Doing the Right Thing in Britain

1. When you stop a stranger in the street to ask for directions, start by saying ‘Excuse

me…’ When you want to get past people, say ‘Excuse me…’ and they will move out

of your way. And you should say ‘Please’ when you ask for something, and say

‘Thank you’ when people give you something.

2. Look friendly. Smile when you talk to people in shops, restaurants and on public

transport, and they will probably smile back.

3. Don’t sit or stand too close to people you don’t know. British people don’t often

touch each other, and usually say ‘Sorry’ when they touch someone by mistake. And

when there are several empty seats in a public place, people usually sit away from

other people.

4. Don’t ask personal questions like ‘How old are you?’, ‘How much do you weigh?’

or ‘Are you married?’ You can talk about the weather (always exciting!), or recent

TV programmes, or football matches.

5. Make an appointment to see someone before you go to their home. It’s unusual to

call on someone when they aren’t expecting you.

6. You mustn’t talk with your mouth full of food - wait until you have finished eating

before you speak. And don’t eat food off your knife.

The Yuri Nikulin Circus has a rich history. Albert Salamonsky, a former

gymnast, opened the circus in 1880. People loved to watch the shows, and the circus

continued working even during World War II, when Karandash was the star clown.

In 1983, another famous clown headed the circus. His name was Yuri Nikulin.

Today the circus has his name, and his son, Maxim Nikulin, is the new manager.

Located in a new building on the old site, the circus is larger than the old one

and easier to get around. The performances are more spectacular, too! Our circus

performers are very talented. They often win prizes at international circus

competitions.

Last night, when we were passing by the Cathedral of … what’s its name?... Oh yes,

Christ the Saviour, we were really impressed not only by its appearance - which was

beautiful!.. There was a huge crowd of people standing around waiting and we were

lucky enough to join them when after a few minutes a concert started… The music

was divine!.. The musicians played some classical and, some, I guess, spiritual music

and the whole event was dedicated to Moscow’s jubilee.

Last time I was in Moscow, it was early in July … it was rather warm … very much

like in my country. I liked Moscow and the Muscovites and had a great time here. I

made some new friends - they’re students too, very nice guys. I promised to come in

winter, for the Christmas holidays. And here I am. But the weather is awful! I have to

wear a warm coat and I don’t like it… Last night, my Russian friends took me to the

Vorobyovy Hills. They wanted to go to Red Square at first, but I refused. I don’t

fancy crowds, you know…

When we arrived in Moscow last May, the first thing that caught my eye was the fact

that people in the street were wearing those striped ribbons, I guess they were black

and orange, yes, I am sure, they were black and orange… And these ribbons were

everywhere - fixed to peoples’ clothes, handbags, even cars! We asked each other

what they were for but nobody knew. Then, when the guide came, she explained that

it was a new tradition and told us the whole story. It’s amazing!

I must say that the day was great, the weather was great and the food was great too! It

was a real holiday! As it’s my first year at the university, I haven’t had a party like

that before. First, the rector came with a huge bowl of some hot drink and started to

give it out to the students. Hmm, I really enjoyed it … Unusual but quite good! It was

followed by pancakes and some pies… Then there was music and dances, and… we

laughed a lot…

It would be simple enough to follow him. Roger was a man of habits, and even

when his hours of work were irregular, he would still take his mid-day meal,

whenever he did take it, at Percy's. Miss Temple found an antique bookshop across

the street where, as she was obliged to purchase something for standing so long

watching through its window, she on impulse selected a complete four-volume

Illustrated Lives of Sea Martyrs. The books were detailed enough for her to spend the

time in the window, apparently examining the books, while actually watching Roger

first enter and then, after an hour, exit alone, from the heavy doors across the street.

He walked straight back to his office in the Ministry courtyard. Miss Temple

arranged for her purchase to be delivered to the Boniface, and walked back into the

street, feeling like a fool. She had re-crossed the square before she convinced herself

that she was not so much a fool as an inexperienced observer. It was pointless to

watch from outside the restaurant because only from inside could she have

discovered whether or not Roger dined alone or with others, or with which particular

others - all important information.

