INTRODUCTION

SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM

ECM stores DTC(s) related to fuel injection, ignition and emissions systems. If a malfunction occurs, it will be
indicated by Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) in instrument cluster. DTCs can be read using scan tool
connected to Data Link Connector (DLC). See Fig. 1

NOTE:

Before starting work on vehicle read Service Precautions. See SERVICE
PRECAUTIONS .

NOTE:

To properly diagnose vehicle, vehicle manufacturer recommends use of Scan
Tool (VAG 1551/VAG 1552, VAS 5051/VAS 5052) and Test Box (VAG 1598).
Generic scan tools may not be able to perform all functions that are necessary
e.g. Readiness Code, Idle Check and Automatic Test Sequence etc. All voltage
tests should be performed with a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with a
minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless specifically stated differently in
testing procedures. Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position when performing
resistance tests.

NOTE:

Read and record DTCs before starting diagnostic work, some testing
procedures will set DTC(s).

NOTE:

When voltage supply to Engine Control Module (ECM) is interrupted, ECM
retains Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), but loses all "learned" and "basic"
values. Serious driveability problems may occur depending on vehicle mileage.
After reconnecting ECM, it is necessary to perform relearn procedure. See TEST
DRIVE RELEARN PROCEDURE .

MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT (K83) GLOW PLUG LIGHT (K29)

All models are equipped with a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL). MIL illuminates when a system failure has
been detected and DTC has been stored in Engine Control Module (ECM) memory. For location of MIL and
Glow Plug Light. See Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 .
