4. After installing ECM perform following procedures: z Code ECM, see ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (J248) CODING . z Use scan tool to check DTC memory, erase if necessary. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC z Adapt ECM to Ignition key immobilize. z Generate ECM readiness code. See READINESS CODE . ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (J248) CODING If ECM is replaced or incorrect ECM coding is displayed on scan tool, ECM needs to be coded. If new ECM is z Driveability problems (e.g., harsh shifting). z False malfunctions stored in ECM memory. z Increased fuel consumption. z Increased exhaust emissions. z Reduction in transmission life. z All ECM functions are not carried out (e.g. EVAP system operation). z On front wheel drive vehicles with anti-slip regulation (ASR), ASR warning lamp comes on. Generic Scan Tool Turn ignition on, engine off. Follow scan tool manufacturer's instructions to code Engine Control Module Scan Tool VAG 1551/1552 Or VAS 5051/5052 1. Connect scan tool to DLC. See Fig. 1 . Press "1" key, selecting Rapid data transfer. Press keys "0" and "1" for "Engine electronics" and enter by pressing "Q" key. Print or record code coding information from 2.
