Connect multimeter with auxiliary cables from VAG 1594 to measure voltage at terminals 3 + 4 
(connector to Motronic control module).

2003 Volkswagen New Beetle GLS

Start engine and measure basic voltage. 

Specification: 0.400 to 0.500 V 

z

Switch off ignition.  

If the specification is not obtained: 

z

Check oxygen sensor wiring, see CHECKING OXYGEN SENSOR WIRING, OXYGEN SENSOR 
2 . 

If the specification is obtained: 

z

Replace Oxygen Sensor after Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) -G130-, see item 8 .  

z

Check DTC Memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then Erase DTC Memory, see DTC 
MEMORY OF MOTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) -J220-, CHECKING AND 
ERASING .  

z

Read readiness code, see READINESS CODE, DISPLAYING . If DTC memory has been erased or 
Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was disconnected from battery positive, readiness code 
must be generated again, see READINESS CODE, GENERATING .  

Checking Oxygen Sensor wiring, oxygen sensor 2 

z

Remove inner plenum chamber cover, left: 

See PLENUM CHAMBER INNER COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING 

z

Connect VAG 1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. Motronic Engine Control Module 
(ECM) -J220- is not connected by this action.

Check wiring for open circuit between test box and 4 -pin connector to Motronic control module using 
Electrical Wiring Diagram.
