Pull off supply line -1- (black markings) and collect leaking fuel with a cloth.

Connect pressure gauge V.A.G 1318, as shown, with adapters 1318/9 and 1318/17. 

NOTE:

Fuse holder is behind access panel at far left end of dash.

NOTE:

To do this slide safety ring -2- into the union -1-.

Open shut-off tap on pressure gauge. Handle points in direction of flow.  

z

Reinstall fuse 28 (fuel pump) in fuse holder.  

z

Start engine and run at idling speed.  

z

Measure fuel pressure. 

z

Specification: Approx. 4.0 bar  

If the specification is not obtained: 

z

Switch off ignition.  

z

Check whether fuel pump can build up and maintain pressure. See FUEL PUMP, CHECKING .  

z

Check fuel pressure regulator. See CHECKING FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR .

If the specification is obtained: 

z

Switch off ignition.  

z

Check for leaks and holding pressure (compound system). Watch pressure drop on gauge. 

z

After 10 minutes there must be a residual pressure of at least 2.0 bar  

If the holding pressure drops below 2.0 bar: 

z

Start engine and run at idling speed.  

z

Switch ignition off after pressure has built-up. Simultaneously, close pressure gauge V.A.G 1318 cutoff 
tap. Handle is across through-flow direction (arrow).

Observe pressure drop (engine side) on gauge.

If the pressure drops again: 

z

Check line connections, O-rings on fuel manifold and injectors for leaks.  

z

Check pressure gauge for leaks.  

If the pressure does not drop: 

z

Check non-return valve of fuel pump, checking fuel pump non-return valve. See FUEL PUMP, 
CHECKING .  

z

Check fuel pressure regulator. See CHECKING FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR .  

Checking fuel pressure regulator 

Requirements 

z

Non-return valve for fuel pump OK, Checking. See FUEL PUMP, CHECKING  

z

Fuel supply line OK  

Work sequence 

z

Remove cover in front of fuse holder.  

z

Remove fuse 28 (fuel pump) from fuse holder. 

NOTE:

Place a cloth around the connections to be loosened before removing pressure 
gauge.
