that he/she wields no artistic control. Finally, the ultimate insult is that what is written struggles to

get itself noticed against a background of dialogue, squeals, and every possible visual delight from

cartoon character Shrek's green body to actor Tom Cruise's chin. It can't be art, can it?

But think of the German composer Bach in the eighteenth century, satisfying his employers by

writing one cantata a week. Few composers can write without a commission. And for the true artist,

rules and restrictions stimulate. Film scoring can sharpen a composer's technique, encourage

experimentation. The composer Vaughan Williams was never quite the same again after his work

on the film Scott of the Antarctic caused him to branch into percussion instruments as a way of

capturing a frozen landscape.

Film music can be art then, and has been, in fits and starts. The frustrating thing is that many film

producers have limited expectations of what film music can be. Once the age of silent movies was

over and talkies arrived, music became an integral part of the projected film and anything was

possible. Music didn't have to be poured over the images like mayonnaise; it could argue with

them, puncture them with irony, or rudely interrupt. In Europe, various composers such as

Shostakovich and Hanns Eisler experimented with timbre and form, showing Hollywood (at the

time still stuck with the sounds of a late nineteenth-century symphony orchestra beavering away)

that innovative techniques were possible.

But even in Hollywood, art raised its head. All film composers look up to Bernard Herrmann, a

giant who coloured each score with a different sound and let his music snake through the images in

unconventional ways. The power of the film Vertigo lies not only in the director's images but in

Herrmann's worried woodwind and turbulent strings and the weird harp solos that dog the

characters' footsteps. His scores are usually so interwoven with their films that it's a futile task

trying to carve the music into selections for concert use. Herrmann proves that it's even possible to

write film scores in bulk without hurtling into an artistic decline.

So, what's my conclusion? Art or factory product? Both, in fact, although there's rather more of the

factory product than I would like at times.

CALLS FROM THE DEEP

Far beneath the waves, mysterious sounds and eerie echoes reverberate around the globe.

David Wolman asks what is going on down there.

The Earth’s oceans are full of noise: boats, whales, submarines and earth tremors all add to the

aquatic cacophony. The study of ocean acoustics has helped scientists to monitor whale

communication and migration, pinpoint the locations of undersea volcanoes, and measure ocean

temperature. Yet there’s still a handful of noises that continue to baffle researchers. Some last just a

few minutes, while others go on continuously for years at a time, and nobody knows for sure what

causes them.

The data is then analysed by examining its characters as it arrives at different hydrophones.

Christopher Fox, the director of the Acoustic Monitoring Project in Newport, Oregon, says most

recordings from the deep are easily identified, because the resulting soundwave patterns are as

individual as voice prints. It is possible to look at the characteristics of a soundwave and identify a

blue whale, a boat, or even an earthquake. But other noises remain unidentified. Most of these have

names that Fox came up with on a whim, such as Unsweep, Train and Bloop.

Take the strange noise called Unsweep, for example, a flat tone accompanied by rising tones. It was

heard continually between 1991 and 1994, and was at its loudest during the last 15 months of this

period. During decades of tuning in to the oceans, the US Navy had never heard this signal before.

Then, in 1996, geologists on the island of Taiti came up with the most plausible explanation so far.

Emile Okal and Jacques Talandier used seismometers, normally used to measure earthquakes, to

analyse Unsweep. They suspected the phenomenon was instead caused by a volcanic process.

Although Unsweep‘s relatively pure tone didn’t fit with the more varied sounds usually typical of

such activity, they speculated that it came from the oscillation of some kind of bubbly liquid,

perhaps sea water coming into contact with a large pool of lava. Okal and Talandier homed in on

the source using readings from eight different directions, including SOSUS data provided by Fox.

Other puzzling sounds may have more straightforward origins. Many noises can be traced to

weather and ocean currents, and Fox suspects these are also responsible for the sound known as

Train, which resembles the rushing sound of a distant train.

And even these species which have been well monitored could still be responsible for a curious

sound or two, because most research focuses on audible frequencies that ocean hydrophones pick

up.

