z

Check wiring from Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- to CCS operating switch for
open/short circuits:

z

Check DTC Memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then Erase DTC Memory, see DTC
MEMORY OF MOTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) -J220-, CHECKING AND
ERASING
 .

z

Read readiness code, see READINESS CODE, DISPLAYING . If DTC memory has been erased or
Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was disconnected from battery positive, readiness code
must be generated again, see READINESS CODE, GENERATING .

CAN-bus, checking

Function

The Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) - J220- communicates with all data -bus capable control modules
via a CAN -bus.

The data-bus capable control modules are connected and exchange information (messages) via two data -bus
wires (CAN -High and CAN-Low) that are twisted to each other. Missing information on the data-bus is
recognized as a malfunction by the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- as well as by other CAN-
bus control modules.

The data-bus requires an adapting resistor to function fault-free. This central adapting resistor is located in the
Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-.

Diagnosis via the CAN-bus wire is undertaken via the diagnostic interface for data -bus -J533- in the
"Gateway".

See DATA BUS ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC INTERFACE -J533- "GATEWAY"

Further information:

See Self Study Program "The CAN data bus".

z

Air conditioner must be switched off

z

Selector lever of the automatic transmission must be in "P" or "N" position

Test sequence

z

Switch off ignition.

z

Unlock Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) - J220- connector and disconnect it.

z

Connect VAG 1598/31 test box to Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-. Control module
wiring harness is not connected by this action.

z

Check centralized adapting resistor in Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- by performing a
resistance measurement between test box

Sockets 58 + 60

Specification: 60 to 72

If the resistance value is outside the specified range:

z

Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-, see MOTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL
MODULE (ECM) - J220-, REPLACING
 .

If the resistance value is within the specified range:

z

Check CAN-Bus wiring using Electrical Wiring Diagram.
