There are five gaps in the text below. Read it and decide which sentence A-E best fits
each gap 1-5 in the text.
A. I spent two years in the pirate captain’s house.
B. I still wanted to be a sailor.
C. There I met a boy whom I knew.
D. At first everything went well.
E. Our ship struggled with the waves for a long time.
Robinson Crusoe
My name is Robinson Crusoe and I was born in the city of York. I always
wanted to go to sea. One day, when I was eighteen years old, I went to Hull.
(1)______ The boy’s father was the captain of a ship. That boy said to me, ‘Rob, do
you want to sail on our ship? We start to London today.’
I was very glad, of course, and agreed at once.
In the open sea we were caught in a terrible storm. (2)_______ Finally it went
to the bottom and we were all thrown into the sea. A ship which was passing by sent
a boat and saved us. In the morning we reached the shore.
I was very young then and soon forgot the terrible storm. (3)______ I went to
London. There I met the captain of a ship that was going to Africa. The captain was a
very nice gentleman. We liked each other and soon became friends. The captain
invited me to sail to Africa with him. Of course, I agreed with pleasure.
The voyage to Africa was successful. But when we came back to England, the
captain died, and I had to go on my second voyage to Africa without my friend.
(4)______ The weather was fine and the sea was calm. But not far from the
shores of Africa we met a ship with a black flag. It was a pirate ship, and the pirates
attacked us. Our sailors fought bravely, but the pirates were stronger. Some of our
men were killed, and the others were taken prisoner. When the pirate ship came to the
port, the captain took me to his house and made me his slave.
(5)______ I had to work in the house and in the yard with the other slaves. It
was quite impossible to run away.

(1) When Anne Bechar set out to find the 80 or so women - myself included - who
were at Leeds Girls’ High School with her until 1979, it was, she admits, because she
had lots of good news she wanted to tell them. ‘I wasn’t very academic at school, and
I felt I was a nobody,’ she says. “Now I have lived for years in Paris and eight years
in the Middle East, I have a family and I run a successful business. I feel that I am
somebody.”
(2) Anne’s detective work resulted in the tracking-down of all but a dozen of our ex-
classmates. Then we received our invitations and
44 of us, astonished by the
realization that we had been old girls for 20 years, agreed to show up for a lunch.
Another 20 sent news, good wishes and apologies.
(3) So, once we’d had our hair done - and wondering whether we would recognize
each other - we assembled in a dining hall that made us think of cabbage and sponge
pudding. By the end of lunch it could have been 20 years ago; it was like a bad
episode of soap opera in which everything that had happened since was a dream.
(4) It was not simply that in our own eyes we were unchanged. It was that we had
gone back to the roles of two decades ago. Bryony, our head girl, who is now a

doctor, asked kind questions with exactly the grace towards younger girls that made
her popular then. Anne was told off by her friend Ruth for talking down to her,
exactly as she had done at school. I showed off. We had become 14-year-olds in 37-
year-old bodies.
(5) The school authorities, who had arranged a tour of new buildings for us, found us
uncooperative. We didn’t want to see the new language labs and the new music
block. We all wanted to see desks we sat at, we all walked along the corridors we had
regularly raced down and talked in, and remembered. We wanted to meet the ghosts
of our childhood selves.
(6) We were amazed, though, at the well-stocked careers room. In our day, careers
advice was a teacher who mostly suggested nursing and secretarial work. Her limited
imagination had not had much effect. Among us were doctors, lawyers, accountants,
pharmacists and laboratory technicians. Diane, who was enough of a rebel at school
to break the rules about wearing make-up, is now a beautician. Mandy is now a
school governor. And I became a journalist.

