"9" for address word "19" (Gateway) and enter by pressing "Q" key. Press keys "0" and "7" for "Code Control
Module" function "7" and enter by pressing "Q" key. Enter code into CAN data bus Interface (J533). For coding
options, see Fig. 9 . Codes from each individual control module are added together to create CAN data bus
interface code. For example, enter 00006 if equipped with ABS and Airbag, (ABS activated 00002 + Airbag
activated 00004 = 00006).

THROTTLE VALVE CONTROL MODULE (J338)

Throttle Valve Control Module (TVCM - J338) teaches ECM various positions of throttle valve when ignition
is on and engine is not running. Throttle positions are stored in the ECM. Throttle position is communicated to
ECM through two angle sensors: Angle sensor 1 for throttle valve drive (G187) and Angle sensor 2 for throttle
valve drive (G188). Sensors are integral parts of the TVCM (J338). Manufacturer recommends using Scan Tool
(VAG 1551/1552 or VAS 5051/5052).

Adapting Throttle Valve Control Module (J338) To ECM (J220)

TVCM (J338) adaptation must be performed when voltage supply to TVCM (J338) or ECM is lost. TVCM
(J338) adaptation occurs:

z

Automatically if ignition is switched on for 10 seconds or more, without operating accelerator pedal or
starter and ECM recognizes a need for adaptation. No notification that adaptation was successful will be
given when this happens.

z

When initiated through diagnostic function 04 - BASIC SETTING in display group 60, (VAG 1551/1552
or VAS 5051/5052). If using generic scan tool, follow scan tool manufacturer's instructions.

NOTE:

When adaptation of throttle valve control module is necessary and vehicle is
equipped with A/T, the transmission control module must also be adapted.
Perform adaptation of A/T to its Basic Setting. See A/T BASIC SETTING .

NOTE:

Engine will not start during automatic adaptation. Ignition must remain on
(engine off) for entire adaptation procedure. Ensure coolant temperature and
intake air temperature are between 41-194° F (5-90° C). ECM will abort
adaptation if; throttle valve cannot be closed completely (e.g.: dirty throttle

body, distorted throttle body or lose throttle body bolts), battery voltage is too
low, engine is started or accelerator pedal is pressed during adaptation.

NOTE:

A/T basic setting must be initiated when Engine, ECM (J220), A/T Control
Module (J217), Throttle Valve Control Module (J338), or Accelerator Pedal
Position (APP) sensor 1 (G79) and APP sensor 2 (G185) are replaced. (APP
sensor 1 (G79) and APP sensor 2 (G185) are one unit, they are not adjustable
and can not be replaced separately). It is also necessary to initiate A/T basic
setting if idle speed has been adjusted.

immobilizer system is indicated by warning light for Anti-Theft Immobilizer (K117) lighting up and going out
after approximately 3 seconds when ignition is turned on. Malfunction in immobilizer system is indicated, when
ignition is turned on and warning light flashes or lights up continuously. For immobilizer system diagnostics.
See appropriate DOOR LOCKS & ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS article under ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.

NOTE:

Manufacturer recommends using Scan Tool VAG 1551/1552 or VAS 5051/5052.
Starting with Model Year 2002 Golf and Jetta are equipped with Immobilizer
Generation III (Starting 6/2001 for Beetle). Ignition keys for Immobilizer III may
be marked "W3". For more reliable differentiation, always use the function
"check control module version". Scan Tool VAS 5051 or 5052 must be used for
Immobilizer Generation III diagnoses and coding. A correct Importer/Dealer
number must reside in VAS 5051 or VAS 5052 in order to request a PIN number
and to adapt Immobilizer Generation III.

NOTE:

Three attempts to enter secret code number is initially possible. Next three
attempts to enter secret code number is only possible after a minimum of 10
minutes (with ignition remaining on during this time and OBD program is exited
by function 06 "End Output"). Waiting period between each three attempts
doubles each time up to a maximum of 255 minutes.
