ETS1 was founded in 1947 when the American Council on Education, the Carnegie
Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the College Entrance
Examination Board contributed their testing programs, a portion of their assets and
a number of key employees to form an independent nonprofit organization under
the leadership of Henry Chauncey.
In creating ETS, our founders brought to life a concept proposed a decade earlier
by Harvard University President James Conant. Conant's belief was that a single
organization devoted to educational research and assessment could make
fundamental contributions to the progress of education in the United States.
At nonprofit ETS, we advance quality and equity in education for people
worldwide by creating assessments based on rigorous research.
ETS develops, administers and scores more than 50 million tests annually —
including the TOEFL® and TOEIC® tests, the GRE® General and Subject Tests
and The Praxis Series™ assessments — in more than 180 countries, at more than
9,000 locations worldwide.
In addition to assessments, we conduct educational research, analysis and policy
studies and develop a variety of customized services and products for teacher
certification, English language learning and elementary, secondary and
postsecondary education.

In the beginning, there was no SAT2. Students frolicked in their high school
paradise without knowledge of evil.
But then the Serpent silently slithered into the high school through the hot lunch
loading dock. He was the most nefarious, loathsome, malevolent, malicious,
odious, insidious, cunning, beguiling, deceitful serpent who ever existed. It was
because of this serpent that high school students have to learn vocabulary words

like the ones in the previous sentence. This was the Evil Testing Serpent (ETS).
The ETS, an unfathomably long, mighty, mucus-encrusted beastie, was determined
to bring evil and pain into the paradise. So he devised a plan that would put an end
to the happiness of high school students.
This is how his plan worked. For three hours students would have to answer an
incessant string of multiple choice questions. The questions would be boring and
tricky. Students who gave too many wrong answers would have miserable futures
and then die. He called this hideous ordeal the Slimy and Atrocious Torture (SAT).
The ETS inflicted his SAT upon the oppressed masses of students for many years,
and the serpent’s power increased as he drained their meager life forces. Gradually,
all resistance was crushed and the tormented youth became accustomed to taking
the SAT. Parents and teachers began to view the SAT as a national institution.
Long, bleak years of misery appeared to lie ahead for civilization.
1. The ETS is an organization which is not maintained for the purpose of
making profit.
2. Letter “E” in “ETS” stands for “evaluation”.
3. The goal of the ETS is to improve education in the USA.
4. The ETS is perceived as an enemy of American high school students.
5. Students’ parents see the SAT as nationally accepted and established
procedure.
6. The ETS plays an important role in American education.
7. The SAT is produced by the ETS.
8. The SAT was created by James Connant.
9. The ETS operates internationally.
10.The life of American high-school students became miserable with the
introduction of the SAT.
11.The SAT lasts three hours.
12.The SAT will soon be abolished.
13.The ETS is actively involved into educational studies.
14.Teachers are not satisfied with the SAT.
15.The ETS also produces materials for primary education.

Books are dead. Long live books!
My friend Tommy predicts that children born now will grow up with the same
attitude towards printed paper books that I, having been born in the 80s, have
towards vinyl records.
This prediction invariably causes our bibliophile friends to clutch their dead
trees close to their chest, screaming “no, that could never happen,” and
retreat into the stacks of books. As though the digital book revolution might
bring with it some sort of mass burning. But friends (Romans, countrymen),
I’ve had my e-book reader for just over four months now. I have seen the
future and I welcome our new e-paper overlords with open arms.

Task 2
Read the text ‘Crop Circles’, then listen to part of the lecture on the same topic.
You will notice that some ideas coincide and some differ in them. Answer
questions 16-25 by choosing A if the idea is expressed in both materials, B if it can
be found only in the reading text, C if it can be found only in the audio-recording,
and D if neither of the materials expresses the idea.
Now you have 7 minutes to read the text.
Crop Circles
Crop circles (round shapes in the fields seen from above) are not a modern
phenomenon. As early as the late 17th century, circular designs were found in the
fields and recorded in academic texts. However, the large number of eyewitness
reports from England to Australia since 1970 has encouraged a more thorough
examination of this phenomenon. To date, reports of more than 10,000 crop circles
from almost thirty countries have been collected. Within the past thirty years, the
designs have increased in complexity, including rings, lines and geometrical
figures.
One of the problems associated with a serious scientific study of crop circles