Read the passage below and answer questions 1-15.
HYPNOSIS COMES OF AGE
It looks as though hypnosis, once thought of as something to be done on stage by a
magician - and even considered until fairly recently by many doctors as medically
useless - has finally come into its own. Research into the subject of hypnosis has
revealed a great deal of interesting, sometimes exciting, and often startling
information about the uses and value of hypnotism.
Clinical hypnotists
(qualified doctors who have been specially trained in the
techniques of hypnosis - it is important to note that hypnotism is so powerful that it
can be very dangerous when used by unqualified people) are using this method to
treat a variety of medical problems, both physical and mental, and are discovering
some fascinating things along the way. For example, Dr. David M. Cheek of
Children’s Hospital in San Francisco surprised medical circles with a theory that
patients under anesthesia for surgery could remember later - under hypnosis - much
of what happened and was said during their operations.
Since then, Cheek has studied more than 800 patients to test his theory. Many of
them, he reports, were able to recall specific events and conversation by the people in
the operating room.
These findings, Cheek believes, indicate the strong possibility that distressing talk in
surgery may sometimes account for postoperative depression in a patient. It might
explain, for instance, the case of a famous professor who died recently after an
abdominal operation. What the surgeon found looked like cancer, and he said “Poor
old John” clearly as he sewed up the opening without having removed anything. The
professor died a few hours later. No cancer was found at autopsy. Understandably,
more than a dozen large hospitals throughout the country already have established a
policy of 'operating room silence' during surgery, owing to the findings of Cheek and
others. Many more, it is to be hoped, will do the same.
Hypnosis has been used as a muscle-relaxer in childbirth for 150 years, though it was
not totally accepted by the medical establishment for much of that time. Today,
however, it is used in childbirth by hundreds of hospitals all over the world. As an
anesthetic and pain reliever for patients who for some reason can’t have chemical
anesthetics, it is being used more and more. At the University of Minnesota, blood-
pressure control through hypnosis is being used in the treatment of hemophiliacs,
who might otherwise bleed to death from a small cut or bruise.

What is hypnosis, anyway? In the mid-1800s, an English physician named James
Braid was the first real authority to recognize its psychological nature. He believed
that it was a state of 'nervous sleep', but in the
1920s, machines like the
electroencephalograph (device which measures brain waves) showed that brain-wave
patterns of people under hypnosis are more like those of people awake than asleep.
There are other differences as well.
Clinical hypnotists have known for a long time that persons in the deepest state of
hypnosis always act as though wide-awake. However, there is a difference which can
be measured - a pain test. A deeply hypnotized person can take an 80-volt electrical
shock without feeling pain (anyone in a normal state will suffer at 35 volts or even
less).
If hypnosis is not induced sleep, what can it be? There are some clues. Brain-wave
patterns of subjects in hypnosis are similar to those of people under deep anesthesia
for surgery. Many clinical hypnotists believe there is a relationship, and Dr. Cheek’s
work tends to bear this out.
One of the strangest new discoveries in hypnosis research is time distortion. Almost
everyone has had busy dreams that seem to last forever. You travel to Europe,
Canada, Washington. You chat with a cousin in London, attend a bull fight, play a
whole evening of bridge. You’d swear that you dreamed for hours. If you had
clocked it, however, you might find your dreams took about 15 to 20 seconds.
Regression - sending the patient back in time to recall 'forgotten' happenings - is
being used more and more to help troubled minds.
A male patient sent to me recently was terribly bothered by an obsession that there
were record-player needles in his food. Eating was a torture. He examined every
spoonful before he could swallow it. Regressed under hypnosis, he recalled that, at
the age of four, he had swallowed a steel record-player needle in a spoonful of
mashed potato. The resulting experience - frightened parents, clanging ambulance,
stern-faced doctors - had, in a way, burned a short circuit in his unconscious mind.
This trouble spot showed up with the pressures of later life. When this was explained
to him in a waking state, the patient soon gained peace of mind and his whole
personality changed for the better. His problem took only three treatments, and he is
now enjoying his meals for the first time in years.
One of the most fascinating but dangerous uses of hypnosis is in military intelligence.
Communication in war is always a headache. Codes can be broken; a professional
spy may or may not stay loyal; your own man may have complete loyalty, but his
judgment may not always be perfect. Hypnosis, on the other hand, provides a unique
solution.
Doctors see in hypnosis a possible answer to the rejection problem which surgeons
meet when transplanting hearts and other organs. “Also,” they say, “in long-term
flights through space, auto-hypnosis could be an ideal solution to long periods of
traveling time and to tiredness. It could be used - as it is on earth in research

