'You haven't1 a real appreciation of Newspeak, Winston,' he said almost sadly. 'Even
when you write it you're still thinking in Oldspeak. I've read some of those pieces that
you write in "The Times" occasionally. They're good enough, but they're translations.
In your heart you'd prefer to stick to Oldspeak, with all its vagueness and its useless
shades of meaning. You don't grasp the beauty of the destruction of words. Do you
know that Newspeak is the only language in the world whose vocabulary gets smaller
every year?'
Winston did know that, of course. He smiled, sympathetically he hoped, not
trusting himself to speak. Syme bit off another fragment of the dark-coloured
bread, chewed it briefly, and went on:
'Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In
the end we shall make thought crime literally impossible because there will be no
words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed, will be
expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary
meanings rubbed out and forgotten. Already, in the Eleventh Edition, we're not far
from that point. But the process will still be continuing long after you and I are dead.
Every year fewer and fewer words, and the range of consciousness always a little
smaller. Even now, of course, there's no reason or excuse for committing thought-
crime. It's merely a question of self-discipline, reality- control. But in the end there
won't be any need even for that. The Revolution will be complete when the language
is perfect. Newspeak is Ingsoc and Ingsoc is Newspeak,' he added with a sort of
mystical satisfaction. 'Has it ever occurred to you, Winston, that by the year 2050, at
the very latest, not a single human being will be alive who could understand such a
conversation as we are having now?'
Task 1.
For statements 1-7, choose TRUE if the statement agrees with the information given
in the text; FALSE if the statement contradicts the information given in the text, or
NOT STATED if the information on the statement is not given in the text.

2. According to Syme, people will have to do with only six words in putting across
their ideas.
3. It was Syme’s elder brother who came up with the idea of Newspeak.
4. Winston’s articles are written in Newspeak.
5. Winston expressed his false sympathy for Syme’s ideas with a smile, as he was
afraid that words might reveal his true feelings.
6. Human consciousness will contract as there will be fewer words to think with.
7. Ingsoc is a new word in Newspeak denoting revolution.

I phoned their company, and the manager

I've just come back, and the walls are a different colour,

Read the text below and do the task after it.
The Apgar Score
A. Dr. Virginia Apgar’s work has protected babies since 1952. That’s when she
developed a scoring system that helped doctors and nurses look carefully at newborn
babies. The rating system is called the Apgar Score. With a few quick tests, doctors
know if a baby is healthy or needs medical help. Today, the Apgar Score is used
around the world. Because of Dr. Apgar’s scoring system, more people began to
study how to help newborn babies. It became a special field of medical study.
B. Virginia Apgar was born in 1909 in New Jersey. In high school, she knew she
wanted to become a doctor. Apgar attended Mount Holyoke College and graduated in
1921. She played several sports, wrote for the college newspaper, and played the
violin. She was full of energy. She once said that people in her family never sat
down. When the Great Depression happened, her family suffered money troubles.
Virginia Apgar worked several jobs to continue her education. She earned her
medical degree in 1933 from Columbia University. She was fourth in her class. In
1949, she became the first woman to be named a full professor at the medical school
there.
C. Dr. Apgar was a teacher and a researcher. She worked with mothers who were
giving birth, and with their infants. She learned to look carefully at the health of a
newborn baby in the first minutes after he or she was born. This helped Dr. Apgar to
realize that the medicine doctors gave to mothers did not help their babies. She
changed to a different medicine and published a report. The report convinced other
doctors to change, too.
D. Dr. Apgar’s scoring system for newborn babies is still used today. It gives points
for a baby’s heartbeat, breathing, muscle tone, skin color, and reflexes. If a baby’s
score is 10, the doctor knows the baby is doing fine. If the score is very low, the
doctor can give the baby proper medicine.
E. Dr. Apgar taught many new doctors, and they regarded her highly. Later in life,
she worked for the March of Dimes. She raised money to help study childhood
disabilities. Dr. Apgar wrote a book for parents, gave talks, and appeared on TV. She
died in 1974, and is remembered today as a medical pioneer and an outstanding
teacher.

