Remove protective cover for right side inner constant velocity joint from engine.  

z

Remove right side axle shaft and disconnect left-hand drive shaft at transmission: 

See FRONT AXLE SHAFT . 

z

Remove front exhaust pipe. See EXHAUST MANIFOLD, FRONT EXHAUST PIPE AND 
CATALYTIC CONVERTER WITH ATTACHMENTS
 .  

z

Disconnect connection for oxygen sensor before catalytic converter (under vehicle floor).  

z

Remove oil sump protection. See Fig. 138 .  

z

Insert engine bracket T 10012 in engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A.  

z

Remove bracket on cylinder block for lower coolant hose. Threaded hole is required to secure engine 
bracket T10012.

Secure engine bracket T10012 to front of cylinder block with securing bolt M10 x 25/ 8.8 to 40 N.m.

Tighten securing nut on exhaust side hand tight.  

z

Lift engine and transmission lightly using engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A.  

z

Unbolt engine side of assembly mounting from engine carrier at top (arrows).

Unbolt transmission side of assembly mounting from top of transmission carrier (arrows). 

NOTE:

Use ladder VAS 5085 to remove securing bolts.

Carefully lower engine with transmission.  

z

While lowering engine guide power steering pressure line past transmission. 

Engine, mounting on assembly stand 

When working on the engine, it should be secured to the assembly stand support clamp VW 313 using the 
engine and transmission bracket VW 540 and supplementary set VW 540/1B. 

Work sequence 

NOTE:

Engine and transmission must be guided carefully when lowering to 
prevent damage to the bodywork, hoses and wiring.