laboratories - to change the body functions of astronauts in order to put them in a
hibernation-like state for certain periods. In both outer space and submarine
exploration, men trained in the use of hypnosis would be able to help each other in
many ways, such as control of pain, thus avoiding heavy and often dangerous drugs.”
There is little doubt in my mind that 20 years from now people in this field will
consider the material presented here interesting but strictly ancient history. All the
present signs indicate that hypnotism, after 200 years of struggle for attention, has
come of age.
Task 1. Questions 1-7
Do the following statements agree with the information given in the text?
In boxes 1-7 on your answer sheet, circle: A (TRUE) if the statement agrees with the

Easy Writing
Have you ever heard of Lazlo Biro? He invented the ballpoint pen (the biro). His
invention has made writing a lot easier for everyone.
In the 1930s Lazlo Biro worked for a newspaper in Budapest in Hungary. While
writing his articles he used an ink pen which left a lot of ink stains on paper. He often
watched the newspaper being printed by huge printing machines. Biro noticed that
the ink used in the printing machines dried very quickly. He wondered if this quick-
drying ink could be used in pens. He had the idea of using a tube of quick-drying ink
with a ball at the end. He found that when you wrote with it, the ball allowed ink to
flow out of the tube and on to the paper. Because it dried quickly it did not smudge
like ordinary ink.
Biro was very excited by his discovery. His pen was much easier and smoother to
write with. It was especially helpful to left-handed people. With the pen, it was
possible to write up to 200,000 words before the ink ran out. It was even possible to
write on rough surfaces. Another advantage of the ballpoint pen was that it was
cheap. You just threw it away when the ink ran out and got another one!
Unfortunately, before he was able to patent* his invention, the Second World War
broke out. Biro went to Brazil. There, he and his brother George began to improve
the design of the pen. In the early 1940s they began to manufacture a new pen, but
they did not have enough money to start a big company.
In 1944 he sold his business to an Englishman named Henry Martin. Martin produced
thousands of Biro pens. He sold many to the men and women in the American and
British armies. People liked the pens very much. They were convenient and easy to
carry around and they could be used anywhere. They were cheaper than fountain
pens. Later, Martin sold the business to a French company called BIC. This company
now sells twelve million pens a day.
Biro was pleased that his pen was so popular, but he did not make a lot of money
from his invention. He died quite a poor man in South America. However, his name
is not forgotten. It has become an everyday word.
*When an inventor patents something, this prevents others from using the invention
without permission.

Task 1
Read the text below and mark the facts as True or False.
Russians call it the Mendeleev periodic table, while in other countries people drop the
name of the Russian chemist Dmitry Mendeleev - the scientist who came up with the
concept that atomic weights of elements largely predetermine their physical and
chemical properties. In the anticipation of an anniversary of this discovery (1869-
1870), we decided to find out more interesting facts from the director of the Joint
Institute of Nuclear Research, who kindly agreed to answer our questions.
Can you tell us about the history of this discovery and its importance nowadays?
It’s amazing but Mendeleev based his classification on 63 elements only, of which
just 48 had atomic weights precisely determined at that time. Others had not been
studied thoroughly. His first table was put on a sheet of paper with some gaps for
unknown elements and he corrected the atomic weights for the elements which he
thought were incorrect. All the missing elements were discovered later and all the
atomic weights he thought wrong proved to be as he predicted! Now we are working
on discovering the 119th of the Mendeleev table and there seems to be no limit. One
of the elements discovered recently is named after Mendeleev.
Were there any attempts to classify elements before and after his discovery?
Yes, just a few. The earliest was based on two large groups of acid-forming and base-
forming elements. However, this broad classification proved inadequate. The second
made a distinction between metals and non-metals. But it turned out to be
inconsistent. The German chemist Lothar Meyer put forward similar proposals
shortly after Mendeleev, but criticized Mendeleev’s predictions of incorrect atomic
weights of some elements.
Can the Mendeleev periodic table be regarded as a law of nature?
No one can deny that. It has been verified many times decades after Mendeleev’s
death in 1907. Now it’s as valuable as the work of Copernicus in astronomy or
Einstein’s theory of relativity.
Was Mendeleev nominated for a Nobel prize?
Yes, three times - in 1905, 1906, 1907. Unfortunately, he failed to get a prize due to
the long time that had passed since his discovery and the time when Nobel prizes
were first introduced in 1901.