READING
Time: 45 minutes (20 points)
Task 1
For items 1-10, read the passage below and choose option which best fits according
to the text.
Round the World in a Yacht
(1) Imagine, for a moment, spending the night on board a large yacht, being
roughly woken in the pitch dark and ordered on deck. Every so often you will be
totally drenched, very suddenly, in salt water. You will be sharing the same cramped
space with 14 other people for a whole year. Your stomach, when not affected by
seasickness, will be hit by the competitive tension and nervousness that afflicts all
sportspeople. You will be obliged to concentrate without cease. The slightest loss of
focus could cost someone their life.
(2) For the eight crews taking part in the Round-the-World yachting race, this
has been daily life since they left Britain eleven months ago. Now, after racing
50,000 kilometres of ocean, they are soon due home. While most of us have worked,
slept, taken a holiday, these crews have sailed and sailed, day after day, night after
night, in weather conditions that would test any human. This is the reality of ocean
yacht racing, which bears little resemblance to the popular image of sailing - the
quick sprint around a lake before returning ashore for a meal and a warm bath.
(3) Racing 20-metre yachts around the world is a story of unrelenting hard
work, pushing yourself to the limits of endurance, story of dogged determination to
go on. But it is also a story of the vastness and beauty of the sea, of seeing the sun
rise and set on hundreds of desolate horizons, and of the supreme satisfaction of
arriving somewhere knowing that wind alone has taken you there.
(4) Unlike the captains, who are professional sailors, the crews all consist of
amateur volunteers who have actually paid for the privilege of taking a year off from
their work and enduring these difficult conditions. On board the London Light the
ages range from 21 to 65. For the youngest member, Susan Porter, the trip is about
the excitement of both the racing and the elements. 'Being able to pitch yourselves as
a team against a storm gives you a huge sense of achievement,' she says.
(5) Jerry Wallace, a marketing director, found sailing a refreshing change from
the selfish individualism of business. Although he was prepared for the discomfort,
the mental stress of long-distance racing was not what he had anticipated. 'A Grand

Prix driver has a few hours of focus, a footballer 90 minutes, but we have been racing
for 11 months. This is something I didn't really appreciate before I started.'
(6) Inevitably, there are tensions. The kind of people who choose to take part in
races like this tend to be motivated and strong-willed. On a trivial level, there are the
usual arguments about things like cleaning, tidying, personal hygiene, even the way
people snore. Rows on a boat must be addressed immediately. Left to develop, they
get much worse. On the London Light they have done this by having a meeting where
problems can be discussed and resolved by majority vote. Cooperation is the key, and
everyone can have their say. The London Light is one of the few boats that has never
lost any crew early because of a personality clash.
(7) The strongest source of unrest on any boat, whether professional or
amateur, is the racing itself. Such is the issue's potential for disruption that two
captains resigned during the year because their crews were unhappy at their boat's
lack of racing success. Inevitably, some crew members want to race the boat hard.
That means that only the best sailors tend to get to actually steer the boat, which is
not satisfactory.
(8) Some crew members feel they have paid their money and should not be
excluded from any tasks on the boat. Walter Given, a retired teacher aboard the
London Light, believes the jobs around the boat should be shared out among the
crew. And if that means that some of the less competent spend time at the wheel, so
be it. 'We all could have done some more steering - that's the glamorous bit,' he says,
though this did not spoil the trip for him at all. At 65 the oldest member of the crew,
Walter feels the trip has really given him a lot more enthusiasm for life.
1. Everyday life on board during the yachting race can be described as
ordered and settled.