There’s one crucial difference, however: in

1997 this sound was detected by sensors 4,800

kilometres apart. That means it must be far louder than any whale noise. It is possible that some

creature bigger than any whale is lurking in the ocean depths? Or, perhaps more likely, there is

something that is much more efficient at making sound.

A. A far more romantic possibility for the source of mystery noises is marine life. The sounds

produced by many creatures haven’t yet been catalogued, so little is known about their calls.

B. The system that picks up all these sounds was established in the 1960s when the US Navy set up

an array of underwater microphones, scattered around the globe. Known as SOSUS, short for Sound

Surveillance System, these listening stations sit on the seabed at a depth where sounds can travel.

C. Fox also believes this. His hunch is that the sound nicknamed Bloop is most likely to come from

some sort of animal, because its ‘signature’ is a rapid variation in frequency similar to that of

sounds known to be made by marine animals.

D. It was at first believed to be biological, possibly produced by fin whales. But when it was picked

up by receivers on opposite sides of the Pacific, researchers concluded that it was too loud to have

been produced by a whale. It also stayed the same over the course of many seasons, whereas whale

song should have varied as the whales migrated.

E. All this information pointed to a spot in the remote southern Pacific, roughly halfway between

New Zealand and Chile. They radioed a French research ship in the region, which headed to the

place and found that a previously identified chain of undersea mountains was in fact volcanic.

F. The suggestion of a huge ocean creature raises a vision of a giant squid. There are no confirmed

sightings of giant squid in the wild, although their bodies have been found on beaches. ‘We don’t

have a clue whether they make any noise or not,’ says Fox.

G. These aren’t meant to indicate the likely origins of the sounds, as no one knows what or who is

responsible for them. But in a few cases the real cause may soon be identified.

The method of study you will use with the distance learning is called “supported learning”.

Having decided to study towards an academic degree with distance learning, you may now

I love designer clothes and the latest fashions, and I really want a cool pair of Gucci

sunglasses. I need to save money, so here`s some advice for people like me - don`t go

shopping! Don`t go to shopping centres, and don`t use online shopping sites. They are

dangerous!

You`ll hear an interview with a singer called Nick Parker who plays in a band called Krispy

with his sister Mel.

Int: I`m talking to Nick Parker, the singer with the band called Krispy. Nick, your sister, Mel,

When did you start writing music?

Nick: I`ve been writing since I was ten. And later Mel started working with me. We didn`t

Africa. But we found good ways of mixing the styles.

Int: Your band, Krispy, has two guys and two girls in it. How was it formed?

Nick: Mel and I were playing in a concert at our college and there were two students from

music school in the audience. They came to see us after the show and asked if we`d like to form

a band with them. We weren`t sure at first because we were much younger than them. But we

agreed to try it out, and it was brilliant.

Was the band an immediate success?

Nick: Well, we spent the first year practicing and writing music. During that time we all had

studying to do. We played in local concerts, and the audiences enjoyed what we did. Then during

one holiday we recorded two songs and sent them to a music company. They offered us a

contract, but our parents said we had to finish college first.

Int:

You`ve been together a few years now and you`re one of the top bands. What`s that like?

Nick: Hard work. We travel to concerts all round the world and are never in one place for

more than a few nights. The others are like an older brother and sister to me and Mel, which is

good. They help us relax on our days off, and make sure we eat well. They`re strict about

practicing too.

Int: Have you had any disappointments?

Nick: Everything we`ve recorded has done well. Three singles have gone to number one, and

our first album has sold over a million copies. Our second album was due out this winter, but

I`ve been ill recently so we`ve started recording late, which is a pity. But for the rest,

everything`s fine.

Read the text and do the task that follows.

Culture, Logic, and Rhetoric

Logic, which is the basis of rhetoric, comes from culture; it is not universal.

Rhetoric, therefore, is not universal either but varies from culture to culture. The

rhetorical system of one language is neither better nor worse than the rhetorical

system of another language, but it is different.