Read a BBC article and answer questions.
Profile: Yuri Gagarin
By Paul Rincon and Katia Moskvitch
Science reporters, BBC News
On 12 April 1961, manned space travel escaped the pages of fanciful fiction and
arrived blazing into the here-and-now.
The first space flight was a triumph for the Soviet Union and a political and
diplomatic setback for the US. But Yuri Gagarin was an instant history-maker whose
achievement transcended the politics of the time.
He was born in the village of Klushino, outside Moscow; his father was a carpenter,
while his mother worked as a milkmaid. His family, like many others, had suffered at
the hands of the Nazis in World War II. During the German occupation, the Gagarins
were forced out of their home and had to live in a tiny "mud hut" nearby. Yuri's
brother Valentin and his sister Zoya were deported to labour camps in Poland.
When the future cosmonaut was just 13, he moved with his family to the city of
Gzhatsk. His father dismantled the house in Klushino, moved it to the city and rebuilt
it there. Friends and family remember a fun-loving boy, fond of pranks, but also keen
on his studies. Yelena Kozlova taught Gagarin botany while the future cosmonaut
was at school in the city. Now 91, she recalls that Yuri's favourite subjects were
maths and physics: "No-one was able to resist his smile! And girls always liked him,
too," she explained.
Gagarin initially graduated from trade school as a foundryman. But he later chose to
pursue his studies, enrolling for a technical degree at the Saratov Technical College.
While studying here, Gagarin learnt to fly with the local "aero club".
"When he was a student at the Saratov Technical College, he didn't have much
money, and to make some extra cash he had to work part-time as a dock labourer on
the Volga River - and he used the money to buy presents for his family," his niece
Tamara Filatova told BBC News.
In 1955, Yuri Gagarin entered the Orenburg Pilot School, and upon graduation joined
the Soviet Air Force as a lieutenant. It was here that he met his wife, Valentina, a
graduate of the Orenburg Medical School. Soon after the couple married, Gagarin
began a tour of duty as a fighter pilot.
In 1960, Gagarin - along with 19 others - was selected as a candidate for the Soviet
space programme. "Gagarin was a very clever young man. He was head and
shoulders above all the other cosmonauts," says Reg Turnill, the BBC's aerospace

