ELECTRICAL TEST

Notes

z

For testing use a Fluke 83 multimeter or equivalent with auxiliary wiring from VAG 1594.

z

The specified values are valid for an ambient temperature of 0°-40° C (50°-104° F).

z

If measured values deviate from the specified values, determine the malfunction using the appropriate
wiring diagram.

z

If measured values deviate only slightly from the specified values, clean the sockets and connectors of the
testers and test leads and repeat the test. Before replacing the particular components, test wiring and
connections and, particularly if specified values are below 10 ohms, repeat resistance measurement on
component.

z

Before replacing components, check the respective wiring and connectors. Repeat resistance tests when
values are below 10 ohms.

Testing

1. Switch off ignition.

2. Slide plenum chamber center cover -1- forward out of its locking device and take off of dash panel -

arrow-. See Fig. 8 .

3. Remove screws -1- (Qty. 3). See Fig. 9 .

4. Lift left-hand plenum chamber cover -1- in the center of the instrument panel -arrow A-, this action

unclips the panel (front and rear edges are clipped). See Fig. 10 .

5. Pull cover -1- toward center of instrument panel and out of retainers in A-pillar -arrow B-. See Fig. 10 .

6. Lift right-hand plenum chamber cover -1- in the center of the instrument panel -arrow A-, this action

unclips the panel (front and rear edges are clipped). See Fig. 29

NOTE:

Ground connection points are located in the plenum chamber and below the
battery in the engine compartment. Check battery ground strap and ground
strap between battery and transmission. See ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC
COMPONENTS .

NOTE:

This tests for pin voltages on the TCM.

7. Pull cover -1- toward center of instrument panel and out of retainers in A-pillar -arrow B-. See Fig. 29 .

8. Remove securing screws from the right-hand sealing part -1- or the left-hand sealing part -2- and take

sealing part off plenum chamber upward. See Fig. 30 .

9. Release multi-pin connector, then disconnect connector from control module. See Fig. 31 .

10. Connect VAG 1598/18 test box to multi-pin connector -1- and lock in direction of arrow -2-. See Fig. 84

Using the VAG 1598/18 test box the wiring can be checked according to the wiring diagram.

11. After electrical tests:

NOTE:

In order to avoid interference with electronic components, switch to the
correct test range on the multimeter before connecting the test leads.