is the large number of hoaxers who have been discovered or who have admitted to
having been a part of elaborate deceptions. Besides the famous team of Doug and
Dave, who were attributed with creating a large number of circles in Britain,
groups in New Zealand and in North America have been identified. Apparently,
they flattened the crops by tromping through the field with heavy boots or by
fastening planks of wood onto their boots to create intricate patterns without
making footprints. In several experiments, most notably the 1998 demonstration
supported by the Discovery Channel, a group of trained circle makers was paid to
create patterns. The Discovery Channel test in New Zealand was mounted to prove
that it was possible for teams to create patterns in a relatively short period of time.
In less than four hours, they were able to make 100 circles intersecting in a pattern
thirty feet in diameter. Critics pointed out that the location lent itself to secrecy,
unlike other more populated sites where circles had been discovered. They also
criticised the demonstration because, although the team worked at night, the area
was very well-lighted.
Now listen to part of the lecture on the same topic and then do the task
(questions 16-25), comparing the text above and the lecture. You will hear the
lecture twice.
16. Scientists have taken serious interest in the phenomenon called ‘crop circles’.
17. Crop circles are, in fact, geometrical figures of various designs and complexity.
18. Many people have been identified who participated in deception groups
deliberately creating crop circles.
19. Several experiments have been conducted aimed at reproducing the procedure
of making crop circles by specially trained people.
20. The more time the experiment takes, the greater the circle diameter is.
21. Professor Gerald Hawkins was actively involved in creating the equilateral
pattern in a barley field in Britain.
22. There is a theory that links sound vibration frequencies with geometrical forms.
23. Observations of crop circles show that plant stems are not broken but bent.
24. Laboratory experiments show that the plants subjected to infrasound mature
and ripen faster than in normal conditions.
25. Eyewitnesses have reported that they saw steam coming out of the newly
created circle.

Task 3
Read the text ‘Is Photography Art?’ and answer questions 26-40 below.
Is Photography Art?
This may seem a pointless question today. Surrounded as we are by
thousands of photographs, most of us take for granted that, in addition to supplying
information and seducing customers, camera images also serve as decoration,
afford spiritual enrichment, and provide significant insights into the passing scene.
But in the decades following the discovery of photography, this question reflected
the search for ways to fit the mechanical medium into the traditional schemes of
artistic expression.
Discussion of the role of photography in art was especially spirited in
France, where the internal policies of the time had created a large pool of artists,
but it was also taken up by important voices in England. In both countries, public
interest in this topic was a reflection of the belief that national stature and
achievement in the arts were related.
From the maze of conflicting statements and heated articles on the subject,
three main positions about the potential of camera art emerged. The simplest,
entertained by many painters and a section of the public, was that photographs
should not be considered ‘art’ because they were made with a mechanical device
and by physical and chemical phenomena instead of human hand and spirit; to
some, camera images seemed to have more in common with fabric produced by
machinery in a mill than with handmade creations fired by inspiration. The second
widely held view, shared by painters, some photographers, and some critics, was
that photographs would be useful to art but should not be considered equal in
creativity to drawing and painting. Lastly, by assuming that the process was
comparable to other techniques such as etching and lithography, a fair number of
individuals realised that camera images were or could be as significant as
handmade works of art and that they might have a positive influence on the arts