correspondent from 1958-1975. "He was so quick to learn and had such an easy
personality that he was very popular among the top brass, because he could be relied
on to play ball and not to give away any secrets."
The pool of 19 was eventually whittled down to two: Gagarin and fellow test pilot
Gherman Titov. Some have suggested that Gagarin's relatively humble background
may have given him the edge over Titov.
On the morning of 12 April 1961, the 27-year-old Gagarin blasted off atop a 30m-
high rocket from the Tyuratam Missile Range (now Baikonur Cosmodrome).
'Here we go'
The story goes that Gagarin yelled "poyekhali" ("here we go") as his rocket blasted
off from Earth. For many, the line embodied the impatience of all those who had for
decades dreamed of exploring space. During the historic 108-minute orbital flight,
Gagarin was able to consume food through squeeze tubes and kept mission control
updated on his condition using a high-frequency radio and a telegraph key.
The mission came perilously close to disaster. During re-entry, cables linking the
spacecraft's descent module to the service module failed to separate. This caused
violent shaking during the fiery re-entry through the Earth's atmosphere.
Gagarin baled out before his capsule hit the ground and parachuted to a safe landing
near the Volga River. He was subsequently bestowed the title of Hero of the Soviet
Union by the USSR's leader Nikita Khrushchev. Overnight, Gagarin achieved
international renown. He toured the world in style, signed autographs, rubbed
shoulders with world leaders and once happened to kiss the Italian film star Gina
Lollobrigida.
Final flight
On 28 March 1968, Gagarin was killed on a routine training flight. He was 34 years
old. His MiG-15UTI went into a dive and crashed into forest near the town of
Kirzach, north-east of Moscow. Gagarin's co-pilot Vladimir Seregin was also killed.
The cause of the crash is unknown, and many conspiracy theories have grown up in
the intervening years. Among the more credible theories is that proposed by fellow
cosmonaut Alexey Leonov, who believes that a Sukhoi jet
- flying below its
minimum altitude
- passed within metres of Gagarin's plane. This triggered
turbulence which sent the MiG into a spin from which it did not recover.
Alternatively, a cabin air vent may have been left open by the crew or a previous pilot
and this may have led to oxygen deprivation and an inability to control the aircraft.
Whatever the cause of the crash, since Gagarin's epochal flight in 1961, more than
500 people have flown in space. They all follow in the footsteps of the slight young
man from Klushino who took a leap into the unknown some 60 years ago.
For questions 1-8, сhoose option TRUE if the statement agrees with the information
given in the text; FALSE if the statement contradicts the information given in the text
or if there is no information given in the text.

Travelling on an Overland Truck across Africa
The key thing to remember when travelling overland in Africa is to expect the unexpected! If you’re someone who
requires a Sxed itinerary with no surprises, then this won’t be the kind of trip for you. We sometimes have to change
our travel plans due to unforeseen circumstances. But this is what makes every trip different and exciting. As part
of this adventure, we expect you to play an active role in the daily running of your trip, to get stuck in and work as a
team, helping out with tasks like cooking meals over open Sres, pitching tents and cleaning and tidying the truck.
On driving days, we travel 100-600 km, depending on the terrain. We aim for one long driving day followed by
several short ones. We have some non-driving days, when you can relax and enjoy sights like Lake Malawi or
Victoria Falls. Most nights are spent at campsites, where you can shower, have a cold drink etc., but we sometimes
camp in the bush, experiencing the “real” Africa. We provide generous sized tents (shared with one other) and thick
camping mats, which by all accounts are comfortable (all you need is a sleeping bag and a mosquito net).
Your day begins at 7am with a simple ‘help yourself’ breakfast. For other meals, you’ll be expected to muck in and
do your bit. When ‘on the road’ or at campsites, you will use a rota system and cook in groups with 2-3 others using
gas or open Sres. Expect to cook once every 7-10 days, depending on the size of the group. Occasionally there will
be some stores of food on the truck for you to use, but it’s your job to decide what to cook and shop for most of
your ingredients in local markets and shops. We do NOT cater for fussy eaters, or carry special food items. So be
warned!
If you’re not cooking, the early part of the evening will be spent putting up your tent with your ‘tent buddy’. Most
crucially, you’ll collect Srewood before lightening the Sre and making hot drinks. Water is collected from the local

Water is collected from the local
wells where available. Then you can chill out and enjoy the evening. We have lights in the truck so you can read or