She had a pretty good feeling that the crime she believed he had committed had

no time connection with his working hours, which meant she was likely to learn

nothing from observing his working day. It was after work that any real information

would be gathered. Abruptly she entered a store whose windows were thick with all

shapes of luggage, hampers, oilskins, lanterns, telescopes, and a large assortment of

walking sticks. She left wearing a ladies' black travelling cloak, with a deep hood and

several well hidden pockets, opera glasses, a leather-bound notebook and an all-

weather pencil. Miss Temple then took her tea.

Between cups of tea and two cakes, she made entries in the notebook,

summarising her plan and then describing the day's work so far. That she now had a

kind of uniform and a set of tools made everything that much easier and much less

about her particular feelings, for tasks requiring clothes and supporting equipment

seemed somehow more objective, even scientific, in nature. In keeping with this, she

made a point to write her entries in a kind of code, replacing proper names and places

with synonyms or word-play that hopefully would not be understood by anyone but

herself.

Miss Temple left the tea shop at four o'clock, knowing Roger to leave usually at five,

and hired a carriage. She instructed her driver in a low, direct tone of voice, after

assuring him he would be well paid for his time, that they would be following a

gentleman, most likely in another carriage, and that she would knock on the roof of

the coach to indicate the man when he appeared. The driver nodded, but said nothing

else. She took his silence to mean that this was a usual enough thing, and felt all the

more sure of herself. When Roger appeared, some forty minutes later, she nearly

missed him, amusing herself for the moment by peering through the opera glasses

into nearby open windows, but a sudden feeling caused her to glance back at the

courtyard gates just in time to see Roger, standing in the road with an air of

confidence and purpose that took her breath away, flag down a coach of his own.

Miss Temple knocked sharply on the roof of the coach and they were off.

The thrill of the chase, complicated by the nervousness of seeing Roger, was quickly

lost when, after the first few turns, it became obvious that Roger's destination was

nowhere more interesting than his own home.

Now we begin

In 2007, Michael Perham, a fourteen-year-old boy from the south of England,

became the youngest person to sail across the Atlantic alone. Michael set off from

Gibraltar on the 5,600 kilometre voyage which took forty-seven days. It was a long

and, some may say, dangerous adventure, but Michael was determined to get there.

Michael started sailing when he was seven, and says the idea of an Atlantic

crossing had been floating around in his head for a few years. Then one day, his

father, Peter, who’s a keen sailor, decided that the time was right. Michael helped

with the design of a new 9-metre yacht which was built for them and to which

Michael gave the name the Cheeky Monkey.

They say that for a real sailor, crossing the Atlantic isn’t a big deal, but people

imagine that sharks and huge waves would be the greatest dangers. In fact, Michael’s

father sailed alongside his son in his own boat to make sure he was OK. They worked

in shifts throughout the night: an hour on, then an hour off, because one of them had

to be on watch, in case large ships came too near to them.

Are you wondering what Michael ate during his voyage? Well, he says he and

his father filled two supermarket trolleys with things like sausages, spaghetti and

stews, which could be easily heated in a pan. Everything had to be in tins, though,

because that type of food keeps fresher than stuff in packets or jars.

So what did Michael miss most? He says he sometimes missed human contact

and having a face-to-face conversation. He got used to his limited food supply but

says what he really longed for was hot toast. Knowing what teenagers are like, I’d

been expecting him to say burgers or crisps, but then Michael is no ordinary teenager!

When asked how he communicated with his father, Michael explains that it was

all done by radio, though for Michael nothing compared with the pleasure of

following his father’s progress through his binoculars. Michael also communicated

with his family at home by satellite phone. One day his father contacted Michael to

tell him a part of his own boat was broken, which really disappointed Michael

because it might mean that they would have to go slower. But, in the end, that wasn't

necessary.

I asked Michael how he entertained himself on the boat. He told me he’d taken

his guitar with him but it had stayed in its case throughout the trip. He couldn’t play

because the boat was always rolling about! He loved to read and he also had an iPod

that his sister had lent him. This he plugged into portable speakers and it was on

pretty much all the time.

Was there anything that frightened Michael? He says the weather was a bit of a

worry at times, and once he got caught in a force-nine storm, but managed to handle

the boat OK. The one event that really shook him was when a flying fish jumped into

the boat and hit him on the shoulder. But mostly things were great, like sailing

alongside dolphins and seeing the bluest skies anyone could ever imagine.

