Connecting & Selecting Function 

VAS 5051 

Connect tester VAS 5051 to Data Link Connector (DLC) using diagnostic cable VAS 5051/1 or VAS 5051/3 
with ignition switched off. See Fig. 30 .

Switch tester on (arrow). See Fig. 29 . The tester is operationally ready when a picture (photograph) of a vehicle 
appears on the display. 

WARNING:

When performing a road test the test and measuring units must be 
secured on the rear seat. During the road test only one person must 
operate these units.

Switch ignition on. 

Touch key on screen for: Guided Fault Finding. 

Select one after another:

Confirm data as entered: 

Using "Go to" key, select "Function/component selection" 

Follow instructions on screen to start functions desired. 

V.A.G. 1551 

Switch ignition on. 

Operate brake pedal once. 

Switch on printer with Print key (indicator lamp in key lights up). 

Press key 1 for "Rapid data transfer" mode. 

Indicated on display:

Rapid data transfer HELP

Enter address word XX  

Press keys 0 and 2. ("02" enters address word "transmission electronics"). 

Indicated on display:

Rapid data transfer Q

NOTE:

Wait until the tester has read all the available control modules.

Control module does not answer! HELP  

By pressing "HELP" key a list of possible fault causes is printed out. 

After eliminating possible causes of faults, again enter address word 02 for "transmission electronics" and 
confirm. 

If "Control module does not answer!" again appears:  

z

Indicated on display: Control module does not answer! HELP  

z

Check control module voltage supply.  

z

Perform test step 1. See ELECTRICAL CHECK .  

z

Check wiring connections to diagnostic sockets. See appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAM article 
in ELECTICAL.  

z

Refer to DTC table. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) TABLE under DTC 65535: control 
module faulty!  

Press "right arrow" key. 

Indicated on display:  

NOTE:

Depending upon build level (program level) the control module can indicate a 
different control module identification from that shown in the example.