Pavlova - an Iconic Dessert with a Contested History
(1) Australia and New Zealand have always acted like siblings, and they love to squabble over sports, the
nationality of Russell Crowe, and food, but there is no controversy bigger than this. The rivalry and dispute over the
origins of the Pavlova, or “Pav,” as both sides affectionately call it. Indeed, this airy dessert made of a meringue
shell that is topped with cream and fresh fruit has been the countries’ longest-running dispute.
(2) The one aspect of this dispute that both countries can agree on is the origin of this favoured dessert’s name.
The Pav is named after the famed Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova, who toured Australia and New Zealand in 1926.
(3) As the New Zealand story goes, the chef of the Wellington hotel at the time created the billowy dessert in her
honor, claiming inspiration from her tutu. The Australian tale is similar, but instead involves a chef at the Esplanade
hotel in Perth who named the dessert after the ballerina when one diner declared it to be “light as Pavlova”.
However, in reality, the authorship belongs to neither of them.
(4) New Zealander Dr. Andrew Paul Wood and Australian Annabelle Utrecht spent two years researching the true
origin of the Pavlova, searching through newspapers and cookbooks throughout the years. "Meringue cakes were
just about everywhere, prior to the Pavlova," explains Ms. Utrecht. In their investigation, they found over 150 recipes
for meringue-based cakes that all look similar to the Pavlova we know today, all published before Anna Pavlova
even arrived Down Under in 1926!
(5) The Trst Pavlova-like recipe found in their investigation was a meringue, cream and fruit torte named Spanische
Windtorte, which was very popular in 18th century Germany. The general recipe later travelled to America with
German immigrants that settled in the Midwest. Once it landed on American shores, it was developed further. In
the late 1800s, the hand-cranked egg beater was invented. This resulted in many American housewives creating
meringue more often. Resulting in the meringue craze, meringue recipes became wide-spread due to the ease in
creation, and Pavlovas, as we know them today, became a home-cooked favourite.
(6) The researchers believe that it’s possible the recipe travelled to New Zealand and Australia on the back of a
cornstarch box. Manufacturers importing cornstarch from America might have printed the recipe on the back of
the box. The use of cornstarch thus became the deTning feature of the Pavlova recipe.
(7) Pavlova is made by beating egg whites to a very stiff consistency before folding in caster sugar, white vinegar,
cornstarch, and sometimes vanilla, and slow-baking the mixture similarly to meringue. This makes the outside of
the Pavlova a crisp crunchy shell, while the interior remains soft and moist with more of a marshmallow texture.
(8) Despite neither Australia nor New Zealand actually creating the Pavlova, both countries have become the lucky
ones who are the guardians of this well-loved dessert. Unlike many other dishes named after Anna that did not
make it past the era where the biggest star in the world was a ballerina, the Aussie and Kiwi Pavlova dishes
continue to live on almost 100 years later.

MOVING TO THE WEST
0
To Americans ‘the West’ was an ever-changing concept.
At the time of the Drst federal census in 1790, 95 per cent of America’s four of million people lived hard by
00
the eastern seaboard and ‘the West’ was virtually everything else.
1. By the 1820s, it extended not much beyond the Appalachians. The move to the West as we now know it
began in earnest in the mid-1840s when the expression Oregon fever erupted.
2. Encouraged by the government to settle the north-western territory claimed also by Britain, thousands of
homesteaders were set off for a new life at the end of the Oregon Trail.
3. The peopling of the West became not just an opportunity to be seized, but a kind of mission.
4. The Oregon Trail is a somewhat misleading term. For one thing, it wasn’t a trail in the sense of a well-
deTned track. It was a corridor, highly likely variable in width, across the grassy plains.
5. Moreover, after the Trst few years relatively a few of those who travelled the trail were heading for Oregon.
6. One of the great myths of the westward migration, compounded by a thousand movies, was that the
immigrants lumbered over the prairies in Conestoga wagons. These sturdy vehicles were uselessly heavy for
the long pull to Oregon or California.
7. They did not haul some freight west, but almost never did they transport families. Instead westward
immigrants used lighter, smaller and much nimbler wagons universally known as prairie schooners.
8. These were hauled not by horses, but by mules or oxen, which could withstand the hardships of prairie
crossings far better than any horse could.
9. A Tnal myth engendered by Hollywood was that wagons gathered in a circle whenever under attack by
Indians. They didn’t, and for the simple reason that the process would have been so laborious to organize
that the party would very probably have been slaughtered before the job was even a one quarter
accomplished.
10. Wagons were covered with a canvas, as in the movies, though that word was seldom used.
11. The material was more generally known in the nineteenth century as twill. Though wagon train was also
used (it is Trst recorded in 1849), the term wasn’t particularly apt.
12. For much of the journey the wagons fanned out into an advancing line up to ten miles wide to avoid each
other’s dust — and providing yet another obstacle to their forming into circles.
13. Many of the early homesteaders had only the faintest idea of what they were being letting themselves in for,
and often through no fault of their own. Until well into the third decade of the nineteenth century ignorance
of the West remained so profound!
14. Those who went west, incidentally, didn’t think of themselves as still being in America.
15. Until about the time of the Civil War, America was generally taken to signify itself the eastern states, so that
accounts of the time commonly contain statements like ‘Some people here [in Oregon] are talking about
returning to America’.