Task 2
For items 11-20, read the passage below and choose which of the sentences A-K fit
into the numbered gaps in the text. There is one extra sentence which does not fit in
any of the gaps.
Since the 1960s, the Moon has been seriously considered as an alternative home for
humans. For space agencies around the world, futurists, and private aerospace
companies, the idea of colonizing the Moon is not a question of “if”, but “when” and
“how”. 11 _______________. “We just need one natural disaster to bring the house
of cards down,” warns David Rothery, professor of planetary geosciences at the Open
University. 12 _______________. Before that, the Earth’s resources might deplete,
and we may need to consider extracting materials from the Moon to manufacture
goods in the Earth’s orbit.
13 _______________. There are many natural hazards that come from living on a
body like the Moon. 14 _______________. Most of the lunar surface is also exposed
to impacts from meteoroids and micrometeoroids. The Moon also has an atmosphere
that is tenuous, it is practically a vacuum. 15 _______________. It also means that
any settlements will have to be airtight, pressurized and insulated against the external
environment. 16 _______________. This includes solar radiation, which gets much
worse during a solar event, and cosmic rays. 17 _______________. Astronaut Tim
Peake, who experienced zero gravity for six months, described the feeling of
returning to earth as “the world’s worst hangover”.
Nevertheless, we must admit that having a colony on the nearest celestial body to
Earth would be particularly beneficial. 18 _______________. Besides, having a base
on the Moon would facilitate missions and colonization efforts to other planets and
moons. 19 _______________. By studying the effects of low-gravity on the human
body, astronauts will be better prepared to deal with the effects of long-duration
space travel during missions to these planets. 20 _______________.

A. However, creating an escape route is far from easy.
B. The moon also has a sixth of the Earth’s gravity, meaning our muscles and
bones would waste away.
C. To put it simply, a colony on the Moon could act as a stepping stone to Mars,
Venus, the Asteroid Belt, and beyond.
D. This is part of the reason why the Moon goes through such extremes in
temperature.
E. We would be able to conduct research, extract resources, and reap the benefits
of new technologies.
F. For some, establishing a permanent human presence on the Moon is a matter of
destiny while for others, it’s a matter of survival.
G. Since it faces away from Earth, the far side of the Moon is free from radio
interference, making it a prime location for radio telescopes.
H. These include extremes in temperature, where the Sun-facing side experiences
highs of 117 °C, while the dark side experiences lows of -43 °C.
I. The lack of an atmosphere (as well as a magnetosphere) also means that the
surface is exposed to far more radiation than what we are used to here on Earth.
J. These studies could also help pave the way towards the establishment of
colonies on these bodies.
K. It can be any major natural disaster: a volcanic eruption or a large meteorite
hitting Earth.

USE OF ENGLISH
Time: 60 minutes (45 points)
Task 1. Items 1-15 (15 points)
For Questions 1-15, read the text below and look carefully at each line. Some of the
lines are correct, and some have a word which should not be there.
If a line is correct put a tick. Use the letter "V" as a tick. If a line has a word which
should not be there, write the word in a given space. There are two examples at the
beginning (0 and 00).
THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE (G. Orwell)
0
The English language has two outstanding characteristics to which
most of its minor oddities can be finally traced. These
V
characteristics are a very large vocabulary and simplicity of
grammar.
00
English is really two languages, Anglo-Saxon and Norman-French,
and during the last three centuries it has been reinforced on an
the
enormous scale by new words deliberately created from the Latin
and Greek roots.
1
But in addition to the vocabulary is made much larger than it
appears by the practice of turning one part of speech into another.
For example, almost any noun can be used as a verb.
2
This in effect gives an extra range of verbs, so that you have knife
as well as stab, school as well as teach, fire as well as burn, and so
on.
3
Verbs can also change into nouns with a considerable freedom, and
by the use of affixes such as -y, -ful, -like, any noun can be turned
into an adjective.
More freely than in most languages, verbs and adjectives can be
4
turned into their opposites by means of the prefix un-. And
adjectives can be made more emphatic or given a new twist by tying
a noun to them; for example, lily-white, sky-blue, coal-black, iron-
hard, etc.
8
Всероссийская олимпиада школьников по английскому языку 2021-2022 уч. г.
Муниципальный этап. 9 класс
5
But English is also, and to an unnecessary extent, a borrowing
language. It readily takes over any foreign word that seems to fill in
a need, often altering the meaning.
6
English grammar is simple. The language is almost completely
uninflected one. Any regular English verb has only three
inflections, the third person singular, the present participle, and the
past participle.
7
Thus, for instance, the verb to live consists of live, lives, living,
lived, and that is all. There is, of course, a great wealth of tenses,
but these are made by the use of auxiliaries which themselves
barely inflect.
8
May, might, shall, will, should, would do not inflect at all. The main
thing is that every other person in every tense of such a verb as to
live can be expressed in only about thirty words.
9
The corresponding number in, for instance, French would be
somewhere near two hundred. And in English there is the added
advantage that the auxiliaries used to make the tenses are the same
in every case.
10
The greatest quality of English is its enormous range not only of
meaning but of tone. It is capable of endless subtleties, and of
everything from the most high-flown rhetoric across to the most
brutal coarseness.
11
It is the language of lyric poetry, and also of headlines. It is
therefore well suited to be a world lingua franca, and it has in fact
spread more widely than any other language.
12
But there are also great disadvantages, or at least great dangers, in
speaking English as one’s native tongue. To begin with, the English
are being very poor linguists.
13
Their own language is grammatically so simple that unless they
have not gone through the discipline of learning a foreign language
in childhood, they are often quite unable to grasp what is meant by
gender, person, and case.