Everybody is really proud of Michael’s achievements. And a remarkable thing

about the trip is that he also raised thousands of pounds for the charity known as

'Children in Need'. His school has been very supportive - the head teacher allowed

Michael to miss school, saying that a few weeks on the ocean would be an amazing

learning experience.

It’s quite likely that Michael's next challenge will be to sail non-stop around the

world. His father would do the trip in another boat, but it would be a very different

experience because they would be in 20-metre boats which travel much faster, so

they would never really be in sight of each other. Michael says next time he’ll

remember to pack some photos, to remember friends and family if he feels lonely, but

he'll leave the guitar at home!

19 Maybe the English are not world champions any more but they invented some of

the world’s most popular sports. The modern games of football, tennis and rugby

all started in England. Then others learned to play - and beat the English at their

own game…

20 A form of football was played in China more than 2,500 years ago; the people in

Florence have played a variation of football known as calcio storico since the

sixteenth century. Three hundred years later, in 1848, two football players from

Cambridge University first wrote down the rules of football. The first organized

football club was Sheffield F.C. - it started in 1857 and is still in action today.

21 British sailors took football with them to the ports of Italy, Brazil and Argentina

where the game quickly found new fans. A number of famous clubs in Spain, Italy

and Argentina were founded by Englishmen. But while the rest of the world

developed its football skills, England didn’t even play in the first three World

Cups. When they finally entered for the first time in 1950, they lost their most

important match - to the United States!

22 Like football, the game of rugby developed in England. According to legend, the

game started when William Webb Ellis, a schoolboy at Rugby school, picked the

ball up and ran with it. Again, it wasn’t long before the game spread abroad… and

again, England started losing. New Zealand, South Africa and Australia have won

the Rugby World Cup five times between them… England has won it just once!

23 A game called jeu de paume was played in France nearly 800 years ago. It was

similar to tennis but players used their hands instead of a tennis racquet and the

ball was made of leather. It was so hard that it could cause injury, or even death!

Then in the 1870s, an English army officer developed the rules of modern lawn

tennis. The game was played with racquets, and a lighter ball, made of rubber.

Wimbledon Tennis Club held the first lawn tennis championship in 1877, and first

seven champions were all English. Then the good news ended for English tennis.

The last English tennis player to win Wimbledon was Virginia Wade in… 1977!

24 But perhaps things are changing. In 2013 and 2016 Andy Murrey, the famous

tennis player, won Wimbledon, although he always points out that he is Scottish,

not English. The 2012 Olympics took place in London. The British team won 65

medals. It was a record for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team to win 67

medals at the Brazil Olympics in 2016. So hopes for the future Olympic Games in

Japan are high!

The Best Guide

(1) It's obvious that the best way to explore a city is with a friend who is

courteous, humorous, intelligent and — this is essential — extremely well-informed.

Failing that, and if it is London you are visiting, then the next best thing may well be

Martin Priestly, former university lecturer, now a guide, who seems to bring together

most of the necessary virtues and who will probably become a friend as well.

(2) Last spring, I took a trip around London with him, along with a party of

Indian journalists. Accustomed to guides who are occasionally excellent but who

often turn out to be arrogant, repetitive and sometimes bossy, I was so struck by

Priestly's performance that I sought him out again to see, if I could, just how the trick

was done.

(3) This time the tour was for a party of foreign students, aged anything

between 20 and 60, who were here to improve their English, which was already more

than passable. As the 'tourists' gathered, Martin welcomed them with a kind of

dazzled pleasure, as if he had been waiting for them with excitement and a touch of

anxiety, now thankfully relieved. I have to say, all this seemed absolutely genuine.

(4) Then we got on the coach and we were off. Martin sat in front, not in the

low-level guide's seat, but up with the group, constantly turning round to make eye

contact, to see if they understood him. Soon we're in a place called Bloomsbury,

famous among writers in the early 20^thcentury. 'Bloomsbury is famous for brains,'

says Martin, getting into his stride. 'It's a very clever place. It's not very fashionable

but it's very clever.' Soon after, we pass the British Museum and Bedford Square, 'a

great architectural showpiece,' advises Martin. The comment prompted questions

which led to a conversation about building, the part played by wealthy people and

how big chunks of London still belonged to them — an issue which was to re-emerge

later. This was how he liked to work: themes, introduced as if spontaneously, were

laid down for subsequent discussion.