English logic and English rhetoric, which are based on Anglo-European cultural

pattern, are linear

- that is, a good English paragraph begins with a general

statement of its content and then carefully develops that statement with a series of

specific illustrations. A good English paragraph may also use just the reverse

sequence: it may state a whole series of examples and then summarize those

examples in a single statement at the end of the paragraph. In either case, however,

the flow of ideas occurs in a straight line from the opening sentence to the last

sentence. Furthermore, a well-structured English paragraph is never digressive.

There is nothing that does not belong to the paragraph and nothing that does not

support the topic sentence.

A type of construction found in Arabic and Persian writing is very different.

Whereas English writers use a linear sequence, Arabic and Persian writers tend to

construct a paragraph in a parallel sequence using many coordinators such as and

and but. In English, maturity of style is often judged by the degree of

subordination rather than by the degree of coordination. Therefore, Arabic and

Persian style of writing, with their emphasis on coordination, seem awkward and

immature to an English reader.

Some Asian writers, on the other hand, use an indirect approach. In this kind of

writing, the topic is viewed from a variety of angles. The topic is never analyzed

directly; it is referred to only indirectly. Again, such development in an English

paragraph is awkward and unnecessary vague to an English reader.

Spanish rhetoric differs from English rhetoric in still another way. While the rules

of English rhetoric require that every sentence in a paragraph relate directly to the

central idea, a Spanish-speaking writer loves to fill a paragraph with interesting

digressions. Although a Spanish paragraph may begin and end on the same topic,

the writer often digresses into areas that are not directly related to the topic.

Spanish rhetoric, therefore, does not follow the English rule of paragraph unity.

In summary, a student who has mastered the grammar of English may still write

poor papers unless he/she has also mastered the rhetoric of English. Also, the

students may have difficulty reading an essay written by the rules of English

rhetoric unless he/she understands the ‘logical’ differences from those of his/her

native tongue.

You are going to read a magazine article about marathon running. Seven

sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences

Marathon running - a recipe for health?

If ever there was living proof that marathon running keeps you fit, Jenny

Wood Allen from Dundee is it. (0 - H) She was 71 and she did not even have

proper training shoes then.

At first she could only run to the end of her avenue, which is about three

quarters of a mile. She had problems getting back and had to either take a bus

Sharp says that if you are reasonably fit, you can probably run for two hours

designed for long-distance running.

if you train sensibly and prepare several months in advance, it could even

He believes the only problem you may have when running a marathon is

exhaustion or a small injury caused by falling or tripping over things. (5 -

Only 1 in 1,000 actually makes it to hospital.

Another problem may be post-race exhaustion. Surveys show most runners

are much more likely to catch colds or develop chest infections in the week

increased risk of illness.

At 87, Jenny Wood Allen would be doing the London marathon for the 13^th

time this Sunday. And she plans to go on taking part for many years to come.

Interviewer: How much do you help around the house, Patrick?

Patrick: Not that much really, but that’s because my mum doesn’t go out to work

any more, so she has more time than she used to. I don’t have a lot of free time

these days because I’m studying for my exams. I mean, my mum does most of the

housework, though I used to help more when I was younger - you know, hang out

clothes, lay the table, things like that. She’s pretty busy, but even so she usually

manages to find a bit of time to give me a hand with my studies - she used to be a

maths teacher and she knows I’m a bit nervous about the maths exam. But I think

she really does it for pleasure - she is really good at explaining things, though

sometimes I feel I’d just like to get on with things on my own.

Interviewer: Tracey. How often do you all do things together as a family?

Tracey: Oh, all the time, I mean at least once a week at weekends. You see, we

live in this really old house by the sea and we’ve been working on it all year. In

fact, we’ve just finished doing up the kitchen at the bank of the house. It’s been

great fun because we’ve all been doing it together and I’ve been learning a lot

about DIY, which is really useful. We’ve made a lot of mess, of course, which

we’ve had to clear up and now we’re decorating it, so it’s looking nicer and nicer.

We had lots of really big arguments about the colour, but in the end everyone

agreed with me, so I’m really happy because we’re doing things the way I want.

Interviewer: Vicky, do you ever do sports with other people in your family?

Vicky: Well, my dad’s a fitness fanatic, so he’s always running or cycling or doing

something energetic. I do sporty things with him now and again, more often in

summer though occasionally at other times of the year as well. He’s got a few

days’ holiday at the moment, so is probably doing something sporty right now.

He’s always asking me to go out cycling with him, but now I’ve got a boyfriend

and other things to do, so recently I’ve been spending more time with him than

with my dad.

Interviewer: Do you enjoy family celebrations, Kostas?

Kostas: Not much, to be honest. I just feel they go on too long and I’d prefer to be

out doing other things with my friends, not sitting around listening to my uncles

and aunts and that. Someone is always standing up and giving a speech or singing

a song and I’ve heard all those songs and speeches so many times that I’ve just lost

interest. But I don’t get annoyed or anything like that. I mean I just wait for things

to end and then I go out with my friends. That’s what I really like.

MY NEW HOME IN VENICE

Uncle Leo gives me a suspicious look when I call this place the „Scacchi Palace‟. It is really

a house, called Ca‟Scacchi in Venetian. Anywhere else in the world this would surely be

regarded as a palace, although it is one in need of a little care and attention.

Our house is by the side of the little San Cassian canal and a small square of the same name.

We have a door which leads onto the street and two entrances from the water. One runs

under a grand, rounded arch into the ground floor of the house, which, as is customary in the

city, is used instead of a cellar for storing things. The second is used for our commercial

activities and it is situated in another building which is three storeys high, attached to the

north side, towards the Grand Canal.

Finally, there is yet another exit: a wooden bridge, with handrails, runs from the first floor of

the house between the two river entrances straight over the canal and into the square itself.

Consequently I can wander over it in the morning and find fresh water from the well in the

centre of the square while still subbing sleep from my eyes. Or I may call a gondola from

my bedroom window, find it waiting for me by the time I get downstairs and, just one

minute later, be in the middle of the greatest waterway on earth: the Grand Canal of Venice.

The house is almost 200 years old, I am told, and built of bricks of a rich dark brown colour.

It has elegant arched windows and green-painted shutters to keep out the cruel summer heat.

I live on the third floor in the third room on the right with a view over the canal and the

square. When I lie in bed at night I can hear the chatter and songs of the passing gondoliers

and the conversations in the square nearby. I understand why Uncle runs his business here.

has a frightening manner at times.

„Books are for selling, not reading,‟ he replied immediately. But at least I had it for the

Richard Jackson and his wife spent their honeymoon going down the Zambezi river in a

canoe.

„They say this is a good test of a relationship,‟ said Tim as he handed me the paddle. I

wasn‟t sure that such a tough challenge was what was needed on a honeymoon, but it was

too late to go back.

My wife, Leigh, and I were standing with our guide, Tim Came, on the banks of the

Zambezi near the Zambia/Botswana border. This was to be the highlight of our honeymoon:

a safari downriver, ending at the point where David Livingstone first saw the Victoria Falls.

Neither of us had any canoeing experience. Tentatively we set off downstream, paddling

with more enthusiasm than expertise. Soon we heard the first distant rumblings of what

seemed like thunder.

„Is that Victoria Falls?‟ we inquired naively.

„No,‟ said Tim

dismissively. „That‟s our first rapid.‟ Easy, we thought. Wrong!

The canoe plotted a crazed path as we careered from side to side, our best efforts seeming

only to add to our plight. This was the first of many rapids, all relatively minor, all

enjoyably challenging for tourists like us.

The overnight stops would mean mooring at a deserted island in the middle of the river,

where Tim‟s willing support team would be waiting, having erected a camp and got the

water warm for our bucket showers. As the ice slowly melted in the drinks, restaurant-

quality food would appear from a cooker using hot coals. Then people would begin to relax,

and the day‟s stories would take on epic proportions.

One morning, Tim decided to count the number of hippos we saw, in an attempt to gauge

the population in this part of the river. Most of the wildlife keeps a cautious distance, and

we were assured that, safe in our canoe, any potential threats would be more scared of us

than we were of them - but we had been warned to give these river giants a wide berth.

They‟d normally stay in mid-stream, watching us with some suspicion, and greeting our

departure with a cacophony of grunts.