14
Whoever writes English is involved in a struggle that never lets up
even for a sentence. They are struggling against vagueness, against
obscurity, against the encroachment of Latin and Greek, and, above
all, against the worn-out phrases and dead metaphors with which
the language is cluttered up.
15
In speaking, these dangers are more easily avoided, but spoken
English differs from written English more sharply than is the case in
most of languages.
Task 2. Items 1-10 (10 points)
For items 1-10, complete the second sentence so that it has a similar meaning to the
first sentence, using the word given. Do not change the word given. Use from three

READING
Time: 45 minutes (20 points)
Task 1
For items 1-10, read the passage below and choose the option which best fits
according to the text.
Not many people buy a kitchen before they’ve found the house to put it in, but
no one who knows designer Mairead Turner and her restaurateur husband Robin
Hodgson is surprised to hear this is what they did. When they fall in love with a
beautiful pre-loved bargain they snap it up and work out where it’s going to go later.
“I spotted these kitchen units years ago, while on one of my regular eBay
browsing binges,” says Mairead. “It was boxes of pieces from a massive free-standing
solid oak Habitat kitchen. I saw it and had to own it. I had it in storage until we finally
found a home for it here. We literally arrived with everything apart from the kitchen
sink - it didn’t come with the sink!”
When the couple landed on the Isle of Anglesey eight years ago, Mairead was
on maternity leave from her role as a producer of contemporary dance and Robin was
in the process of selling the vintage clothes shop Sugar Shack, a style landmark in
Leeds, where the pair honed their vintage buying skills. They made the move to fulfil
Robin’s dream of opening and running a chain of restaurants on the Welsh coast, with
his business partner.
So, while Robin was off venue-hunting, Mairead went searching for a home.
And she found the house in much the same way as she chances upon all of her favourite
things. “We rented while we worked out where we were going to settle. And, as I was
on maternity leave, I’d go on long walks along the coast with the baby. It was on one
of my walks that I saw this Victorian house up for sale. It’s not the prettiest of buildings,
but I knew it was the place for us. To wake up and look out over the deer park and the
sea beyond every day was like a dream come true.”
As soon as they moved in, the couple began working on making the inside of the
house as beautiful as its surroundings. “It was very old-fashioned,” explains Mairead.
“It hadn’t been touched since the 1970s, when it was extended. The first thing we did
was knock down walls in the extension to create one big living space and a final resting
place for our eBay kitchen.”
Seating that the couple have picked up on their travels is dotted all over the
house. “Most of our furniture and accessories, and even the lighting, is picked up from
antique markets, eBay, junk shops, charity shops or car boot sales. Robin tends to come
home with large, retro industrial pieces and I unearth the smaller details,” says Mairead.
“It’s obvious to anyone who steps in here that I love bold pattern, texture and
colour,” says Mairead. “I spend a lot of time working out how to balance different

