5-26 FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY August 2008 Special Operations Forces Reference Manual Normal special operations mission planning- c. to-execution cycle covers 72 hours, but may be shortened due to specific mission constraints. Normal tactical mission planning-to-execu- tion cycle is approximately 24 hours. AC-130 performance is marginal at altitudes d. above 15,000 feet MSL due to high gross weights and performance limitations. AC-130 operations from forward operating e. bases with high field elevations and/or high- density altitudes require analysis by gunship planners for mission limitations. Limited number of aircraft and single home f. operating location make concealed deploy- ment difficult. Large crews and extensive support package g. contribute to significant mission signature. Unimproved airfields are not acceptable due to high gross weights, performance limitations, and sensitive avionics. Gunship weapons have no hard kill capability h. against heavy or reactive armor, reinforced bunkers, etc. Aircrew Mission crew size on both gunship models is 13 per- sonnel. The augmented crew size is 18 (17 AC-130U) personnel. Basic mission crew consists of the pilot, copilot, navigator, fire control officer , electronic warfare officer , engineer, loadmaster, TV sensor operator, infrared sensor operator, and four gun- ners. Selected crews are qualified in NVG low-level missions. Crew rest: 12 hours a. Tactical crew duty day: 12 hours (16 hours b. total). Augmented crew: 16 hours (18 hours total). Crew complement may vary depending on the c. mission type and duty day. Crew requirements for ferrying are less. Minimum tactical crew: 13 d. Maximum crew: 21. e. Time on Station Unless continuous surveillance is required, a. the AC-130 holds outside the target area to limit exposure of the aircraft and the ground party. Vulnerability increases with time spent b. over target, as the element of surprise is lost and chance for acquisition by the enemy increases. Normal mission profile planning times: take- c. off/sensor alignment: 0.5 hr; en route time and time over target (TOT), including RTB: 4.0 hrs; descent and landing: 0.5 hr. Weather Capability Gunships have a limited capability to deliver fire- power under conditions of low ceilings and/or poor visibility. The APQ-180 strike radar gives the AC- 130U a good capability against radar significant targets, including those marked by beacon. This enables the AC-130U to have the capability to shoot through clouds. For beacon offsets with either air- craft, a ground controller must be present to cor- rect the gunship’s ordnance for target, range, and magnetic bearing from the location of the beacon. The systems tend to be more accurate with shorter offset distances. Mission Briefing Requirements Friendly Location. a.
