Platform Signage
4.1
“A” Sign Types
Platform Signs
Signs for the Amtrak Graphics Signage System have
been categorized into five groups.
“A” Sign Types represent Platform Signs.
“B” Sign Types represent Interior Signs.
“C” Sign Types represent Exterior Signs.
“D” Sign Types represent Regulatory Signs.
“E” Sign Types represent Electronic Signs.
This chapter includes a comprehensive review of all
static Platform Signage (A Sign Types) within the
Amtrak Graphic Signage System. For electronic signs
found on platforms, refer to Chapter 8.0 Electronic
Signage.
A sign overview, elevations of typical mounting
options, sign size and layout and a design intent
drawing is included for each Sign Type. “A” refers
to signs found on station platforms. Numeric codes
(1, 2, 3, etc.), following the location prefix “A” help
organize and codify all Sign Types within this category.
Sign Types are listed first by their name and are fol-
lowed by their identifying letter and number. For
example: City Identifier, A1 Sign Type.

ADA City Identifier
A12 Sign Type
Sign Overview
These signs are used at
a central location on the
platform to identify the
SAN DIEGO, CA
city and state name of a
TBO!EJFHP-!DB!
station stop to the visu-
ally impaired.
Raised Character mes-
sages must be written
in capital letters, raised
1/32” and be accompa-
nied by a Grade 2 Braille
message equivalent
directly below the Raised
A12 Sign Type
Characters.
The ADA counterpart
to the A1 and A2 City
Identifiers, A12 signs dis-
play the city name and
two letter state designa-
tion of a station stop;
they do not display the
word “Station”.
A12 signs, which are
located at platforms,
are often confused with
C20 signs, which display
the city name only with
the word “Station” and
are located at curbside
station entrances. At
Amtrak stops with only a
platform and no station
building, the A12 sign is
to be used, not the C20.

“B” Sign Types
Interior Signs
Signs for the Amtrak Graphics Signage System have
been categorized into five groups.
“A” Sign Types represent Platform Signs.
“B” Sign Types represent Interior Signs.
“C” Sign Types represent Exterior Signs.
“D” Sign Types represent Regulatory Signs.
“E” Sign Types represent Electronic Signs.
This chapter includes a comprehensive review of all
static Interior Signage (B Sign Types) within the
Amtrak Graphic Signage System. For electronic
signs found in station interiors, refer to Chapter 8.0
Electronic Signage.
A sign overview, elevations of typical mounting
options, sign size and layout and a design intent draw-
ing is included for each Sign Type. “B” refers to signs
found in station interiors. Numeric codes (1, 2, 3, etc.),
following the location prefix “B” help organize and
codify all Sign Types within this category. Sign Types
are listed first by their name and are followed by their
identifying letter and number. For example: Overhead
Directional, B1 Sign Type.