colours and patterns, so that every space is joyous, but also restful. I tend to start with
an amazing patterned wallpaper that goes well with the proportions of a room and work
everything else around that.”
Mairead’s striking designs quickly won praise from visitors to her home and it
sort of caught on: from friends to friends of friends and so on. Soon people were asking
her to help them with their own schemes. “I’ve never had any formal design training,”
she admits “but I soon realised that I couldn’t continue with my job as a dance producer
while living out here and being a mum. I’ve always loved renovating houses and when
friends started asking me to help with their projects, I jumped at it and became an
interior designer by default.”
Mairead and Co Interiors is now thriving. Mairead’s unique mix of pattern and
colour can be seen in hotels, restaurants, holiday cottages and homes across Wales and
beyond, as well as Robin’s now well-established chain of restaurants, Dylan’s. No
scheme, however, is quite as daring as her own home.
“This house is like a playground for me. It’s where I take risks and experiment
with colour and pattern in ways that I never would with clients’ properties. I’ve tried
out colour-blocking with the deep plum wall and cabinet in my office, for example,
and I’ve based a scheme around a curtain fabric in our bedroom. Lockdown also gave
me time to rethink things.”
1. What do we learn about Mairead and Robin’s shopping habits?
They prefer looking for bargains online together.
They always make a shopping list to follow.

USE OF ENGLISH
Time: 60 minutes (45 points)
Task 1. Items 1-15 (15 points)
For Questions 1-15, read the text below and look carefully at each line. Some of the
lines are correct, and some have a word which should not be there.
If a line is correct put a tick. Use the letter "V" as a tick. If a line has a word which
should not be there, write the word in a given space. There are two examples at the
beginning (0 and 00).
0
In one edition of Private Eye, Britain’s most famous and
controversial satirical magazine, a cartoon appeared showing the
V
main characters from A. A. Milne’s famous books for young,
early twentieth-century middle-class children.
00
But in the cartoon, Christopher Robin, Pooh, Tigger, and Piglet
of
were all of wearing hooded jackets and one of them was saying
1
‘Let’s go and hang about on the footbridge’.
The joke in the cartoon intentionally mixed all up a safe, childlike,
2
rural world
(the characters from Milne’s books and the
footbridge) and the supposedly dangerous world of urban youth
(their hoods and the suggestion to hang about).
The cartoon was an allusion to what became a hot topic in the
3
British media in that year - teenage yobs hanging around in public
places. And a yob could be identified, it seemed, by his hood.
4
A yob is a far rude, noisy and sometimes aggressive and violent
boy or young man.
5
It all sparked into life when the well-known Bluewater shopping
complex (to the south-east of London) banned the wearing of
hoods on its premises.
6
Apparently, the public was being intimidated by them.
Middle England was in a panic over the menace of the hooded
7
underwolves.

With the help of this neologism underwolves (that is, a word
8
which the writer has invented and you cannot find in a dictionary)
the author intends to depict an image of poor and untrustworthy
people and also dangerous such like wolves.
9
Not a day went by without some shocking story in the press about
the bad behaviour of ‘hoodies’, as they were called.
10
Even the Prime Minister indicated so mild approval for the
Bluewater ban.
11
It was at this time that the term ASBO (Anti-Social Behaviour
Order, which legally bans a person out from certain areas) became
part of the everyday British lexicon.
But there was also a backlash against this perception of young
12
people.
13
The government was accused of making up scapegoats of the
boys in the hoods.
And Private Eye had lots of fun out of the situation, with mock
14
headlines such as
‘Sheriff of Nottingham to outlaw Robin
Hoodie’.
15
Naturally, the author intended to make pun on the meaning of
hoodie.
Task 2. Items 1-10 (10 points)
For items 1-10, complete the second sentence so that it has a similar meaning to the
first sentence, using the word given. Do not change the word given. Use from three to
five words. The number of words is specified in the brackets. Do not use short forms.
Please mind both grammar and spelling. There is an example at the beginning (0).

But there was a reason for this (2) public relations campaign.

In Britain there are two kinds of lawyers: solicitors and barristers.
