LED must flicker 

If the LED does not flicker: 

z

Switch off ignition.  

z

Remove inner plenum chamber cover, left:  

See PLENUM CHAMBER INNER COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING 

z

Connect VAG 1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. Motronic Engine Control Module 
(ECM) -J220- is not connected by this action.

Check wiring between the test box and 2-pin connectors for open circuit, short circuit to Ground (GND) 
or positive using Electrical Wiring Diagram: 

z

Fuel injector 1: terminal 2 + socket 96  

z

Fuel injector 2: terminal 2 + socket 89  

z

Fuel injector 3: terminal 2 + socket 97  

z

Fuel injector 4: terminal 2 + socket 88  

z

Wire resistance: Max.1.5

Additionally check wires for short to one another. 

Specification: 

If there is no malfunction in the wiring and the resistance measurement values are OK.: 

z

Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-, see MOTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL 
MODULE (ECM) - J220-, REPLACING .  

Fuel injectors, checking for leaks and quantity injected 

Special tools, test equipment and auxiliary items 

z

VAG 1348/3 Remote control  

z

VAG 1348/3-2 Adapter  

z

VAG 1602 Calibration tester

Test conditions

Check that the fuel pressure is in order, see FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR AND HOLDING 
PRESSURE, CHECKING