and on culture in general.
Artists reacted to photography in various ways. Many portrait painters -
miniaturists in particular became involved with paper photography in an effort to
save their careers; some incorporated it with painting while others renounced
painting altogether. Still other painters, the most prominent among them the French
painter, Jean-August-Dominique Ingres, began almost immediately to use
photography to make a record of their own output and also to provide themselves
with source material for poses and backgrounds, vigorously denying at the same
time its influence on their vision or its claims as art.
The view that photographs might be worthwhile to artists was formulated in
considerable detail by Jacques Lacan and Francis Wey. The latter, an art and
literary critic, who eventually recognised that camera images could be inspired as
well as informative, suggested that they would lead to greater naturalness in the
graphic depiction of anatomy, clothing, likeness, expression, and landscape. By
studying photographs, true artists, he claimed, would be relieved of mental tasks
and become free to devote themselves to the more important spiritual aspects of
their work. Wey left unstated what the incompetent artist might do as аn
alternative, but according to the influential French critic and poet Charles
Baudelaire, writing in response to an exhibition of photography in 1859, lazy and
untalented painters would bеcоmе photographers. Fired by а belief in art as an
imaginative embodiment of cultivated ideas and dreams, Baudelaire regarded
photography as 'а very humble servant of art and science'; а medium largely unable
to transcend 'external reality'. For this critic, photography was linked with 'the
great industrial madness' of the time, which in his eyes exercised disastrous
consequences оn the spiritual qualities of life and art.
Eugene Delacroix was the most prominent of the French artists who
welcomed photography as a help-mate but recognised its limitations. Regretting
that 'such а wonderful invention' had arrived so late in his lifetime, he still took
lessons in photography, and both commissioned and collected photographs.
Delacroix's enthusiasm for the medium can be sensed in а journal entry noting that
if photographs were used as they should be, аn artist might 'raise himself to heights

that we do not yet know'.
The question of whether the photograph was document or art aroused
interest in England also. The most important statement оn this matter was an
unsigned article that concluded that while photography had а role to play, it should
not bе ‘constrained’ into ‘competition’ with art; а more stringent viewpoint led
critic Philip Gilbert Hamerton to dismiss camera images as 'narrow in range,
emphatic in assertion, telling one truth for ten falsehoods’.
These writers reflected the opposition of а section of the cultural elite in
England and France to the ‘cheapening of art’ which the growing acceptance and
purchase of camera pictures by the middle class represented. Technology made
photographic images а common sight in the shop windows of Regent Street and
Piccadilly in London and the commercial boulevards of Paris.

Task 1
For items 1-15 fill in the gaps in the text choosing an appropriate word from the column on the right. Choose
one word once only. There are two extra words in the right column which you don’t have to choose. Write
the correct word in your answer sheet.
Why you should never, ever wash your jeans

What do winners smell like? Dirty jeans - or so say some manufacturers of raw denim

who claim that not washing your jeans will make them last 1)__. But what on earth do
you do when nobody wants to come near you anymore?