(5) Suddenly the coach stopped and it was over, two and a half hours of non-

stop performance, with information, observation and humour. Martin says

encouragingly, 'I do hope you enjoy London.'

(6) We go to a nearby café to talk. Why, I asked, had he become a guide?

'Well, I used to organise a lot of courses at the university I worked for. It was quite

stressful. But I had shown students around London and I enjoyed that. It seemed an

obvious move to make. I did the London Tourist Board's Blue Badge course — two

evenings a week for two years. That was tough, especially the exam in what is known

as "coaching". You're taught to smile but everybody had difficulty with that in the

exam, when you have other things to worry about. You have to do it backwards in the

coach, desperately casting your eyes about to see what is coming next, and you're

facing the tutors and the other trainees.

(7) 'And you have to know so much to guide well, different places, all kinds of

architecture, agriculture. What if somebody asks a question about a crop beside the

road? But some of it sticks, you know... eventually.' He also tells me he keeps himself

up to date with radio, TV and newspapers.

the work. I think, as we talk, that I am starting to understand why good guides are so

students would pick up their test booklets and blue books and proceed to a

seat. They would have exactly fifty minutes to complete the examination.

When final exam time came, the students were so indoctrinated into the

system that I only needed to announce one warning at 9:40 a.m. So, as the

final minutes ticked away, I announced, "It is 9:40. You have ten minutes

until pencils down."

At exactly 9:50 a.m., I would say, "Pencils down!" Everyone had to stop

writing immediately, put their pencils down, proceed to the front of the room

and turn out in their blue books.

Those who did not put their pencils down at exactly 9:50 a.m. and give their

blue books to me would receive an automatic F, no exceptions!

Then at 9:50 a.m., I gave my last command for that semester: "It's 9:50,

pencils down. You know the rules!"

And boom, all pencils went down, just like always. All 500 students stood -

or was it only 499? Yes, it was. Everyone was filled the aisle except for one

sneaky guy.

He was just writing and writing away. I saw him up there, but he didn't think

I could have. Once again, I said, "Pencils down everyone!"

But he kept writing and writing, trying to beat my system. How dare he!

Boy, would I get him! At 9:58 a.m., as I began to organize the stacks of

examination packets, I saw this young man running down the aisle to

surrender his exam to the table.

"Here, Mr. D'Angelo, take my blue book!" he huffed and puffed. It was an

attempt at making me to break the whole system! "I cannot accept this. You

know the rules. Pencils down at 9:50 a.m., or you get an automatic F!"

"Please, Mr. D'Angelo, take my blue book!"

"No! You know I can't do that. It's against the rules."

"Please, please, take my blue book. I'm barely passing this class. My mom

and dad are going to kill me if I will have to repeat this class. Just take it,

and no one will ever know." A tear began to stream down his cheek.

"I'm sorry. I just can't." I went back to the stacks, organizing them one by

one. The young man just turned and walked away with his shoulders

slumped.

Now with a stack of five hundred or so blue books in my arms, I watched

the freshman to walk up the stairs toward the exit. Just about at the halfway

point, he changed his mind and approached me again.

He questioned softly, "Mr. D'Angelo, do you know who I am?"

"Why no, and frankly I couldn't care less."

"Are you sure you don't know who I am?" he inquired with even greater

confidence. I started to get a little concerned. Was this the dean's son? What

had I gotten myself into?

"No, I'm sorry. I don't," I said with a little hesitation in my voice.

"Are you absolutely, 100 percent sure that you don't know who I am?"

"For the last time, no, I don't know who you are!" "Well then, good!" and he

has shoved his blue book into the middle of the stack and ran out of the

Read the text below, then listen to part of an interview on the same topic. You will

notice that some ideas coincide and some differ in them. Answer questions 16-25 by

choosing A if the idea is expressed in both materials, B if it can be found only in the

Based on research over the last 20 years, teenagers that don’t read books are less

likely to attend college, have reduced language skills, experience depression more

frequently, and have lower paying jobs. That is a lot to be alarmed about. Research also

notes that reading fiction has significant benefits to the brain including increasing

attention span, developing empathy, improving overall social cognition and enhancing

reasoning ability. Reading books benefits our teenagers in many ways.

