DTC P0321/16705: ENGINE SPEED SENSOR (RPM - G28) - IMPLAUSIBLE SIGNAL

Test Requirement

Ensure all fuses are okay, battery voltage is at least 11.5 volts and fuel pump relay is okay. Ensure all electrical
accessories are off and A/C is off. Ensure engine is mechanically sound. Ensure no intake or exhaust system
leaks exist. Ensure engine coolant temperature is at least 176°F (80°C). On vehicles with M/T, gear shifter must
be in neutral with parking brake set. On vehicles with A/T, selector lever must be in park or neutral with
parking brake set.

Test Procedure

1. Disconnect grey 3-pin harness connector from Engine Speed Sensor (G28). See Fig. 30 . Using DVOM

measure resistance between terminals No. 2 and 3 of Engine Speed sensor. See Fig. 31 . Resistance
should be 730-1000 ohms. Check for short circuit between Engine Speed sensor terminals No. 1 and 2.
Check for short circuit between Engine Speed sensor terminals No. 1 and 3. If readings are okay, go to
next step. If readings are not okay, replace faulty Engine Speed sensor. Erase DTC memory. Verify
repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN
PROCEDURE
.

2. Disconnect ECM harness connector, leave ECM disconnected from test box. Connect Test Box (VAG

1598/31) to ECM harness connector. See CONNECTING VAG TEST BOX . Using DVOM, check
resistance between the following Engine Speed sensor 3-pin harness connector terminals and test box
sockets. See Fig. 32 .

z

Engine Speed sensor 3-pin harness connector terminal No. 1 and test box socket No. 108.

z

Engine Speed sensor 3-pin harness connector terminal No. 2 and test box socket No. 90.

z

Engine Speed sensor 3-pin harness connector terminal No. 3 and test box socket No. 82.

Resistance should be a maximum of 1.5 ohms for each reading. Check wiring in Engine Speed sensor 3-
pin harness connector for short circuits to one another. If resistance is okay and no short circuits are
present, go to next step. If resistance is not okay or short circuit exists, repair as necessary. Erase DTC
memory. Verify repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE
RELEARN PROCEDURE
.

3.

NOTE:

If a test ends with ECM replacement, before replacing ECM be certain that, all
wiring, power and ground supplies are okay. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in
SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL and ECM GROUND &
VOLTAGE SUPPLY .

NOTE:

Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor (G28) is a speed and reference sensor. If Engine
Speed sensor does not send a signal, engine will not start. If Engine Speed
sensor fails when engine is running, engine will stall.

NOTE:

There is a gap in sensor wheel. This gap is the reference mark.

Remove Engine Speed sensor. Ensure Engine Speed sensor wheel is secure on sensor shaft. Check
Engine Speed sensor for excessive runout and damage. Repair or replace as necessary. Erase DTC
memory. Verify repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See TEST DRIVE
RELEARN PROCEDURE
. If Engine Speed sensor harness connector circuits are okay, and Engine
Speed sensor is okay, replace ECM. See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE REMOVAL &
INSTALLATION
. Erase DTC memory. Verify repair. Test is complete. Perform ECM relearn
procedure. See TEST DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE .
