Review of the CopyPro

I am quite pleased with this machine, and I think it offers tremendous value. One

of the things I particularly liked about the CopyPro is that it prints at a normal speed

with decent quality, which is unusual for printers in this price category. It has five

levels of quality, although the draft mode is not recommended—pages are very light

and dotty.

CopyPro claims its ink is both water resistant and smudge-proof. I tested these

claims by putting some color pages under running water; the ink did not run, and when

the pages dried, the ink did not come off, even with rough handling, which supports

CopyPro’s claims. This is important for business users who make mailing labels and

are concerned about exposure to the weather, and for home users worried about the

durability of the photos they print.

The CopyPro comes with four separate ink cartridges, meaning users can replace

the colors as they run out. This is convenient, and it is cheaper in the long run than

using a single cartridge for all colors that has to be replaced more often.

The CopyPro has two memory card slots that can accommodate most types of

camera memory cards. I find this to be very convenient—I can plug in my camera’s

card and print, without connecting my computer. However, the CopyPro Instant Photo

Expert software was disappointing. It has minimal features and is not a replacement

for full-featured photo editing software—the software that came with my digital

camera is much better. Still, CopyPro Instant Photo Expert does let you resize your

photos, rotate them, do basic color correcting, and some other things.

In short, I think this is a good machine, and the low price makes it a good value.

A. It’s not just the history but the sheer chutzpah of these buildings that fascinates

me,” announces Trevor Newton, my guide to Liverpool, as we meet under the looming

portico of the Town Hall. An artist and architectural historian, Newton, 59, grew up

here before heading south to work in London as a topographical artist in the early

1980s. He’s returned to launch Magnificent Liverpool, idiosyncratic tours of a city

that’s captivated him since childhood.

“There’s still an outdated view of Liverpool which dates back to the Toxteth

riots and declining docks of the 1980s,” says Newton, “but the city has changed hugely

since then. The architecture is spectacular - it has the most listed buildings of any city

outside London - and the vibrant indigenous culture is open to all. You can go on tours

themed around football or the Beatles, but I wanted to offer something that draws on

my background as an architectural historian and a Liverpudlian. I’ve known this city

all my life, now I’ve come back to share it with other people.

“My father worked at the Liverpool Echo,” Newton continues, as we plunge

child.” Newton knows the city well. During the following two days my personalised

itinerary (you can book tours for groups or individuals lasting from an hour to a day or

more) takes in landmarks brought to life by Newton’s commentary: “a dusting of dates”

spiced with anecdotes.

“Everything starts with the port,” he tells me, gesturing towards the fast-flowing,

silt-brown Mersey. It was King John who declared the natural harbour a borough in

1207. Coastal, Irish and European shipping was joined in the 17th century by trade

from the American colonies. By the 1700s, warehouses and counting houses lined the

docks. Tobacco, rum and cotton - commodities of slave-powered trade - were

disgorged, while salt, soap and machinery were dispatched to the rest of the world.

E. You can see prosperity writ large in the business district. Banks and offices -

gothic, neoclassical - line the pavements like palaces. The stamp of distinguished

architects is everywhere: John Wood the Elder; Charles Cockerell; James Wyatt, who

HOW TO BE A STUDENT COOK

If you're a student you've probably already had a tough time getting into

university; and maybe you have not learned all that much about cooking yet.

Now suddenly here you are, hungry, with nothing to light the gas and a couple of

rusting pans, realising you can't live up on Pot Noodles for ever.

You don't need a lot of fancy gadgets to eat well when you're at university - a

wok and a sharp knife will do. Things are much easier than they used to be

doing.

However, cooking in a hall of residence kitchen poses unique challenges.

But why to cook at all, when there's so much ready-made food you can just pop

out and buy?

The most obvious reason is it's cheaper to cook, but there are plenty of others: it's

raining, the nearest shop's been miles away; you might want to impress someone.

You'll have to learn to do it eventually, and actually it can be fun.

There are different approaches, of course.

You can cook a great batch of stuff that will last for days - which is fine if you've

got a fridge and no mean flat mates who'll pinch your food (putting a label on it

saying "I have spat in this" doesn't work; sooner or later you'll find another label

saying "So have I too").

Some more recommend a slow cooker, but most don't think of cooking until

they're hungry.

The one invaluable object is the wok - a perfect substitute for a frying pan - in

which you can cook just about anything, not just stir-fry.

With a wok, a sharp knife and what a saucepan you can not only survive but

flourish.

Listening & Reading

В комплект материалов, необходимых для проведения и проверки

конкурса понимания устного и письменного текстов, входят:

4. Ключи и текст аудиозаписи (для членов жюри во время проверки)

Задания по аудированию и чтению состоят из трех частей (всего 40

заданий). На выполнение всех заданий отводится 1 час 15 минут, включая

время, отводимое на внесение ответов в ответные листы.

Первое задание - задание по аудированию, которое состоит двух частей.

Первая часть состоит из прослушивания устного доклада. После прослушивания

(аудиозапись звучит 2 раза) участникам предлагается выполнить 10 заданий типа

True/ False. Вторая часть состоит из прослушивания беседы. После

прослушивания (аудиозапись звучит 1 раз) участникам предлагается выполнить

5 заданий на множественный выбор (выбор из трех вариантов ответа).

Второе задание

- интегрированное задание по аудированию и чтению.

Участники читают письменный текст, прослушивают устный текст на ту же

тему, затем отвечают на 10 вопросов. Задание нацелено на проверку навыков

аудирования и просмотрового чтения. Устный текст звучит два раза. По каждому

из высказываний, следующих за текстом, участники должны ответить на вопрос,

содержится ли данная мысль в обоих источниках, только в прочитанном тексте,

только в прослушанном материале или ее нет ни в том, ни в другом источнике.

Тип заданий - смешанный: сначала участники сопоставляют высказывания с

прочитанным и услышанным текстами (поиск соответствий), затем выполняют

тест на выбор из четырех предлагаемых ответов.

Третье задание - чтение научно-популярного текста. Задание нацелено

на проверку навыков поискового чтения, т.к. требует нахождения конкретной

информации в тексте. После чтения текста участники выполняют 15 заданий

различного типа.

Сложность текстов по чтению соответствует уровню В2 - С1 по шкале

Совета Европы. Тематика текстов представляет интерес для учащихся данного

возраста. Тексты подобраны по принципу тематического разнообразия; задания

проверяют разные виды чтения, в конкурсе сочетаются задания разного типа.

В текстах может содержаться до 2-3 % незнакомых слов, незнание

которых не должно препятствовать пониманию текста и выполнению

заданий.

Правильность выполнения заданий проверяется по ключам.

Критерии оценивания: За каждый правильный ответ дается 1 балл.

Максимальное количество баллов, которое можно получить за конкурс

социокультурной компетенции

В комплект материалов, необходимых для проведения и проверки лексико-

грамматического теста, входят:

Конкурс состоит из четырех заданий. Всего 40 вопросов. На выполнение всех

заданий отводится 60 минут, в которые входит и внесение ответов в ответные листы.

Задания данного конкурса соответствуют уровню сложности C1 по шкале Совета

Европы. Учащиеся должны продемонстрировать соответствующий уровень владения

лексическими и грамматическими навыками и умение практически использовать данные

навыки не только на уровне отдельного предложения, но и в более широком контексте. В

этом конкурсе также проверяется социокультурная компетенция участников.

Первое задание - задание на трансформацию. Необходимо трансформировать

исходное предложение так, чтобы употребить данное в задании слово в данной

грамматической форме. Задание направлено на определение уровня владения

грамматическими структурами и лексической сочетаемостью.

Второе задание представляет собой задание на редактирование. Необходимо убрать

лишние слова из текста.

Третье задание - задание на множественный выбор. Проверяется знание фразовых

глаголов.

Четвертое задание - задание на соответствие, оно направлено на определение

уровня сформированности социолингвистической компетенции участников.

Конкурс письменной речи

В комплект материалов, необходимых для проведения конкурса

письменной речи, входят:

3. Задание (по 1 экземпляру на каждого участника и члена жюри)

4. Лист ответа для каждого участника (возможна выдача дополнительного листа ответа

по просьбе участника)

возможна выдача дополнительных протоколов при большом количестве

проверенных работ на одного члена жюри)

Участникам конкурса предлагается написать отчет по заданным параметрам.

Коммуникативная задача считается полностью выполненной если:

1) Написан отчет на заданную тему (с использованием данных в задании статистических

данных и слов).

2) Все аспекты содержания (5 аспектов) раскрыты полностью (см Дополнительную схему

оценивания).

3) Текст написан своими словами, текстовые совпадения с источниками менее 30%.

По сложности задания соответствуют уровню С1 по шкале Совета Европы.

Объем работы либо должен соответствовать заданному 200 - 250 слов, либо

отклоняться от заданного не более чем на 10% в сторону увеличения или

уменьшения (от 180 до 275 слов).

На выполнение задания отводится 1 час 15 минут.

Участники могут использовать черновик. По окончании конкурса письменной речи черновики

собираются, но не проверяются. Проверке подлежит только лист ответа. Внимание! В

аудитории должны быть дополнительные листы ответов, которые могут

быть выданы участникам по их просьбе (если не хватило места для ответа

на одном листе ответа)!

УКАЗАНИЯ ПО ОЦЕНИВАНИЮ

Проверка письменных работ включает следующие этапы:

фронтальная проверка одной (случайно выбранной и отксерокопированной для

всех членов жюри) работы;

обсуждение выставленных оценок с целью выработки сбалансированной модели

проверки;

индивидуальная проверка работ: каждая работа проверяется в обязательном

порядке двумя членами жюри независимо друг от друга (каждый член жюри получает

чистую копию работы без каких-либо пометок). При расхождении в 1 балл (19 и 18,

например) в итоговую ведомость заносится больший балл (19). При расхождении в 2 балла

(19 и 17) в итоговой ведомости выставляется средний балл (18).

В сложных случаях (при расхождении оценок членов жюри в 3 балла) письменная работа

перепроверяется третьим членом жюри из числа наиболее опытных экспертов.

Рекомендуется назначать третьих экспертов из числа старших экспертов ЕГЭ по английскому

языку. Оценка третьего эксперта является окончательной и заносится в итоговую ведомость

(при условии, что оценка третьего эксперта отличается от оценки предыдущих экспертов не

более, чем на три балла).

При расхождении оценок двух членов жюри в четыре и более баллов или при расхождении

оценки третьего эксперта с оценками предыдущих экспертов в четыре и более баллов работа

проверяется комиссией. Комиссия формируется председателем жюри. В комиссию должны

войти председатель жюри и все эксперты, принимавшие участие в проверке данной работы.

Решение об итоговой оценке работы принимает председатель жюри.

Примечания к Критериям оценивания и Дополнительной схеме оценивания

1. Если в выполненном задании менее 180 слов, то задание проверке не подлежит и

оценивается в 0 баллов. При превышении объема более, чем на 10% (более 275 слов),

проверяются только первые 250 слов. Заголовок (даже если есть) не учитывается при

подсчете слов.

2. Критерий «Решение коммуникативной задачиª оценивается в 0 баллов, если:

• ошибки в написании слов, которые меняют значение слова (think-thing, lose-

loose).

• ошибки в употреблении артиклей, предлогов, видовременных форм глаголов,

неличных форм глаголов, степеней сравнения прилагательных и наречий,

местоимений, ошибки в порядке слов в предложении и т.д.

(пропуск подлежащего или сказуемого).

• ошибки в словообразовании, если меняется часть речи

3) отсутствие запятой при перечислении или в сложносочиненном

предложении;

4) отсутствие запятой при вводных словах;

5) отсутствие (или ошибка в употреблении) необходимых знаков препинания

при прямой речи или цитировании.

7. Ошибки в словах-связках (to my opinion - вместо in my opinion) учитываются по

критерию «Организация текстаª.

8. Ошибки в местоимениях считаются логическими или грамматическими в зависимости

от контекста: (I like good clothes. It also should be beautiful. - грамматическая ошибка; People

use computers. I do not love him. - логическая ошибка).

9. Критерии оценивания не предполагают оценивание аспектов в 0,5 балла. Следовательно,

итоговый балл за конкурс Writing может быть только целым числом (например, 16). БАЛЛ,

ЯВЛЯЮЩИЙСЯ НЕЦЕЛЫМ ЧИСЛОМ (НАПРИМЕР, 16,5) ПРИ СОБЛЮДЕНИИ

Task 3

Read the text below, then listen to part of a lecture on the same topic. You will notice

that some ideas coincide and some differ in them. Answer questions 16-25 by

choosing A if the idea is expressed in both materials, B if it can be found only in the

reading text, C if it can be found only in the audio-recording, and D if neither of

the materials expresses the idea.

Now you have 7 minutes to read the text.

It is impossible to identify and isolate an "English" culture that is common to all

speakers of English. The cultures represented by Nigerian, Singaporean, Indian,

Scottish, Filipino or Australian Aboriginal English are all very different. So, while a

language must be linked to a culture, a language is not inextricably tied to one specific

culture. Specific cultural identities can be represented by new varieties of English.

In East and Southeast Asia English plays a major role in the region as a lingua franca

of the political elite and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. It is also used as

a lingua franca between professionals and the business community.

However, what variety of English will serve as the region's lingua franca? I suggest

that a variety, which reflects local cultural conventions and pragmatic norms, is

developing to serve this role. I further suggest that it is this regional variety that will

be taught in schools, rather than an external "native speaker" variety.

It is a regional variety of English, not an external model that needs to be promoted,

because it is a regional variety of English that people in the region will want to use.

People will be able to maintain their identity while speaking their variety of English.

The curriculum of a new variety of English should reflect the lives, cultures and values

of the learners. Speakers of this new variety will want to preserve their identity by

reflecting that identity in the local variety of English they use.

This will not only liberate generations of Asian children who have had to learn how to

ask what time the next train to Liverpool Street leaves, but will also alter the nature of

what represents an authentic text. Japan’s current English teaching goals are that

learners should become American English speakers. This is unrealistic and damaging

to the cause of ELT. Students are fearful of speaking, because they falsely consider

themselves poor speakers unless they sound like Americans. However, if students were

given a regional variety of English to learn, educated speakers of the regional variety

could provide the models. Suitably qualified and trained speakers of the regional

variety could be the teachers. External models could, of course, be introduced into the

classroom, but as examples of external models, not as the model that the learners are

expected to acquire.

Some ways to boost your self-esteem

A. How we value and perceive ourselves and our abilities is believed to be strongly

tied to influences in childhood. A recent 36_________ study following nearly 9,000

participants in the US from birth to age 27 found that family environment (covering

parenting, cognitive stimulation and physical home environment) in childhood, and

especially in the first six years of life, has a long-term impact on self-esteem. The first

your self-confidence even if you have taken big steps towards it. A sense of

Do you think you could come up with some sort of notice about the Film Club we

beyond his own land. He was sailing through uncharted waters without maps or a