The problem is that many teenagers are not reading books. Sure, they could be

reading more text messages, emails, Facebook updates, and Wikipedia facts, but a

significant number are not reading books - whether a printed book or one downloaded

on a tablet. A study from Scotland showed that 33 out of 100 teenagers aged 15 did not

read books. In fact, 20 out of 100 said reading was a waste of time. Surprisingly,

Scotland has one of the highest literacy rates in the world. A 2007 American study

found that 66 out of 100 thirteen-year-olds are not daily readers. For those aged

seventeen the number of non-readers doubled from 1984 to 2007.

The other problem is adults are also reading less or can’t read at all. Are children

not looking at their parents for inspiration and guidance? If adults who are illiterate

cannot influence their child’s interest in reading, and we continue to lay off school

librarians, who will be there to inspire children and teenagers to be interested in reading

books? Also, if media continues to attract the attention of adults during the day (TV,

social networking, gaming, email, texting) what time is left to show children how

enjoyable and important reading books can be?

Research is showing that there is a significant correlation between reading aloud

to children and educational advantages. Reading aloud promotes vocabulary

development, listening skills, attention span and other emergent literacy skills. More

importantly, if reading aloud is not modeled to children as a pleasurable activity how

many of these children will discover this fact themselves as teenagers?

Given the information above one can easily understand why reading books for

pleasure is declining for both adults and teenagers. There is a lot to do to reverse this

trend both at the parent and school level. As a society we have to address adult illiteracy

and increase funding to schools to promote a love for reading books. More importantly,

the competition for the teenager’s time in terms of media usage may be a reality we

cannot change. This fact then brings to light how the brain of a teenager will change as

a result. We may not be providing enough opportunities for teenagers to further develop

empathy, social cognition, attention, language, and reasoning skills.

Coral Reefs

Over the ages coral reefs have proved extraordinarily resilient, yet sadly their

health and, in some cases, their very survival is now being threatened. Sue Wells and

Nick Hanna explain.

A thriving coral reef is one of the most glorious natural phenomena on our planet.

For sheer colour and exuberance, reefs can arguably outdo any other natural habitat,

and in the huge diversity and number of plants and animals they support, they are

second only to rainforests. And yet, paradoxically, these ‘rainforests of the ocean’ are

found only in shallow tropical seas where the nutrients essential to growth are

practically non-existent.

Coral reefs have existed for 450 million years, making them probably the oldest

ecosystems on the planet. Coral animals, the remarkable little creatures that build reefs,

are responsible for creating the largest structures made by life on earth - big enough, in

some cases, to dwarf even the most ambitious edifices constructed by humankind. But

this extraordinary ability is no defence against the assaults suffered by reefs as a direct

result of human activities. Sewage and toxic chemicals are pumped over them, silt from

construction sites chokes them, soil run-off smothers them, and boat and cruise ship

anchors smash into them.

Ironically, as reefs have become even more stressed, their value to people has

been thrown into sharp focus. Since the dawn of humanity, the biological abundance

of coral reefs has provided sustenance for coastal communities in the tropics, yielding

a bountiful harvest of food as well as many other products as diverse as building

materials, medicines and jewellery.

Reefs are also invaluable as natural breakwaters, protecting the land and coastal

settlements from the violence of the ocean and providing natural harbours. They are an

essential defence against rising sea levels, and if they disappear, artificial replacements

would mean spending billions of dollars. The very existence of coral islands and many

of the sandy beaches so beloved by tourists in the tropics is heavily dependent on

healthy reefs, which are, of course, an important attraction in their own right.

Reefs have always been at risk from natural catastrophes, notably, ferocious

hurricanes. In normal circumstances, they are remarkably good at regeneration, but the

continuous onslaught from human interference is now affecting their ability to recover

from natural impacts. And although we can only speculate at present, it is possible that

humanity has unleashed the greatest threat to reefs yet, in the form of increased sea

temperatures caused by global warming.

People have always been drawn to coastlines, as coastal plains provided fertile

agricultural land, and the shallow waters above the continental shelf offered abundant

fisheries. The patterns of settlement that developed posed few problems in pre-

industrial times, but a combination of industrial development and fast-growing

populations is now putting enormous pressures on shoreline ecosystems.