His solution was to develop Mr Black’s Denim Refresh - an “anti-bacterial, odour

Task 1
Listening comprehension.
For items 1-15 listen to a passage from an audio guide and decide whether the
statements (1-15) are TRUE (A), or FALSE (B) according to text you hear. You
will hear the text twice.
Now you have 30 seconds to look through the statements.
(pause 30 seconds)
Now we begin.
Rick: Thanks for joining me on a guided walk through the best collection
anywhere of books, maps, scriptures, and historical letters. These national archives
of Britain include more than 12 million books, 180 miles of shelving and the
deepest basement in London… But everything that matters for our visit is in one
delightful room where the most important documents are on display. Start with
these top stops then stray according to your interests. Allow yourself an hour to do
justice to this audio tour. We’ll stand before ancient Bibles, the works of
Shakespeare, highlights of English Lit 101, the Magna Carta, and—ladies and
gentlemen—the Beatles.
Now let’s enter the British Library and get started. Lisa, take us in…
Lisa: Thanks, Rick.
Rick: The tour begins.
Lisa: In the courtyard, outside the entrance, you'll see a big statue. It depicts a
naked Isaac Newton, bending forward with the compass to measure the universe.
Rick: This naked Newton symbolizes the library's purpose: to gather all
knowledge and promote our endless search for truth.
Lisa: Stepping inside, you'll find the information desk and other services. The
reading rooms upstairs are not open to the general public. Our tour is at the room to
the left of the lobby. It's labeled “The treasures of the British library” or the Sir
John Ritblat gallery. Climb the small set of stairs to the gallery. This priceless
collection is all in one large carefully designed room. Enter and let your eyes
adjust. The room is dimly lit to preserve the artifacts. Display cases are grouped
according to themes: maps to your left, sacred texts straight ahead, music to your
right and so on. Focus on the big picture. And don't be too worried about locating
every specific exhibit in this tour. Now let's begin.
Start with the wall of maps on your left. Rick, I turn the navigation over to you.
Rick: Affirmative, Lisa.
Maps. The historic maps show how humankind's perspective of the world has
expanded over the centuries. These pieces of paper encoded with information
gleaned from travelers could be passed along to future generations. Each
generation built upon the knowledge of the last. For example, a crude centuries’
old map of the Island of Britain put medieval man in an unusual position, looking
down on his homeland from high above. Within a few centuries maps of Britain
were of such high quality that could be used today to plan a vacation. Within a
century or two after Columbus, the entire globe was fairly-well mapped including
America. Well, except for the area beyond the well-mapped East coast. Out there
was the vast expansive unknown land labeled terra incognita.
Lisa: When you finish exploring the maps, move it to the area dedicated to sacred
texts.
You now have 45 seconds to mark your answers.
(pause 45 seconds)
Now listen to the text again.
Text repeated.
Now you have 45 seconds to complete the task.
Task 2
Integrated listening and reading
Read the text ‘Crop Circles’, then listen to part of the lecture on the same topic. You will notice
that some ideas coincide and some differ in them. Answer questions 16-25 by choosing A if the
idea is expressed in both materials, B if it can be found only in the reading text, C if it can be
found only in the audio-recording, and D if neither of the materials expresses the idea.
Now you have 7 minutes to read the text.
(pause 7 minutes)
Now that you have read the explanation of crop circles in the reading, listen to part of the lecture
on a similar topic. You will hear the recording twice.
Okay, let's look at the scientific data on crop circles. Serious scientists have catalogued
photographs of crop circles that are strikingly similar to computer fractals, that is, geometric
patterns that are smaller than traditional geometry, and even mirror processes in quantum
physics. And Professor Gerald Hawkins has used principles of Euclidean geometry to prove four
theorems that can be derived from the relationships of elements in crop circles, as well as an
additional fifth theorem from which he derived the other four. In spite of a challenge to the
scientific community, no one has been able to create that mysterious fifth theorem, although
Euclid alluded to it. So it was a shock when its equilateral version appeared in a barley field in
Britain.
Another interesting scientific theory also originates in ancient writing. The Egyptians referred to
geometry as frozen music, and, in fact, modern investigations of sound vibration confirm that
sound frequencies can create circles at low frequencies and more complex forms at higher
frequencies. And direct observation of the crop circles also provides some interesting data along
those lines. In most of the cases, the stems of the grain are not broken but bent. The biophysical
evidence seems to indicate that the plant's nodes have become hugely extended, the seed
embryos have been distorted, and the crystalline structure appears to have been reorganized.
Nevertheless, the plants do not appear to be damaged, and will continue to mature and ripen.
Further laboratory investigations suggest that the plants may have been subjected to a very high
intensity heat in a short burst similar to the results of infrasound, which is measured at below
twenty hertz. In experiments with infrasound, water in plant stems has come to a boil in less than
one nanosecond. This would be consistent with the reports by witnesses that the process takes
place within seconds and that there appears to be steam within the newly created crop circles. In
addition, soil samples from inside the circles themselves display characteristic crystalline
structures that would suggest their having been subjected to temperatures of almost 1500 degrees
Celcium.
You’ll hear the lecture again in 45 seconds.
(pause 45 seconds)
Now listen to the lecture again.
Text repeated
Now you have five minutes to finish the task and transfer your answers to the answer sheet.
(pause 5 minutes)
This is the end of the integrated task. Now you can start working on your reading task.

London Millennium Footbridge
(The Wobbly Bridge).
(Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince).

Мост-фонтан Банпо (the Banpo Fountain Bridge [ˌbæn ˈpəu]) —
реку Хан (the Han River

Понте-Веккьо (the Ponte Vecchio[ˈponte ˈvɛkkjo] или the Old Bridge) —
самом узком месте реки Арно (the Arno [ˈa:nəu]), почти напротив
(the Via Cassia[ˈvaiə
(«banco»),
«O mio babbino caro»,
(Giacomo Puccini [ˈʤɑ:kɔuˌməu pu:ˈʧ i:n i:]) в 1918 году.
•
Assassin's Creed II.