INTEGRATED LISTENING AND READING
Task 3
Read the book review below, then listen to part of an interview with the author of the
book. You will notice that some ideas coincide and some differ in them. Answer
questions 16-25 by choosing A if the idea is expressed in both materials, B if it can
be found only in the reading text, C if it can be found only in the audio-recording,
and D if neither of the materials expresses the idea.
Now you have 7 minutes to read the text.
The Princess Bride is one of those rare films that is almost universally beloved
by its audience and has ingrained itself in popular culture to the point where even shows
like Supernatural manage to get an Inigo Montoya (the main character of the film)
reference on occasion. Although it met with critical acclaim upon its release in 1987, a
confused marketing campaign ensured that it didn’t find its audience until later on
home video. The film celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2012 and it’s as popular as
ever, which makes it a perfect time for a behind-the-scenes memoir.
In As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales From The Making Of The Princess Bride,
actor Cary Elwes, who portrays Westley in the film, takes us behind the scenes to
deliver a tale that is every bit as fun and heartwarming as The Princess Bride itself.
The book begins with the various attempts to bring William Goldman’s novel to the
screen, through the production process itself and then beyond to the film’s presence in
contemporary popular culture. Elwes tells his story with wit and enthusiasm and it’s
clear that there is a great deal of affection there for both the film and his colleagues.
If anyone was expecting an in-depth look into the film-making process, As You
Wish will disappoint slightly. There are enough details to understand the more technical
moments, but Elwes is more keen to share the experience of the making of the film
rather than the processes behind it. There are moments designed to make you laugh,
others that will tug on the heartstrings, but all of it is told with a sincerity that points to
the genuine affection for the experiences had during the making of the film.
Elwes also punctuates his narrative with anecdotes from his colleagues including
director Rob Reiner, screenwriter William Goldman and co-stars such as Robin
Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Christopher Guest and Billy Crystal. Additionally it allows
for different perspectives on certain events, particularly concerning the experiences of
the other actors in certain scenes. It makes for an all-encompassing experience, one
that takes in a variety of perspectives on the film. The overwhelming sense though is
that everyone involved still has a huge amount of love for The Princess Bride.

For a fan of the film, As You Wish is a real delight, offering insight into a beloved
family film as well as the people behind it. It’s a treat to read about stories that haven’t
previously been shared as well as re-visit ones that the cast have been talking about
before. The Princess Bride is a storytelling film about the joys of true love and Elwes
lives up to that with style.
Now listen to part of an interview with the author of the book and then do the
tasks (questions 16-25), comparing the text above and the interview. You will hear
the interview TWICE.
16 The Princess Bride is a love story.
17 The movie is based on the idea of storytelling.