All centres of population and industry nowadays, even agricultural land, produce

a range of waste products and effluents. In coastal areas, pollutants are habitually

discharged into the sea and in many cases the impact on tropical coastlines is still

largely unknown. Studies that have so far been carried out have often produced

conflicting results, which can make it difficult to use the data to convince people that

potentially harmful practices should be changed. The seriousness of the effect of a

pollution incident depends on many variables, such as weather, and not just on, say,

the size of a toxic discharge. For example, in open water and on well-flushed coastlines,

pollutants are dispersed far more easily than in enclosed bays and lagoons.

The world community is now well aware of the plight of the rainforests and the

threats posed by deforestation and global warming, but the dangers that face marine

ecosystems are not so well known. Over the last decade, though, enormous advances

have been made in our understanding of the problems facing reefs and in seeking

solutions to safeguard their future.

The highest priority in reef management is to remove or at least minimise human

causes of reef destruction, and to improve conditions so that natural regeneration of the

reefs takes place as quickly as possible. It is most unlikely that a reef could be restored

to its original state in anything other than a timescale of decades, but it may be possible

for it to be helped towards a stage where normal processes can start to function.

Large-scale replanting of corals has proved difficult to carry out successfully,

largely because of the amount of diving labour required. When a reef is damaged by a

hurricane, much of the regrowth takes place by regeneration of the broken coral

fragments, but large numbers also die. Similarly, when a reef is being replanted

manually, numerous fragments of coral have to be planted if a significant number are

to flourish.

Active reef restoration is perhaps most useful and cost-effective where there is a

need to increase populations of very rare coral species, or to repair reefs in marine

parks or in locations where a great deal of money is earned from tourism.

One principle increasingly being recognised in the battle to protect the world’s

natural resources, is that whoever is engaged in activities that could harm the

environment, pays the cost. This is the case whether it involves installing equipment or

technology to prevent pollution and other degradation, or to repair any damage that

Reefs used for tourism are most obviously of high economic worth, but it may

be harder to calculate the worth of reefs used primarily for fishing (particularly

subsistence fishing), unless detailed catch statistics are available, which are often not.

It is perhaps even harder to put prices based on the scientific or aesthetic value of the

reefs - some remote and pristine reefs might be considered especially valuable now for

their rarity value.

Clearly this process is complex and the results at present are variable and highly

dependent on the site in question, and the amount of information available. But it can

provide an indicator of the conservation value of the reef and underlines the importance

of preventing damaging activities.

CHILDHOOD MEMORIES OF PARIS

When I try to remember the glorious, the marvellous, the lost and luminous

city of Paris, I find it hard to separate from the city that exists in the mind

from the actual city whose streets I once trod.

In Paris my mother first took me to the opera, a matinee of La Boheme - a

Parisian tale.

And there in Act One, behind the garret window, and again, in Act Four, was

a painted vista of Paris rooftops just like any you could see through and

perhaps still can around the old quarters of the city.

It had never struck me before that reality and romance could so poignantly

collude with each other; so that ever afterwards I saw Paris as a palpable

network of ‘scenes', down to the subtle lighting of a smoky-blue winter’s

morning; the incarnation of something already imagined.

My mother must have been moved by the same ambiguous, uncanny reality

as me, because I can never recall her, only days after our arrival, saying in a

rapturous, if half startled, voice,

'Look darling, this is Paris, darling,' (I knew it was Paris, we were in Paris,

we were strolling down the Champs Elysees), 'isn't it divine?'

And that word, through the refining filter of Paris, is all I need to conjure up

my mother: as she licked from her lips the residue of some oozing cream

cake; as if she held up to herself, like some flimsy, snatched-up dancing

partner, a newly bought frock: 'Isn't it just divine!'

I cannot summon my father so easily. Perhaps because he was always a

distant and sombre figure, outshone, first to his much delight, then to his

consternation, by my mother's heedless brightness.

Yet I remember him once attempting to draw out near or so I think was his

intention. He was standing by the fire, waiting for my mother before they left

for another of his official functions.

‘The thing is’, he suddenly said, slowly, with an air of weighed wisdom and

of speaking aloud some uncontainable thought, ‘when you are out on an

adventure, you want to be at home by the fire, and when you are at home by

the fire, you want to be out on an adventure’.

He seemed have taken aback, himself, at his own words, as if he had not

known they were stored inside him.

He looked self-consciously at his watch: 'Whatever can your mother be up

to?'

Perhaps it was on that same evening that I asked him, point-blank, what we

were about doing, and what he was doing, here in Paris. And he replied, with