Виадук Мийо (the Viaduct Millau [ˈvaiəˌdʌkt mɪ ˈlɑu]), расположен во
названием Тар (the Tarn River [ta:n]), обеспечивается бесперебойное,
(Beziers
[bəˈziəz]).
George Bridge
соединяющий берега реки Сыдухэ (the Syduhe River [ˌsiˈde]).
(the Lazarc
Plateau
[leiˈza:k
ˈplætəu]).

Integrated listening and reading
Task 3
Read the text below, then listen to a part of the lecture on the same topic. You will notice that
some ideas coincide and some differ in them. Answer questions 16-25 by choosing A if the idea
is expressed in both materials, B if it can be found only in the reading text, C if it can be found
only in the audio-recording, and D if neither of the materials expresses the idea. Circle the
correct letter in your answer sheet.
Now you have 7 minutes to read the text.
The Reverend Thomas Robert Malthus was an English cleric and scholar, influential in the fields
of political economy and demography. In 1798, he published an Essay on the Principle of Population,
one of the most important but controversial works ever written on the consequences of population
growth. According to Malthus, without intervention, population will tend to exceed the supply of
food because, whereas population increases exponentially, food supplies do not. He also observed
that disasters, disease, famine, and war could have a beneficial effect on population by increasing
mortality rates, and thus slowing population growth. In addition, he pointed out that the sector of the
population at the highest standard of living tended to exercise preventive measures to control fertility,
but the sector at the lowest standard of living had the largest number of children, thereby
relinquishing any possibility of improvement in living conditions, and perhaps even serving as a
stimulus for the disease and other factors that check population growth.
Citing the fact that the wealthy and better-educated sectors of society already controlled
population, Malthus pointed out the benefits of universal education to solve the population problem.
He recommended raising the minimum wage and providing an incentive for the poor to choose
between having more children, which they could support at a low standard of living, and having
smaller families, which they could provide with a higher standard of living. Malthus believed that
the ambition to improve their standard of living would direct those at the lowest income levels to
limit the number of children they brought into the world once they understood the relationship
between their life style and the size of their family.

In spite of having a lot of followers, he remains a much-debated writer.
Now listen to a part of the lecture on the same topic and then do the tasks (questions 16-25),
comparing the text above and the lecture. You will hear the lecture twice.
16. Thomas Malthus made a significant contribution to the study of population.
17. The views of Thomas Malthus cause a lot of discussion even today.
18. The demographic transition model describes how population increases and declines in several
stages.
19. According to Thomas Malthus, natural disasters, wars and lack of food help regulate population
growth.
20. Malthus explained that low-income families had always tended to check their birth rates.
21. Malthus believed that education could play an important role in helping people realize the
connection between low standards of living and the size of their family.
22. Malthus thought that the introduction of higher wages and having smaller families could make
people more selfish.
23. Advances in medicine and food production were predicted by Malthus.
24. Population may increase even though fewer people are born.
25. To stop population growth, Japan, Europe and North America have introduced strict rules aimed
at reducing immigration inflow.

Task 4
Read the text and answer questions 26-40 below.
Australia’s Lost Giants
What happened to Australia's megafauna, the giant animals that once existed across this
enormous continent?
A In 1969, a fossil hunter named Rod Wells came to Naracoorte in South Australia to explore
what was then known as Victoria Cave. Wells clawed through narrow passages, and
eventually into a huge chamber. Its floor of red soil was littered with strange objects. It took
Wells a moment to realize what he was looking at: the bones of thousands of creatures that
must have fallen through holes in the ground above and become trapped. Some of the oldest
belonged to mammals far larger than any found today in Australia. They were the ancient
Australian megafauna - huge animals of the Pleistocene epoch. In boneyards across the
continent, scientists have found the fossils of a giant snake, a huge flightless bird, and a