Tim yelled „Paddle!‟ and over the next 100 metres an Olympic runner would have struggled

to keep up with us. The hippo gave up the chase, and although Tim said he was just a

youngster showing off, our opinion was that he had honeymooners on the menu. That

would certainly be the way we told the story by the time we got home.

At some times of the year, you can even enjoy a natural jacuzzi in one of the rock pools

beside the falls. No permanent structures are allowed on the island - everything has to be

removed when you leave. The travel brochures say it‟s the world‟s most exclusive picnic

spot. It‟s certainly the ideal place to wind down after a near miss with a hippo.

A. Luckily we could make our mistakes in privacy as, apart from Tim and another

couple, for two days we were alone. Our only other company was the array of bird

and animal life. The paddling was fairly gentle and when we got tired, Tim would

lead us to the shore and open a cool-box containing a picnic lunch.

B. If that was the scariest moment, the most romantic was undoubtedly our final night‟s

campsite. Livingstone Island is perched literally on top of Victoria Falls. The safari

company we were with have exclusive access to it: it‟s just you, a sheer drop of a

few hundred metres and the continual roar as millions of litres of water pour over the

edge.

C. There was plenty of passing traffic to observe on land as well - giraffes, hippos,

elephants and warthogs, while eagles soared overhead. We even spotted two

rare white rhinos - sadly shorn of their horns in an attempt to stop poaching. We

paddled closer to get a better look.

D. We had a 4-metre aluminium canoe to ourselves. It was a small craft for such a

mighty river, but quite big enough to house the odd domestic dispute. Couples had, it

seemed, ended similar trips arguing rather than paddling. But it wasn‟t just newly-

weds at risk. Tim assured us that a group of comedians from North America had

failed to see the funny side too.

E. But number 150 had other ideas. As we hugged the bank he dropped under the

water. We expected him to re-surface in the same spot, as the others had done.

Instead, there was a sudden roar and he emerged lunging towards the canoe.

F. Over the next hour or so the noise grew to terrifying dimensions. By the time we

edged around the bend to confront it, we were convinced we would be faced with

mountains of white water. Instead, despite all the sound and fury, the Zambezi

seemed only slightly ruffled by a line of small rocks.

G. When we‟d all heard enough, we slept under canvas, right next to the river bank.

Fortunately, we picked a time of year largely free of mosquitoes, so our nets and

various lotions remained unused. The sounds of unseen animals were our nightly

lullaby.

The sound of music

Geoff Brown wonders whether film music can ever be regarded as art.

No one can claim such mastery of the fantasy blockbuster sound as British film music

composer John Williams. It's a style of music he did much to define in Star Wars and then

for many other films for the director Steven Spielberg. There are distinctive melodies which

give the feeling of flying, snatches of music to represent different characters, and intricate

illustrative details. In addition, everything follows the symphonic style of a hundred years

ago. It's what the film industry in Hollywood wants, it's what John Williams supplies, and

what audiences everywhere expect.

Can we call it art, or is it simply an interesting artefact, a sort of factory product? For the

cinema-goer sitting with a popcorn bag the question doesn't arise. But since film music now

spreads to a different audience far outside cinemas, on lavishly promoted soundtrack CDs

and serious concert platforms, it may be interesting to answer the question.

Composers themselves have expressed very diverse opinions. Interviewed some years ago,

Williams himself proudly referred to film music as 'the opera of the 20th century'. On the

other hand, Richard Rodney Bennett, the composer of the music for the film Murder on the

Orient Express, declared that 'in writing film music one is really using only a sixth of one's

musical mind'. Everyone agrees on one point though: the rewards are pleasingly high. There

are royalties. And if you hit the right buttons you can spin off into the lucrative sideline of a

concert career, regularly mounting live performances of film compositions.

But if you consider the working conditions that composers put up with, superficially the

odds do seem stacked against film music being classed as art. First of all, film music is

composed in snippets, timed to the second, and written after the film is shot. Then there are

insane deadlines

- like having five days to compose 50 minutes of music. Next, the

composer has to live with the fact that he/she wields no artistic control. Finally, the ultimate

insult is that what is written struggles to get itself noticed against a background of dialogue,

squeals, and every possible visual delight from cartoon character Shrek's green body to actor

Tom Cruise's chin. It can't be art, can it?

