrical accessories are off and A/C is off.

2. Turn ignition on, engine off. Connect scan tool, see Fig. 1 . Press keys "0" and "1" for address word

"Engine Electronics".

3. Press "right arrow" key, press keys "0" and "8" for "Read measured value block" and enter by pressing

"Q" key. Press keys "0", "0" and "6" for display group "6" and enter by pressing "Q" key. "Display field
"2" should read "000". Depress brake pedal slowly "Display field 2" should read "011", 00s should have
switched to 11s at same instance off time. Release brake pedal slowly to rest position. "Display field "2"
should read "000". Press "right arrow" key. Press keys "0" and "6" for function "End output", and enter
by pressing "Q" key. If "Display field "2" readings are not okay, go to next step. If "Display field "2"
readings are okay Erase DTC memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
(FUNCTION 05)
under SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See TEST
DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE
. Test is complete if no DTCs reset.

4. Remove driver's side knee bolster. Disconnect brake light switch/brake pedal switch 4-pin harness

connector. See Fig. 27 .

NOTE:

DTC 00741 is displayed in VW factory scan tool format only.

NOTE:

For connector terminal wire colors, see appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under
ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. For component
locations, see COMPONENT LOCATIONS .

NOTE:

Before replacing any component, ensure all connectors at component and ECM
are clean and tight. After making any repairs, disconnect ECM harness
connector for 10 seconds, connect ECM harness connector and retest system.
It is necessary to generate an ECM readiness code if ECM memory is cleared,
battery voltage is disconnected or ECM is disconnected.

5. Using DVOM, measure resistance between brake light switch/brake pedal switch terminals No. 1 and 4

(component side). Resistance should be infinity. If resistance is as specified, leave DVOM connected and
go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace or adjust brake light/brake pedal switch as
necessary. After repairs, erase DTC memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
(FUNCTION 05)
under SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Verify repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM
relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE .

6. Depress brake pedal. Resistance should be maximum 1.5 ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next

step. If resistance is not as specified, replace or adjust brake light/brake pedal switch as necessary. After
repairs, erase DTC memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (FUNCTION 05)
under SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Verify repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure.
See TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE .

7. Using DVOM, measure resistance between brake light switch/brake pedal switch terminals No. 2 and 3.

Resistance should be maximum 1.5 ohms. If resistance is as specified, leave DVOM connected and go to
next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace or adjust brake light/brake pedal switch as necessary.
After repairs, erase DTC memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
(FUNCTION 05)
under SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Verify repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM
relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE .

8. Depress accelerator pedal. Resistance should be infinity. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If

resistance is not as specified, replace or adjust brake light/brake pedal switch as necessary. After repairs,
erase DTC memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (FUNCTION 05) under
SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Verify repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See
TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE .

9. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, check voltage at brake light switch/brake pedal switch harness connector

terminal No. 1 and ground. See Fig. 28 . Check voltage at harness connector terminal No. 2 and ground.
Minimum of 11.5 volts should be present. If both test are okay, go to step 13 . If one or both tests are not
okay, go to next step.

10. Check for open or short to ground in brake light/brake pedal harness connector No. 1 and Main fuse. See

ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. If problem is
found, repair as necessary. After repairs, erase DTC memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC
TROUBLE CODES (FUNCTION 05)
under SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Verify repair. Test is
complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE .

11. Disconnect Engine Control Module (ECM) harness connectors. ECM is located in left rear corner of

engine compartment, in electronics box. Connect VAG 1598/31 test box to ECM harness connector,
CONNECTING VAG TEST BOX (leave ECM disconnected).

12. Check for open, short to voltage or short to ground between specified terminals. See CHECKING

BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH/BRAKE PEDAL SWITCH CIRCUITS table. See Fig. 28 .

13.

If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repairs, erase DTC memory. See CLEARING
DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (FUNCTION 05)
under SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Verify
repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN
PROCEDURE

CHECKING BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH/BRAKE PEDAL SWITCH CIRCUITS

NOTE:

Test box socket numbers correspond to ECM pin numbers.