seven foot kangaroo, to name but a few. Given how much ink has been spilled on the
extinction of the dinosaurs, it's a wonder that even more hasn't been devoted to megafauna.
Prehistoric humans never threw spears at Tyrannosaurus rex but really did hunt mammoths
and mastodons.
B
The disappearance of megafauna in America - mammoths, saber-toothed cats, giant sloths,
among others - happened relatively soon after the arrival of human beings, about 13,000
years ago. In the 1960s, paleoecologist Paul Martin developed what became known as the
blitzkrieg hypothesis. Modern humans, Martin said, created havoc as they spread through the
Americas, wielding spears to annihilate animals that had never faced a technological
predator. But this period of extinction wasn't comprehensive. North America kept its deer,
black bears and a small type of bison, and South America its jaguars and llamas.
C
What happened to Australia's large animals is baffling. For years scientists blamed the
extinctions on climate change. Indeed, Australia has been drying out for over a million
years, and the megafauna were faced with a continent where vegetation began to
disappear. Australian paleontologist Tim Flannery suggests that people, who arrived on
the continent around 50,000 years ago, used fire to hunt, which led to deforestation. Here's
what's certain, Flannery says. Something dramatic happened to Australia's dominant land
creatures - somewhere around 46,000 years ago, strikingly soon after the invasion of a
tool-wielding, highly intelligent predator.
In Flannery's 1994 book called The Future Eaters, he sets out his thesis that human beings
are a new kind of animal on the planet, and are in general, one prone to ruining
ecosystems. Flannery's book proved highly controversial. Some viewed it as critical of
the Aborigines, who pride themselves on living in harmony with nature. The more basic
problem with Flannery's thesis is that there is no direct evidence that they killed any
Australian megafauna. It would be helpful if someone uncovered a Diprotodon skeleton
with a spear point embedded in a rib - or perhaps Thylacoleo bones next to the charcoal of
a human campfire. Such kill sites have been found in the Americas but not in Australia.
D
The debate about megafauna pivots to a great degree on the techniques for dating old
bones and the sediments in which they are buried. If scientists can show that the
megafauna died out fairly quickly and that this extinction event happened within a few
hundred, or even a couple thousand years, of the arrival of people, that's a strong case -
even if a purely circumstantial one - that the one thing was the direct result of the other.
As it happens, there is one place where there may be such evidence: Cuddie Springs in
New South Wales. Today the person most vocal about the site is archeologist Judith
Field. In 1991, she discovered megafauna bones directly adjacent to stone tools - a
headline-making find. She says there are two layers showing the association, one about
30,000 years old, the other 35,000 years old. If that dating is accurate, it would mean
humans and megafauna coexisted in Australia for something like 20,000 years. "What
Cuddie Springs demonstrates is that you have an extended overlap of humans and
megafauna," Field says. Nonsense, say her critics. They say the fossils have been moved
from their original resting places and redeposited in younger sediments.
E Another famous boneyard in the same region is a place called Wellington Caves, where
Diprotodon, the largest known marsupial - an animal which carries its young in a pouch like
kangaroos and koalas - was first discovered. Scientist Mike Augee says that: "This is a

sacred site in Australian paleontology." Here's why: In 1830 a local official named George
Rankin lowered himself into the cave on a rope tied to a protrusion in the cave wall. The
protrusion turned out to be a bone. A surveyor named Thomas Mitchell arrived later that
year, explored the caves in the area, and shipped fossils off to Richard Owen, the British
paleontologist who later gained fame for revealing the existence of dinosaurs. Owen
recognized that the Wellington cave bones belonged to an extinct marsupial. Later,
between 1909 and 1915 sediments in Mammoth Cave that contained fossils were hauled
out and examined in a chaotic manner that no scientist today would approve. Still, one
bone in particular has drawn extensive attention: a femur with a cut in it, possibly left
there by a sharp tool.
F
Unfortunately, the Earth preserves its history haphazardly. Bones disintegrate, the land
erodes, the climate changes, forests come and go, rivers change their course - and
history, if not destroyed, is steadily concealed. By necessity, narratives are constructed
from limited data. Australia's first people expressed themselves in rock art.
Paleontologist Peter Murray has studied a rock painting in far northern Australia that
shows what looks very much like a megafauna marsupial known as Palorchestes. In
Western Australia another site shows what appears to be a hunter with either a marsupial
lion or a Tasmanian tiger - a major distinction, since the marsupial lion went extinct
and the much smaller Tasmanian tiger survived into the more recent historical era. But
as Murray says, "Every step of the way involves interpretation. The data doesn't just
speak for itself."