But think of the German composer Bach in the eighteenth century, satisfying his employers

by writing one cantata a week. Few composers can write without a commission. And for the

true artist, rules and restrictions stimulate. Film scoring can sharpen a composer's technique,

encourage experimentation. The composer Vaughan Williams was never quite the same

again after his work on the film Scott of the Antarctic caused him to branch into percussion

instruments as a way of capturing a frozen landscape.

Film music can be art then, and has been, in fits and starts. The frustrating thing is that many

film producers have limited expectations of what film music can be. Once the age of silent

movies was over and talkies arrived, music became an integral part of the projected film and

anything was possible. Music didn't have to be poured over the images like mayonnaise; it

could argue with them, puncture them with irony, or rudely interrupt. In Europe, various

composers such as Shostakovich and Hanns Eisler experimented with timbre and form,

showing Hollywood (at the time still stuck with the sounds of a late nineteenth-century

symphony orchestra beavering away) that innovative techniques were possible.

But even in Hollywood, art raised its head. All film composers look up to Bernard

Herrmann, a giant who coloured each score with a different sound and let his music snake

through the images in unconventional ways. The power of the film Vertigo lies not only in

the director's images but in Herrmann's worried woodwind and turbulent strings and the

weird harp solos that dog the characters' footsteps. His scores are usually so interwoven with

their films that it's a futile task trying to carve the music into selections for concert use.

Herrmann proves that it's even possible to write film scores in bulk without hurtling into an

artistic decline.

So, what's my conclusion? Art or factory product? Both in fact, although there's rather more

of the factory product than I would like at times.

Listening Script

If you met me in the street today, I think you’d find me a relaxed kind of guy, at ease with myself - you might

not even believe I run a chain of macrobiotic restaurants. But fifteen years ago… well, I was a highly stressed

accountant in Australia - a real high flyer - and over the years, I began to hate the routine of my job … crazy

deadlines to meet. I even got tired of the lifestyle: expense account lunches, a smart apartment.

It all changed one day when I got talking to a friend of mine, an architect who studies the homes of indigenous

peoples, and found some interesting ideas about the relationship between people and their environment. They

believe a building should put as little pressure on the earth as possible - that’s why in my house, only stilt-like

supports make contrast with the ground.

Anyway, this friend really inspired me… so I bought some woodland on a hill above Sydney and cleared most

of the site myself. But it took fifteen men to cut down twelve huge trees on the site, and it was important for me

that they felt what they were doing was meaningful too. I wanted the place to be filled with positive energy right

from the beginning. So I used the trunks of those trees to build the supports for the house.

It’s still quite an adventure to get to my house. First there’s a very steep driveway. You get out of the car by a

small hut where I generate my own electricity. Stacked outside you’ll find the surf-boards I make use of in my

free time! This is Australia after all. Then there are rocks and walkways across the stream to reach the house.

It’s small and simple… but it’s just right, on three floors. It’s made mainly of wood - originally light-brown

coloured ash and pink-coloured gum wood - but with time, both have gradually mellowed to the same warm

golden brown. It’s so easy to maintain inside - I just wash the whole place down from time to time with a hose!

Let me describe the top floor to give you some idea of what it’s like. Three of the walls consist of large, sliding

glass windows, which can be pushed back so you’re right in tree-tops. The fourth wall is made up of sliding

wooden panels that conceal a small cabin bedroom and bathroom. The main room is very simply furnished with

a low wooden bed, a hammock and a chair made of driftwood and rope. Nothing extra.

Most people spend their lives half asleep - I know I used to - weighed down with rich food and never getting

enough exercise, but now I get something positive out of every day. I’m not waiting months to have a holiday

and a change of scene because I love where I live. I’m in touch with the elements and everything that is going

on around me. Building the house was a bit like a personal journey and now I’ve arrived at a place where I feel

calm and comfortable.
