4. After installing ECM perform following procedures: 

z

Code ECM, see ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (J248) CODING .  

z

Use scan tool to check DTC memory, erase if necessary. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC 
TROUBLE CODES (FUNCTION 05) 
.  

z

Adapt ECM to Ignition key immobilize.  

z

Generate ECM readiness code. See READINESS CODE .  

ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (J248) CODING 

If ECM is replaced or incorrect ECM coding is displayed on scan tool, ECM needs to be coded. If new ECM is 
not properly coded, the following problems may occur:  

z

Driveability problems (e.g., harsh shifting).  

z

False malfunctions stored in ECM memory.  

z

Increased fuel consumption.  

z

Increased exhaust emissions.  

z

Reduction in transmission life.  

z

All ECM functions are not carried out (e.g. EVAP system operation).  

z

On front wheel drive vehicles with anti-slip regulation (ASR), ASR warning lamp comes on.  

Generic Scan Tool 

Turn ignition on, engine off. Follow scan tool manufacturer's instructions to code Engine Control Module 
(ECM). For coding options, see ECM CODING OPTIONS table.  

Scan Tool VAG 1551/1552 Or VAS 5051/5052 

1. Connect scan tool to DLC. See Fig. 1 . Press "1" key, selecting Rapid data transfer. Press keys "0" and 

"1" for "Engine electronics" and enter by pressing "Q" key. Print or record code coding information from 
Engine Control Module (ECM - J248) that is to be replaced.  

2. Leave scan tool in mode "0" and "1" for address word "Engine Electronics", press keys "0" and "7" for 

function "Code Control Module" and enter by pressing "Q" key. Enter appropriate code number for this 
vehicle. See ECM CODING OPTIONS table. Enter by pressing Q key.  

3. ECM identification and coding should display on scan tool. Verify that correct code number has been 

entered. Press right arrow key. Press keys "0" and "6" for function "End Output" and enter by pressing Q 
key. Turn ignition off to permanently store code number, turn ignition on. If "Function is unknown or 

NOTE:

Before disconnecting Engine Control Module (ECM) record code and 
identification number from ECM that is to be replaced. 

NOTE:

After coding ECM and starting engine for first time, allow engine to idle for 
several minutes so ECM can go through its learn function. Idle speed may be 
erratic while ECM is learning.

code number and enter correct code number.  

4. After coding ECM and starting engine for first time, allow engine to idle for several minutes so ECM can 

go through learn function. Idle speed may be erratic while ECM is learning. Road test vehicle. See TEST 
DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE 
. Read Readiness Code and generate Readiness Code if necessary. 
See READINESS CODE .  

ECM (248) CODING OPTIONS 

ACTIVATING/DEACTIVATING CRUISE CONTROL 

Generic Scan Tool 

Connect scan tool to DLC. DLC is located at left side of steering column. See Fig. 1 . Turn ignition on, engine 
off. Follow scan tool manufacturer's instructions to Activating/Deactivating Cruise Control.  

Scan Tool VAG 1551/1552 Or VAS 5051/5052 

Activating Cruise Control 
Connect scan tool to DLC. DLC is located at left side of steering column. See Fig. 1 . Turn ignition on, 
engine off. Press keys "0" and "1" for address word "Engine Electronics". Press "1" key 2 times for 
"Login Procedure" function 11 and enter by pressing "Q" key. Press keys "1", "1", "4", "6" and "3" for 
Code Number 11463 and enter by pressing "Q" key. Turn ignition off. Activation is complete. 

Deactivating Cruise Control 
Connect scan tool to DLC. DLC is located at left side of steering column. See Fig. 1 . Turn ignition on, 
with engine off. Press keys "0" and "1" for address word "Engine Electronics". Press "1" key 2 times for 
"Login Procedure" function 11 and enter by pressing "Q" key. Press keys "1", "6", "1", "6" and "7" for 
Code Number 16167 and enter by pressing "Q" key. Turn ignition off. Deactivation is complete.

DRIVE CYCLES 

For Test Drive Relearn Procedure and Readiness Code, see TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE and 
READINESS CODE . If emission related repairs have been performed or vehicle is to be smog checked, it is 
recommended that readiness code be read and readiness code be generated if necessary. See READINESS 
CODE 
.  

Warm-Up Phase: Engine started with coolant temperature below 122°F (50°C), then switched off at 
above 162°F (72°C).  

Road Test: Coolant temperature needs to be greater than 176°F (80°C). Idle, partial throttle, full throttle 
and overdrive must all be attained several times. During test drive, apply full throttle until engine speed 
exceeds 3500 RPM.  

CONNECTING VAG TEST BOX 

BEETLE 

Turn ignition off. Move center dash panel forward and up. Remove center dash panel. Remove screw for left 
front dash cover. See Fig. 4 . Lift cover at right side and pull to right to remove. Connect test equipment. See 
Fig. 5 .  

CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, radio will go into anti-theft protection 

mode. Obtain radio anti-theft protection code from owner prior to 
servicing vehicle.