How to Take the Perfect Breath
(A) Aimee Hartley, like most people, thought she knew how to breathe - she had, after
all, been doing it all her life. She had also given it plenty of thought, having trained as
a yoga teacher. But then she took a lesson with a breathing coach, and, surprisingly, he

told her where she was going wrong. He pointed out she wasn’t taking the air into her
lower lungs but was, she says, an “upper chest breather”. Aimee adds: “He then taught
me this conscious breathing and I then became fascinated by how we breathe.”
(B) There has been a huge rise in interest in “breathwork” in the last few years, in the
western wellness world at least. Aimee Hartley is a coach in transformational
breathing, the method created by Judith Kravitz in the 70s. There are other methods,
including Buteyko and holotropic, as well as the ancient pranayama, or breath control
practice, in yoga. Hartley offers group and private breathwork sessions, and published
a book earlier this year, Breathe Well. Hers is just one of a number of books on
breathing this year, including Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art by the journalist
James Nestor and Exhale by Richie Bostock, an Instagram-friendly coach who
describes breathwork as “the next revolution in health and wellness”.
(C)These mostly contain exercises that promise to help us become better breathers,
which, it is claimed by practitioners, can transform our physical and mental health by
improving immune function, sleep, digestion and respiratory conditions, and reducing
blood pressure and anxiety. However, there is little high-quality research to back up
many of these claims, although it has become widely accepted that diaphragmatic
breathing can reduce feelings of stress and anxiety - and the NHS recommends this for
stress relief. Several studies have shown that controlled breathing can reduce levels of
the stress hormone cortisol in saliva, and another study shows that controlled breathing
can alter the chemistry in the brain, affecting levels of another stress hormone,
noradrenaline, which could enhance focus and keep brains healthier for longer.
(D) About 80% of the people Hartley sees in her sessions are “upper chest breathers,
so that when they breathe in, their between the ribs muscles and their shoulder muscles
are overused. Their chests puff out and hardly anyone is breathing really well into their
belly, which should be the foundation of the healthy breath. Proper breathing makes
your belly expand and your upper chest and back lift slightly, in a fluid motion. Watch
a toddler breathe, she says - their tummies swelling with each in-breath. Hartley
believes it is when children begin school that bad breathing habits start setting in that
last a lifetime - they are less active and start to experience emotional stresses that affect
breathing.
(E) It is hardly surprising, she says: “Modern life stops us breathing well.” Stress is
associated with small, quick breaths which, in turn, makes us feel even more frazzled.
Hartley has observed that people who live in cities, with the added problem of

pollution, take in shallower breaths. And even tight-fitting clothes can affect your
breathing, while “this mad desire to be skinny”, she says, has meant people holding
their stomachs in - she says she has seen people reluctant to take a full breath because
it gives a rounded-tummy shape. There are also postural issues that can hamper our
respiratory system, whether you are hunched over a laptop or, head down and neck
bent, looking at your phone.
(F) The first step to improving your breathing is to become aware of it, says Hartley.
You may notice you are holding your breath more than you realise, or taking shallow
breaths. “Breathing is subconscious, as it goes on 24 hours a day, and most of this we
don’t notice, but it’s the only system of the body that we have some alertness over and
have some ability to change,” says Hartley. “Find out how you breathe first - place one
hand on the lower belly, one hand on the upper chest, take a few breaths and notice
which part of the body rises more.”
(G) There are dozens of exercises in Hartley’s book, but as an easy one to try, she
recommends extending the exhalation as a way to feel more relaxed. “Breathe in
through the nose for four, hold the breath for two, and then breathe out for six, and then
repeat that for a few rounds.” You can also do it on the move, ideal on your daily walk
or commute, if you are back at work. “Breathe in for five steps while you’re walking,
and out for five steps, always in and out through the nose.”
(H) Of all the wellness trends, one benefit appears to be that breathing - for all the
coaches, books and apps out there - cannot be commercialised in quite the same way
as sleep and eating. It is free, it can be done anywhere and the effects are instant.
“Breathwork is brilliant for bringing us into the present moment,” says Hartley. “We
spend a lot of time mentally elsewhere, and the breath can never be in the past or future.
If we focus on our breath, we’re pulled back to the present moment so there’s no
overworrying or overthinking. We can just be in the here and now.”
