MEMORY OF MOTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) -J220-, CHECKING AND 
ERASING .  

z

Read readiness code, see READINESS CODE, DISPLAYING . If DTC memory has been erased or 
Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was disconnected from battery positive, readiness code 
must be generated again, see READINESS CODE, GENERATING .  

If no sensor malfunction is detected: 

z

Remove inner plenum chamber cover, left:  

See PLENUM CHAMBER INNER COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING 

z

Connect VAG 1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. Motronic Engine Control Module 
(ECM) -J220- is not connected by this action.

Check wiring for open circuit between test box and 3 -pin connector using Electrical Wiring Diagram. 

z

terminal 1 + socket 108  

z

terminal 2 + socket 90  

z

terminal 3 + socket 82  

Wire resistance: Max. 1.5

Additionally check wires for short to one another.

If no wiring malfunction is found: 

z

Remove sensor and check sensor wheel for secure fit, damage and run -out. 

If no malfunction is detected on sensor wheel: 

z

Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-, see MOTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL 
MODULE (ECM) - J220-, REPLACING .  

Fuel injectors, checking 

Special tools, test equipment and auxiliary items 

z

VAG 1551 scan tool or VAG 1552 mobile scan tool with VAG 1551/3B cable  

z

VAG 1598/31 test box  

z

VAG 1526 A or Fluke 83 multimeter  

z

VAG 1527 voltage tester  

z

VAG 1594 adapter set  

z

Electrical Wiring Diagram  

Test conditions 

z

All fuses must be OK. Fuse holder is located behind access panel at far left end of dash. 

NOTE:

There is a larger gap on the sensor wheel. This gap is the reference mark 
and does not mean that the sensor wheel is damaged.

Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor -G28- must be OK, checking, see ENGINE SPEED (RPM) SENSOR, 
CHECKING  

z

Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 V  

z

Fuel pump relay must be OK  

Test sequence 

Checking resistance of fuel injectors 

z

Disconnect connectors from fuel injectors.
